Ugh. "This page is the cohort. An account puts you on it."
Note, this doesn't include options or stock benefits. That's a huge part of actual compensation for engineers at this level even if it's on a different balance sheet.
Re:PingCap TiDB Leaks on Thursday October 22, 2026 @01:02AM (#50191367)
Eh, the math implies <10% off their total bill. Unclear what LLM wrote this page up from their actual report, but it wasn't very good at math.
Re:AI companies are coming for the plumbers on Monday October 19, 2026 @12:30PM (#50154432)
The last time I saw a news article about this it was talking about how many Airbnb kitchens in SF had been wrecked by teams running field tests for robots doing dishes. Excited to hear about the damage actual plumbing jobs would cause.
Reading up on some of these systems is wild. For example THAAD munitions are wildly expensive, but also a ballistic projectile that physically knocks hypersonic missiles out of the air in flight 200km away. Ultimately $13 million seems reasonable to save a few city blocks in a major city. It just doesn't make sense to use against small arms like disposable drones.
I let them install the free ISP router a year back when they installed fiber in the neighborhood. I assumed I would swap it out the next day, but I haven't had any issues like back in the day. I love shopping for a nice router as much as the next tech nerd, but decent drop-in home networking seems to be pretty commodity now days.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:44PM (#50125780)
Isn't it weird for Tesla to start adding non-electric propulsion to their car?
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @06:43PM (#50125773)
Or this is what they're calling the v2 to re-hype it again.
We do a run of 250 similar badges for a non-tech convention every year. ~$10 per badge is about right all in. We've also done runs without ICs (just LEDs, a switch, and button cell battery) for about ~$4 some years.
Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:35AM (#50057035)
Agreed that's the best policy for the real contributors, but how do you fight back against the folks using your reviewer's good nature to test their coding agents?

Also, Linus is also comfortable closing 100 PRs as "this looks like garbage". Many communities are softer and try to be more helpful with new contributors.

Re:QGIS bans AI assisted contributions on Monday October 12, 2026 @10:19AM (#50056839)
At Plotly we are dealing with similar issues. We're doing our best to keep up, but it's genuinely hard not to just cut our losses on passer-by community contributions. 3 page issue writeups nobody has proofread, nobody but a bot to follow up with when we try, huge volume of plausible but weak PRs eating up reviewer time. All while we have core work we really want to be focused on rather than merging another bug fix we don't expect anyone but this bot has really run into.
Re:Why DuckDB 2.0 is faster on Saturday October 10, 2026 @07:29PM (#50038172)
I was ok with the AI writing until I got to the fact that they added Triggers in 2.0 and the article decided that was meh compared to optimizing workers for S3 file access on slow connections. Nope. I'll read the release notes myself.
Re:Mistral Large 4 on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @09:40AM (#49992747)
That's a big jump in the right direction for 6 months. It's certainly more on the level of the light models in terms of cost and performance, but the trajectory is awesome!
This is how most services work...

Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:02AM (#49891164)
Hanlon's Razor given that these tools are almost certainly vibe coded at this point?
Re:Sonnet 5.5 on Monday September 28, 2026 @05:19PM (#49884538)
These benchmark results keep getting more questionable without error bars.
Re:Show HN: Free alternative to graphics design giants on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:46AM (#49878867)
FYI the initial modal sounds extremely AI generated.
Re:Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents" on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @10:54PM (#49825655)
Classic case of not listening to the protests. There are tons of examples now of data centers harming communities. The issues range from overwhelming local power grids to literally poisoning the local water supply. The issue is not the data centers, it's that the government isn't enforcing basic rules already in place for these projects. Until the government or the companies demonstrate they'll protect the adjacent communities the protests will continue.
Re:OpenAI is well positioned to fast-follow Jev on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:01AM (#49802483)
I think the idea is that the latent thinking space in the LLM will be roughly the same for similar quality results - so the majority of executing well could be stripping back and fine tuning an existing LLM.
Re:Attention is all you have on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:43PM (#49789674)
Our book club has actually noted that more and more mainstream books are written for low attention span. Repeating details ad nauseum and simplifying the plot significantly. So I don't think books are immune to this automatically.
Re:Show HN: Give your AI agents access to WhatsApp on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:52AM (#49728915)
I'm much more concerned about the odds that this tool is vibe coded and will leak the conversations everywhere other than the LLM agent I've already vetted.
Re:Litelm: LiteLLM Without the Bloat on Friday September 11, 2026 @03:31PM (#49664079)
LiteLLM is basically Bifrost in the Python ecosystem.

Re:Is it all just vapourware? on Sunday August 09, 2026 @05:22PM (#49236060)
The trouble is that the loudest voices will dominate, so the little measurable wins adding up in most organizations don't get attention.
Re:Everyone is building LLM routers, we deprecated ours on Friday July 31, 2026 @04:02PM (#49127934)
I think fail-over for a production critical service is an equally important responsibility of the router.
Re:You Could Have Come Up with Kimi Delta Attention on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @01:21PM (#49087086)
Ya, probably started with asking for a buzzy title.
Ooh, this is nice. I loved windirstat back in the day.
Re:What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014) on Saturday July 04, 2026 @01:02PM (#48786931)
There are simple "ORM"s that just map classes to tables and columns to attributes. Basically focused on serialization instead of query generation. I find those to be a good balance.
