Explain to me how a VPN makes your connection faster.
Re:The Cryptographic Doom Principle on Thursday April 16, 2015 @04:25AM (#9386585)
HN is not and never will be an appropriate stage for cryptographic review.
Re:The Cryptographic Doom Principle on Tuesday April 14, 2015 @03:53PM (#9376827)
If you believe that "don't roll your own crypto" is some kind of absurd mantra the security industry uses to keep us in business, I recommend that you roll your own crypto, and keep us in business.
Re:Show HN: Figure, a Fig powered mini-Heroku on Sunday February 15, 2015 @11:41AM (#9053081)
Exactly. A setuid `delort-container` utility would be a good start.
Re:Show HN: Figure, a Fig powered mini-Heroku on Sunday February 15, 2015 @07:18AM (#9052416)
* Add figure ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:ALL to sudoer file.

This is cute.

Re:Show HN: Go channels as a C library (with Obj-C wrapper) on Wednesday October 01, 2014 @08:25PM (#8398729)
Cheers for the response.

My question about deallocation was regarding the resource though, not the channel.

Honestly, while from a best practice sense it shouldn't be too hard (You need to either send or free a resource when you're done with it), in practice my intuition is that codebases using this will be rife with exciting use after free bugs.

Seperately, have you done any testing to see what valgrind makes of it?

Re:Show HN: Go channels as a C library (with Obj-C wrapper) on Wednesday October 01, 2014 @12:42PM (#8395824)
Uhhh, except that this in no way actually implements CSP, given that more than one actor can just hang onto a resource despite having passed a pointer to someone else?

Who's meant to deal with freeing? Do you necessitate GC?

It's also fairly distasteful that all type safety is discarded.

I got onto the second screen and ragequit.

It seems that touching any surface causes instant death?
Re:Why Go Is Not Good on Monday June 30, 2014 @12:27AM (#7963696)
"The language" ?

C doesn't define behaviour of a null deref, but most compilers map a -rwx page there to ensure that attempts to deref fault.

In what circumstance do they not?

Re:Why Go Is Not Good on Sunday June 29, 2014 @09:58PM (#7963311)
that's what mapping an -rwx page at 0x0 does, and as a result it segfaults, which is an access violation.
Re:Famo.us open to everyone on Monday May 19, 2014 @04:18PM (#7769525)
Scroll from the top to the bottom (or vice versa) really hard.

Watch the "3d layout engine" flip out thoroughly (tested only on chrome stable on darwin)

Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @08:38AM (#6984528)
I'm from Australia.

We basically have a gimme with the E3, but it has the degree requirement.

Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @07:22AM (#6984286)
Oh right. As you were :)
Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @07:22AM (#6984285)
Yeah, trust me on this; they don't presume shit.

So far there's a pile of documents about 30cm high, and that hasn't yet been enough to appease USCIS.

Re:Zen room for Vim: Focsuing only on the essential on Monday December 30, 2013 @07:00AM (#6984224)
If you've fullscreened the vim container (eg, gvim macvim) then

    set lines=80
Will center it. Not super complex in vanilla vim :)
Re:Programming Language Analysis on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:58AM (#6984219)
I was very sad to discover that most of the hits (I only checked one page) for slash on stackoverflow are actually questions involving the slash character (Generally http request parsing)
Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:50AM (#6984203)
For l1b there's no actual visa requirement, but the burden of proof for eligibility is still set incredibly high.

I understand to some degree the rationale behind the absurd process, at the same time it's incredibly frustrating to have a company that wants me here, and no avenue or realistic end in sight to make it happen.

Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:49AM (#6984199)
Or because it's too expensive. Or it's getting in the way of more important things. Or too stressful. Or someone at the uni is making their life miserable. Or one of the other 10 million reasons that people drop out.

To presume that this decision is entirely motivated by how hard uni is is astonishingly naive, imo.

Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:42AM (#6984185)
I dropped out super early. Worked for some software companies, built some internets.

Trying to get a US visa now, the decision to not get a degree is pretty bitter. That said, this is the first and I optimistically anticipate the last time a degree would have been any use to me, so I'll just power through and hope for the best.

Re:[ask hn]How many of you are dropouts? on Monday December 30, 2013 @06:41AM (#6984183)
That's probably true for a largish percentage, but it's a huge generalisation that does nothing to actually help OP with his question.
Re:Zen room for Vim: Focsuing only on the essential on Saturday December 28, 2013 @04:52PM (#6976794)
I'm so confused, why does this need a specific thing?

I'll just fullscreen {g,mac}vim and only have one pane if I'm set on doing this.

People still host things on sourceforge? Most user hostile UI ever.

Email sent. Looking forward to hearing back.

If only there were some convenient lookup service to tell you who-currently-is the person you'd need to contact.
Re:Web Domain White Elephant Exchange has concluded on Thursday December 26, 2013 @02:07AM (#6965501)
Yeah, seconds after posting I got the same email :)
Re:Sourcing.io on Thursday December 26, 2013 @02:05AM (#6965494)
Right, so I'll just come right out and say this:

What the flying fuck?

I already get a TON of recruiterspam (much of it hilariously inaccurate, like offering me a relocation bonus to move to the city I was living in).

Based on their "How do you find engineers" answer

  > We scour the web, and use multiple different sources of public data to find candidates. Next we put all that information through a variety of different algorithms to try and separate the wheat from the chaff.
I would presume that you're gunna scrape my github, notice that I've got code in a couple of big projects, and then proceed to email me? How the hell do I opt out? Or view the profile that you've got for me?
Re:Web Domain White Elephant Exchange has concluded on Wednesday December 25, 2013 @06:16PM (#6964665)
So how are we organising the transfers? Private message?
