Show HN: Reverse Engineering (Kind of) SQLite in Go

https://github.com/RichardKnop/minisql

I have been working on reverse engineering SQLite in Go. Not exactly as I am borrowing some features from other databases so it is not a 1 to 1 exact replica but the main idea is the same and I have been keeping it as close as possible. A simple embedded single file database. It's an ongoing effort but I wanted to share what I have done so far after over a year.

Show HN: Simple Golang Ragserver

https://github.com/RichardKnop/ragserver

A small RAG server written in Golang with sqlite and weaviate used for Corpus/knowledge base and Gemini model. It provides API to upload PDF files to the corpus and to query for an answer from specific documents. Returned answer contains references with specific pages where the answer was sourced from. Hopefully at least somebody will find it useful. Please provide any feedback, suggest new...

Re:Ask HN: How's the job hunt going? (For those laid off) on Saturday November 26, 2022 @06:52PM (#33758301)
Do you live alone or with other people and you split the rent? How much do you pay for council tax and bills? 600 is very cheap in London.

If you took out mortgage when interest rates were really low, it’s possible to have your own place and spend about that much per month if you live frugally (well at least until you need to remortgage in few years and rates might be much higher). If you are renting though I also finding it difficult to believe. I was spending around 1600 pounds per month and I was living very modest live, spending little and trying to save as much of my income as I could.
So more small businesses by people living in the area would be encouraged (think small mom-and-pop shops) rather than multinational chain restaurants. It’s a good thing.
He was in a custody for about a year, he was later sentenced to a suspended year in prison. He still lives in Tokyo, no idea what he does for work now though.
That was Bitfinex as far as I remember, exchange based in Hong Kong. They are the guys behind Tether which also many people think is not backed up by real assets.
Could be a factor at tech companies where lot of compensation is in a form of equity options. Especially smaller / medium sized tech companies have had their stocks go down by 50-80% in some cases. So now you’re earning much less than you thought you did plus inflation is out of control further reducing your real income.
I agree, this is pretty normal across the industry. Sales people just trying to do their job and sell their product. Sometimes they are quite persistent but why complain, if you are not interested in the product they are selling, just ignore their emails.
This isn’t exclusive to Datadog. Anybody with some sort of senior or lead engineering role often gets these emails from various companies. I have received such emails from companies other than Datadog many times.

Are you sure about that? I know Google Translate says "vlast" but I speak a Slavic language and "vlast" means motherhood/home in my language. Could be just the online translation not being accurate?
Re:Postgres is a great pub/sub and job server (2019) on Saturday December 18, 2021 @08:47AM (#29604439)
You can use transactional outbox pattern to solve this.
Very time consuming so probably lot of companies will skip on this to deliver features faster.

Having robust documentation that contains all the knowledge so a completely new team without any project knowledge can easily deploy/support the project can be a big task, especially for large projects.

Even with really good documentation, there will always be required some handover and initial training from the maker team in my experience, it is almost impossible to avoid this.

I guess during sprint planning, if this requirement is being included and the estimates from developers start doubling suddenly the product team might compromise in order to move faster.

The name is a good representation of times we live in. I wonder if this is a sign we are nearing the top of the current bubble.

I buy it during my daily walk to groceries shop.
Re:Young Goldman Sachs bankers ask for 80-hour week cap on Saturday March 20, 2021 @09:26AM (#26523079)
You don't need 3k per month that is certainly lavish and I would expect that to be supported by 2 incomes so a couple living together and splitting rent and bills 50/50. If you are living alone you should aim for about half of that in central London.

Oh wow that's nice. Yeah, Amazon was definitely a better name choice.

Re:Ask HN: What is a better approach to interviewing? on Monday September 14, 2020 @06:26PM (#24475853)
Presentation sounds really vague to me, it could mean anything from 1-2 hours of prep or a day or two of intense preparation to make a good presentation.

Also number 1 (writing simple API matching a spec) - this doesn't require prep if it's using language that I am using currently / have been using in my daily job for a long time.

But I have found often been required to write code in languages that are on my CV but I haven't used them in 5+ years.

Also talking about past failures, career history. I can barely remember in detail 2-3 years so I would need to spend a little time to just be prepared about a random very specific question about a project I worked on 5 years ago that might come up during interview because it would silly if I didn't remember (which I wouldn't if you ask me randomly about something I did 5 years ago).

Small things like these add up, obviously the more you want to get a certain job the more time you would spend preparing, it's only natural. If you are only looking around you might just wing it since you don't care much.

I am not criticising your system, it seems pretty sensible actually btw.

A lot more since you have to prepare for the interview / interviews. So there's several hours to prepare at least.
Re:Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition on Thursday August 20, 2020 @03:54PM (#24228017)
Pull up bar is not something I can't install in my apartment as landlord won't approve. I am only renting so can't do many modifications here. I would love to have that option.
Re:Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition on Thursday August 20, 2020 @05:10AM (#24221370)
I agree, if you got a house with spare room then it should be easy to build a basic gym, if you don't drive and don't need car, you can even use garage as a small gym. But in apartments it's not so easy unless they are quite big. Once I own a house I would probably convert garage into a gym as I don't really have interest in cars or driving.
Re:Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition on Wednesday August 19, 2020 @09:58PM (#24219111)
And by the way I looked at that reddit and almost all posts are from the gym, to do any of those exercises (seriously, I mean normal weight like 200-300 pounds for squats or deadlift) at home you must be very rich and have a large house with basically a private gym.
Re:Secret gyms and the economics of prohibition on Wednesday August 19, 2020 @09:53PM (#24219073)
You are assuming you have spare room for this equipment (ignoring that the prices you quoted are quite high and actually it costs more for serious equipment if you want realistic weights of 200-300 pounds which is not even that heavy).

I rent a room in downtown of a big city and I simply don't have space for equipment (my room is mostly just bed with small kitchen and bathroom). Don't assume everybody is rich and owns a house with spare room / garage where you can put equipment.

I am 30+ years old and never lived in a place where I would have spare space for gym equipment. You must be very privileged if you have that (top 1% at least).

Thanks for downvote though.
