Re:ICE wants its mask back, and hired a company to ask on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:14PM (#50306037)
DHS, ICE, CBP, etc. are public employees and cowards, neither of which deserves anonymity. The public deserves to know what feckless people are killing citizens and immigrants and prosecuting the innocent.
Gotta spend money on wild gambles to not make money.
I seem to get by fine on the daily without using any LLMs. They’re just-the-right-size-to-fail.
Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @11:08AM (#50304991)
No I think it’ll just make schools more expensive and students more in debt as the banks look to charge young people with high interest rates, thus feeding the college land-trusts.

The real solution should be to make college education as free as possible instead of spending money on forever wars and $488B on DHS and the cowards who work for them.

Re:American views of higher ed decline, once again on Friday October 30, 2026 @10:38AM (#50304589)
All the colleges are pretty much land trusts designed to extract money from kids with loans. There is no concern for educating anyone as the teaching staff is underpaid across the board and most of the money sucked up by leadership and sports teams that do nothing for most of the athletes even let alone the students.

Silicon Valley dropouts and well connected wealthy people make college educated people look like fools. The Feds are trying to end the Dept of Education while boosting the Big Tech AI companies.

This should already be public information imo.
The C-suites are all nuts for LLMs. The craziest ones are trying to force their employees to adopt and be constantly sharing novel uses of Llms. What I have mostly seen as the usage by most coworkers usually involves using AI to take their notes and create a presentation or automate some tedious work. Essentially glue and pipe software program output together. One use case in particular had a coworker building find/replace macros by feeding slideshow slides to the agent describing how the macro should work. C-suite eats this shit up because they’re using “AI at work!”.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:45AM (#50240427)
Well maybe one day you’ll figure it out.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Sunday October 25, 2026 @11:55AM (#50232930)
Pal, I’m not going to keep discussing this because I have nothing left to add. I don’t know why your comment was interpreted 3 different ways, but it looks like you are resistant to taking any blame for authoring the comment. So what is there left to discuss? We’re all here to annoy you I guess is what you’ve concluded.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @08:50PM (#50217324)
I dont really care anymore to discuss this, thanks.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:50PM (#50214406)
It’s your phrasing. Reread your comment:

> this has done absolutely nothing to change how open the iPhone is.

And tell me how that doesn’t sound defeatist or come off as giving up on voting with your wallet.

I can only speak for my replies but you were too concise on your opinion that it spawned multiple interpretations. Brevity breeds misinterpretations or something or other.

Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @03:04PM (#50213853)
Convincing people to vote with their wallets is much easier than convincing them to write their pols to make laws. The latter is much harder while the former allows a message to be spread. Should people do both? Yes.
Re:Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:54PM (#50212882)
If you did that then you probably made clear your reasons which probably created mindshare with others which probably has helped the EU open up the iPhone. Don’t be so defeatist because the outcome isn’t immediately apparent.
Mpv probably isnt using a resource hogging browser engine. My gripe isn’t with VMs or scripted languages.

I’m not sure what you mean by it does not replicate well. You pick up a pen and start writing, ideally in cursive.

But then whats the difference of running an application in Tauri vs just loading up a website? It’s just mimicking a real native application without the benefits because I have to load up a browser. I already have a browser, no I don’t want your browser wrapper.
Re:We Still Use Paper on Saturday October 17, 2026 @12:33PM (#50132533)
Writing things down is handwriting. You perhaps mean “typing things out” as in using a keyboard. You get some benefits from typing things out but you don’t get many others, as handwriting requires you literally think about each letter and word as it is constructed and which actions you need to take to construct the letters and words. If I type, I type it and forget about it by design moving on to the next word not worrying at all about it. Handwriting essentially trains you to see, think, and understand longterm chains of thought; essentially deep focus on what you are doing while thinking about what is coming next. Typing only produces shortterm. Shortterm thought pairs well with brain dumping, such as on Twitter, which ends up being pretty valueless in the longterm.
Re:We Still Use Paper on Saturday October 17, 2026 @12:31PM (#50132512)
I’m writing a Kurt Vonnegut book out by hand in cursive on paper. Digital tools can’t give me the same effects and benefits of doing the same thing.
Re:We Still Use Paper on Saturday October 17, 2026 @12:29PM (#50132483)
All I hear when I read the “but it’s just a useful tool” takes is “hey it’s fine if we use LLMs to kill people and take away their dignity and ability to make a living because it generates documents for me”.
Sure can you speak up a little more? and make it a little zestier? and not mind downvotes?
Americans love sugary factory-dust garbage of course they think it’s a treat. Non-US flights have 100x better service and amenities.
I also avoid installing Tauri apps too. Anything that loads Javascript that’s not my browser is a bad smell and potential resource hog IMO.
Surprise it’s speed wars between Electron apps. Steam is based on Chromium/Electron.
I definitely don’t leave the resource hog Steam running, because it can be slow and terrible. I turned off Steam Overlay and Notifications to get substantial speed up improvements.
Re:I know why Mathematicians weep on Thursday October 15, 2026 @11:41AM (#50105310)
And how! All the “nothing has changed, stop whining posts” are neglecting that they haven’t had to go look for a job. My previous company became quite toxic about LLMs and employee usage. It’s not “move over to the paradigm or get left behind” instead it was “jump on the hype-wagon and sing LLM’s praises all day, every day or you’re out”.
Re:ICE Planning $100M 'Nightmare' Domestic Spy Program on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:10PM (#50095345)
Exactly this; how do you have a country of law and order if you don’t extend at least the prosecution rights to the people within it’s borders, citizen or not?
Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:52AM (#50071779)
Apple (and all of big tech) doesn't want a moment of your life to exist where you're not mindlessly staring into an screen.
