Re:Apple CEO Impressed by Remote Work, Sees Permanent Changes on Tuesday September 22, 2020 @11:39AM (#24555790)
Interesting how cherry picking quotes can push whatever narrative you want. In a different article, it said “while there are advantages to the temporary system, a physical presence at the office is irreplaceable, Cook said.” https://appleinsider.com/articles/20/09/22/apple-ceo-tim-coo...
Re:Munchery Shuts Down on Monday January 21, 2019 @11:16PM (#18965960)
hmm i’ve thought about this but thought it would be way too expensive. any more details on how you did this? what area do you live in? how much approx was it? you let them in your house in the afternoon and they cook and have it ready for when you go home?
Re:What I Learned from Working 32 Hours a Week on Sunday January 06, 2019 @10:31AM (#18838759)
I think he was saying before his 32-hour work week experiment, he was working 7-5
I haven’t had a chance to look through all the links yet but thanks for following up! Will definitely review.
Regarding your first point - any recommendations on articles to read on best practice?
Re:Thoughts on the Late 2016 MacBook Pro on Monday February 20, 2017 @08:30PM (#13692505)
This may be the Apple fanboy in me talking, but I think Apple was in a tough spot- seems like the tMBP has supplied-constrained components (I think it was hard to get in-store even 3 months after the launch), so their options were- delay it until they had a large number of laptops built already, charge an "acceptable" price and have people wait months for one, or charge more and have the price keep demand down. They went with the last option because, well, they can. I'm guessing the price should go down soon now that supply has somewhat caught up with demand.

There were lots of question on whether they could monetize on mobile when they IPO'd. I think their stock went down 33-50% from their IPO price until they showed they could make the transition.

Re:Apple Watch – 6 Months Later, Not That Great on Saturday January 30, 2016 @06:33PM (#11004318)
Hmm, I've had the watch for about 6 months too. I agree with the review that I rarely switch from the main screen, and almost never use any apps. Charging is a little bit of a pain but not nearly as much of a dealbreaker as he's making it seem. And I feel like the sports band is super easy to use and way better than normal watches.
It seems crazy that they would do that, but I thought the same when they got rid of the CD drive on a Mac, included only one port on the Macbook, etc. I know people claim it's to make the phone thinner, but I'm hoping there's other reasons that are driving the decision as well.
Re:Working at Netflix on Tuesday January 20, 2015 @05:41PM (#8920173)
Well, yeah, if the company isn't doing well and leadership changes, obviously that'll trickle down to employees and culture. No one said it'll be like this forever at Netflix, but it does sound like they put a heavy emphasis on "culture" now.
Re:Ask HN: Hackers who cook on Tuesday September 23, 2014 @01:30PM (#8356623)
Curious, what is your cost per meal, approx? I live next to Whole Foods and buying ingredients daily usually makes the meal ~$7-$10, which is about the same as buying a pretty healthy prepared meal.

I do think buying/cooking in bulk will save money but that's harder to plan for and I don't have many recipes to cook in bulk.

Re:The ROI on being an entrepreneur vs. an employee on Thursday June 12, 2014 @12:23AM (#7881809)
Not in this case, because a lot of business fail in a year or two, and a lot businesses survive for 10, 20+ years.

I'll bet there's a lot of '$ made' graphs for entrepreneurs that don't go up much, or even go down; and a few that are hockey-sticks. There's really no point of averaging the two out into a scenario that rarely/never happens.

Re:The ROI on being an entrepreneur vs. an employee on Wednesday June 11, 2014 @08:46PM (#7881246)
There seems to be so much variance in starting a company that I'm not sure how valid it is to use the 'averages' to create an earnings graph.
Re:Amazon, in Threat to UPS, Tries Its Own Deliveries on Thursday April 24, 2014 @03:54PM (#7642568)
Had a similar debate with my girlfriend when she suggested Amazon would take over their entire delivery process. Warehouse to warehouse, and warehouse to major city don't really seem like they would be a problem. The middle-of-nowhere deliveries would cause the most headaches, and be the least cost-effective. I guess the question is how much of their total deliveries do those comprise of.
Re:Apple security rules leave inherited iPad useless on Wednesday March 05, 2014 @10:13AM (#7347351)
Why wouldn't they just completely wipe/reset it?
Re:f.lux has been updated to a new version on Wednesday October 16, 2013 @11:30AM (#6560196)
curious-- I do this sometimes (often) too, but how does f.lux help you tear yourself away?
This statement seems to be a general 'complaint' about Apple, rather than specific to the new iPhone models introduced today. How is a fingerprint scanner restricting users' essential freedoms?
Re:Ubuntu Edge will miss $32M crowdfunding target on Saturday August 03, 2013 @04:37AM (#6151515)
Not very easy to extrapolate from that, but Blackberry sold 2.7 million of their Z10 and that was considered a failure, so I don't think 20,000 phones will prove anything.
Re:Ubuntu Edge on Tuesday July 23, 2013 @09:02PM (#6093915)
all this is just words on paper right now- a competent marketing team can make any product sound amazing/indispensible. tack on the standard kickstarter/indiegogo delays, and this feels like as far from a no brainer as can be.

i don't see how you could trust any company, let alone a company making their first phone, with $600/$830 before seeing and playing with the software OR the hardware.

Re:iOS 7 on Monday June 10, 2013 @03:30PM (#5856682)
yeah, the thin, light text didn't look great during the presentation, but i can't imagine they wouldn't test it in bright sunlight/normal mobile phone situations, so I'm gonna wait til its actually out and in front of me to judge.
Re:1Password 50% off today on Wednesday May 29, 2013 @11:59AM (#5786999)
I started using LastPass a few years ago- any compelling reasons to switch to 1Password?
how long have you been contracting/how many clients have you had? imo, working for client is way, way worse (in terms of how rewarding and interesting the work is, and work flexibility) than working for a company. but hey, if you enjoy it...
can you really 'come and go as you please' if you are a contractor, or even if you are working on your own thing?
Re:I Just Paid Facebook $7 on Sunday October 21, 2012 @11:28PM (#4681731)
I was hoping for some more content when I clicked on this. I am curious about the sponsored posts viability and popularity; the article just sounded like one of the million other 'I told you not to buy FB stock' posts with a HN link bait title.
Re:Clipper, the Caltrain nemesis on Friday September 21, 2012 @05:39PM (#4555983)
I feel like I'm missing something. Caltrain charges different depending on where you get off or get on right? How would it know what to charge unless you tagged on/off at the particular stations?

If Caltrain has monthly passes for unlimited rides (I have no idea if they do or not), I agree swiping should not be necessary- especially since I think Muni's monthly pass allows you to just get on/off a train without swiping on the train itself (if the station doesn't have a turnstile).

I like the layout of the site, but the sign-up/buy-now/login buttons should be more visible. 'Buy now' currently doesn't look clickable (hovering over it, the mouse icon is still a pointer), and 'buy now' and 'learn more' don't stand out from the graphic at all.
Re:$10 In-N-Out delivery to anywhere in SF on Saturday July 28, 2012 @07:33PM (#4306933)
Pretty cool marketing tool, but probably not all that practical- no guarantee delivery time (at least not on the front page), and hour-old in-n-out burger/fries/shakes pretty much ruin the in-n-out experience.
