Re:It pays to be grumpy and bad-tempered (2016) on Friday July 17, 2020 @02:25PM (#23873762)
In a previous job, some coworkers and my boss perceived me as being grumpy. Resting B*tch Face, more reserved, generally didn't partipate in break time video game sessions. In reality I just wanted to get my work done and go home to the family. It was one of (though not the reason) I was let go from that position. I've tried to learn from that experience, but still struggle with fitting in with those who think work is social hour and seem to get ahead by schmoozing and not head-down work. I know it's a balance, but it seems rigged for the outwardly social.

In regards to naming, why not call it "LibreOffice Community Edition" instead of "Personal"?

The Danish National Symphony Orchestra has a great rendition of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The guest conductor is Sarah Hicks, of the Minnesota Orchestra

If you look at academic definitions, yes, often they will state racism is from the majority to the minority. It is rather odd.
Honestly, right now during the pandemic, medical courier. How do you think tests get to labs?
Re:Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles on Monday June 17, 2019 @12:22PM (#20204535)
While not directly related to buttons, recently my father ran into a deer, causing moderate damage to the front right bumper of his 2017 Suburban. It cost $5000 to repair due to all the sensors and technology. It would have been $1000 or less in a 1997 Suburban.
Re:Why don't more American men take paternity leave? on Monday June 17, 2019 @11:57AM (#20204268)
Ha! Thanks for the judgement. I'm a very good dad/husband, and I never said I did nothing. I just stated i went back to work after a few days. I was always home in the evenings, weekends, mornings.
Re:Why don't more American men take paternity leave? on Monday June 17, 2019 @11:55AM (#20204245)
No complications. Wife wanted me to get out of her hair as well. I was always helpful of course. Just got back to my 9-5 after a few days at home.
Re:Why don't more American men take paternity leave? on Monday June 17, 2019 @11:54AM (#20204224)
Exactly. It wasn't like I wasn't around or did nothing. It's just from 9-5 I worked. Did chores / helped the wife out all other hours of the week. Not sure why it offended some. The traditional notion of nuclear family roles is really dying it appears.

I took a couple days off when my children are born, but as any dad/husband knows, after mom is set up at home and extended family visit and leave, there isn't much to do. I was bored after a few days so didn't mind working. Baby eats, poops, and naps. Dad gets in the way. :)
Re:Hacking My Mother’s Phone to Save Her Memories on Friday June 14, 2019 @10:26AM (#20183267)
There is a startling statistic that shows colon cancer for older people is dropping, due to routine colonoscopies recommended for those 50+, but is increasing in those that are in their 20's and 30's. It's a more aggressive type too.

All I can recommend is that if one has previously unexplained constipation, thinning stools and/or blood in the stool, get checked right away and insist on a referral for a colonoscopy. My doctor initially thought it was constipation or IBS and it was two months before a referral to gastro.

In 5-10 years I think medicine will start to recommend a colonoscopy at age 30.

We are getting to the point where there will be a generation who thinks the 20th century is old history

Thanks. Ripe old age of 36 too. I'm optimistic though.

I've been diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. While I hope to be around for awhile yet, I'm getting things ready for my wife to take over our digital life. Setting things up for easy backup and retrieval, ect. One of the things I've started is a

Word document with instructions on how to backup, what to do if the computer crashes, how to handle 1Password, what subscriptions are important ect. It'll be printed out and put in the safe.

My opinion is modern generations are woefully unprepared for how to handle our digital stuff when we pass. Whereas before we had physical photos, video cassettes, ect. that were easily handled, now everything is digital, sometimes just on phones.

I was going to say this. The B&N where I live has a large pop culture area where the CD/Music section used to be. Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR, Stranger Things dedicated sections with lots of Funko and similar products. Really clean and high quality stuff if your into collecting. I see this as the only way they can survive.
For PIN codes, would randomizing the placement of the keys on the virtual 10-key keyboard mitigate this?
Stayed in the hospital in April for about a week for a colon resection - without a doubt worst sleep is in a hospital. It was an amazing environment too and I only had 11:00pm and 4:00am checks. I think it's the nature of the environment.
Reminds me of someone going around college campuses asking whether or not we should ban Dihydrogen Oxide.
Re:Marriage Has Become a Trophy on Thursday May 16, 2019 @03:39PM (#19932291)
Call me a curmudgeonly 36 year old who was married at age 22 and still happily married, but marriage as a trophy is backwards. Marriage means going through life together, for better or worse, not as a capstone to an in-progress adult life.

But that's just my old-fashioned opinion.

I wholeheartedly agree. That and employer-based access to health insurance. Imagine if you had to change auto/life/home/rental insurance every time you changed jobs.

By law, the executive branch can't spend more money that what has been appropriated, so in theory any president has to "shut the government down"

This is all subject to interpretation, mind you.

Re:Best Buy Is Thriving in the Age of Amazon on Thursday July 19, 2018 @03:45PM (#17569640)
I recently bought a washer and dryer at Best Buy. I was thoroughly impressed with the selection and customer service. They even gave me a deal on the higher tier model after the ones I wanted were on backorder. I think they partner with Pacific Kitchen and Home to do the appliances.

Their remodels have gone a long way in getting me back there, personally. I had otherwise steered clear and was an Amazon/BH junkie.

HGTV's Fixer Upper had an episode where this treatment was used. They were fixing up an old boathouse and decided to use this method for the exterior.

Another interesting tidbit:

John Williams put the opening theme to star wars in the same key as the Fanfare (b-flat major)

The Uber Nerd in me says the purchase was to secure rights to Star Wars: ANH and the fanfare.

This will also open up the doors for a complete unedited despecialized edition of the original trilogy, not some bad laserdisc scan.

Re:My problem with the 1Password subscription model on Tuesday July 11, 2017 @04:32PM (#14747793)
I think that those that think the upgrade model will suffice are missing a few things: The increase in free/customer-as-the-product solutions that undercut existing software and by extension, the race to the bottom when it comes to app prices.

Back in the 90's, you bought a thick box with a thick manual and physical media for $25 dollars. You didn't have to worry about some App Store selling just as good software for $0.99

After the collapse of the 35W bridge, the new bridge the took its place was built ahead of schedule and on budget. As with many things in history, disaster seems to hone our ability to overcome obstacles and get things done.
