So bland. Call me nostalgic but I really miss the diversity (but consistency) of the Windows XP-era of icon design.

Can you explain this as Richard would have?

Lighting was the killer app for electricity.
AI in search I could go for:

"Find that meme I downloaded last year with the girl standing by the burning house"

Creating AI slop though? No thanks.

To drive "engagement". Hardly a surprise. Still a disappointment.
For context, Optus is one of the Australian telcos, and triple-zero is what you call instead of 911.

Totally agree.

Very sorry for the loss of your friend.
Re:Reports of widespread power cuts in Spain and Portugal on Monday April 28, 2025 @08:57AM (#43821016)
I worked as a cashier at a large UK supermarket when I was a student. In our training we were told that if there was an outage with the cash registers we should ask shoppers to estimate how much their groceries cost and accept what they told us. Payment could be by cash or cheque.

Apparently when this had been done in the past shoppers were generally honest & relatively accurate.

Re:You might not need a phone case any more on Monday April 14, 2025 @12:31AM (#43678076)
The main reason I use a phone case is to stop the phone slipping from my hand in the first place. My current and previous phones (Pixel 8 & 5) are alarmingly smooth on all sides.
Re:I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks on Wednesday March 19, 2025 @09:12AM (#43411462)
Nonsense.

Saying that as a European who lived in the US for a few years, now residing in Australia.

A shame, because this was a very small portion of the overall video, which was otherwise fascinating.

In my office, when we swipe our entry cards at the security gates, a screen at the gate tells us which lift to take based on the floor we work on, and sets the lift to go to that floor. It's all connected.
Re:Launch Darkly is having issues on Wednesday February 21, 2024 @06:54PM (#39461315)
Our Feature Flag values are being retrieved correctly, as far as we can tell, but we're getting 504 Gateway Time-outs from https://app.launchdarkly.com

Re:DiskClick: Ever wanted to hear Old Hard drive sounds on Monday February 19, 2024 @11:11PM (#39437986)
And hear them amplified through the sides of your "mini tower" case.
Re:Why is Prettier rock solid? on Monday February 19, 2024 @11:09PM (#39437969)
Skimming past the capital "P", I read this as "why is prettier rock, solid" . . . and was left perplexed, as most rocks are solid.
Re:How Programming Languages Got Their Names on Thursday February 08, 2024 @04:41AM (#39300079)
Wasn't this how AltaVista got its name, but as a whiteboard remnant rather than post-it notes?
What if someone does a hit and run against your unattended car?
> If people are willing to pay a price for a home

Poorly-regulated lending means that it's the banks who are willing to lend the money. Home owners pay what they have to out of necessity, not willingness.

(speaking as someone who owns a house in Sydney)

Not if you end up having to help your children buy their house(s).

Can you cite an example of a journalist writing an article that makes such an accusation?
