CORS doesn’t protect you from anything. Quite the opposite: it _allows_ cross origin communication (provided you follow the spec). The same origin policy is what protects you.
Sorry, can’t get past the ad at the top of the blog for that god-awful ambulance chaser that has infected the entire state of Wisconsin.

Re:GitHub Is Down on Thursday January 30, 2025 @09:38AM (#42878109)
I honestly can't believe how unreliable Github is. Outages are commonplace. It boggles my mind how nothing has been done to address the reliability regressions that have been creeping in ever since MS took over.

Caution to anyone who clicks this link: mute your speakers first, or else you'll have to deal with blaring obnoxious music via an auto-play video that isn't visible without scrolling.
That's a site-specific partial exemption from the same origin policy, as far as i can tell (without further context at the moment). Not a difference in how CORS works generally across Safari.

CORS is frustrating for a lot of developers as it can be tough to gain a complete understanding of the spec, and an understanding of the same origin policy is required. But implementation of the CORS spec(s) isn't notably different across modern browsers, now that IE is out of the picture. CORS was a real nightmare in IE. Microsoft even introduced an XHR cousin named XDR in IE10 to handle cross-origin requests, and it wasn't even a complete implementation of CORS.

This is a great resource to gain a more comprehensive understanding: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/CORS

Do you have some examples of this?

This is pretty cool. My 6 year old is into word searches and math, so this seems like it will be a fun game for him.

Sounds like you’re projecting a bit. Lots of reasons one might be up at 6, other than hype or a “meme”. For me, it’s the only time I have to work out (with a job and smaller kids).

I think I’ve seen them in Kohl’s parking lots… but that’s about it.
You’re likely being downvoted for posting an opinion piece with zero supporting evidence.
No. Simple Storage Service
That's odd. Even in incognito mode i see 2 plans and 2 prices for personal use.
It's very much comparable...for personal use: https://controld.com/plans?step=plans
I've been a NextDNS user for years now, and am trying out ControlD (last week) before I commit to switching. NextDNS development seems to have stalled and there are a number of conveniences missing, such as being able to label allowlist entries (ControlD supports this). Also, running the NextDNS app on a device that use a different profile then the one on my home router results in constant issues when the device wakes from sleep (not able to resolve domains for a noticeable amount of time on wake). NextDNS claims this is an Apple issue, but I don't think that's entirely true. Certainly not a problem for other similar services.

I'm seeing ControlD as much more feature-rich and the service is evolving faster. I also personally like the UI a bit more vs NextDNS. Prices are comparable.

Complete with cringe-worthy nickname for employees: “spooners”.
owned an apple tv for many years (many models) and i've never seen this

This is one of those things I wouldn't suggest you solve with the "roll your own" approach. There are some good libraries out there that will handle this and more. Uppy is one that comes to mind. I created and maintained another popular one for 7 years that i sunset in 2017.
Re:Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here? on Wednesday July 05, 2023 @03:38PM (#36605967)
https://raynicholus.com

Mostly focused on frontend development (dating back to 2013) with some management topics, remote work topics (such as when I worked remotely from Thailand for 3 months with most of my team remaining in-person in the US), and a number of posts that lead up to the web development book I published via Apress. A few backend and random tech-focused opinion pieces in there too.

Re:A Map of Places in the US with the Same Name on Thursday April 13, 2023 @06:14PM (#35562854)
Pleased to see this goes further than just accounting for city names that are spelled the same.

I often travel to Portland for work. First time I was asked by a number of employees "Where are you from?" Answering "Milwaukee" eventually resulted in a follow-up: "...but you flew here?" That puzzling question lead me to realize that everyone thought I was from "Milwaukie, OR", which is quite close to Portland. Pronounced the same as "Milwaukee", different spelling.

Looking at the map in this thread, indeed "Milwaukee" means Milwaukee, WI everywhere in the US except for a subsection of OR.

Sounds like a "Murder Board" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_board
I took “watch” to mean record and concluded that Amazon is going to setup a new “marketplace” that competes with the likes of pornhub. I mean, why not at this point.
I'm sure the fine print will require a minimum number of encounters per 30-day period and a minimum duration per encounter.
