Does CompilerWorks compile between different versions of a SQL database? For example, making it much simpler to upgrade from MySQL 5.6 to MySQL 5.7.
Triplebyte tests candidates with the types of questions they'd get at Software Developer interviews.

Hired does not.

Thus, candidates on Hired that are attractive to recruiters are due to their resume, so they already get solicitations on LinkedIn, and easy access to interviews.

On the other hand, someone with a less "glamorous" resume could pass the Triplebyte screening process, and that gives signal to recruiters that the candidate is more likely to pass their company's interview process.

Re:Opencats Applicant Tracking System on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @04:18AM (#24418648)
How much usage would there be if a simple Open Source ATS were built from scratch? I think it would be a fun project.
Re:Opencats Applicant Tracking System on Wednesday September 09, 2020 @04:16AM (#24418636)
Hi y'all. Some of the comments here are mentioning some of the technical issues that this system has.

In addition, the license that it uses has restrictions and is not OSI approved, so some people wouldn't call it Open Source.

Is there demand for an Open Source Applicant Tracking System to be created?

If you would be interested, please comment here: https://github.com/rhc2104/hiringhats/issues/1

Re:Ask HN: Demand for Open Source Applicant Tracking System? on Monday September 07, 2020 @01:29PM (#24400970)
I personally find OpenCATS's interface confusing. Also, it seems to rely on having the applicant enter structured data, rather than embedding the resume on the candidate's page, which is a worse experience for both the candidate and resume evaluation.

As far as the license, this clause is limiting for some businesses: "You may not use the Licensed Software to operate in or as a time-sharing, outsourcing, service bureau, application service provider or managed service provider environment."

Ask HN: Demand for Open Source Applicant Tracking System?

Hi y'all,I was wondering if companies would use a simple open-source Applicant Tracking System.Right now, the only open-source-ish Applicant Tracking System is OpenCATS. However, OpenCATS is not on an OSI-approved license, and hasn't been updated too much in the last few years. Thanks!

Perhaps Western Governors University could be a good fit. https://www.wgu.edu/online-it-degrees/computer-science.html

The philosophy of WGU is that you pass self-paced courses by passing tests, so people that already know the material can complete the courses quickly.

hanspedah, people believe 5% is the death rate that occurs if medical services are not available (and would thus be much higher than the death rate if medical services are available). And if there is no mitigation, the vast majority of people that would need medical care wouldn't be able to get it.

Indeed | Software Engineer, Integrations | Austin, TX | ONSITE | $116,000-$142,000 plus bonuses and LTIPS

Indeed is the #1 job site in the world with over 250 million unique visitors every month. I feel proud to work at a company that helps all types of people get jobs. We even have an app called Job Spotter https://jobspotter.indeed.com/ where we pay people to take help wanted signs, which we put on our site to show even more job listings to job seekers. If you'd like to read stories from people who got jobs, you can visit https://gotajob.indeed.com/

I am currently hiring the first Software Engineer in Austin to build out an Integrations Engineering team. The idea behind the Integrations Engineering team is to focus on integrating data sources, and become the go-to experts in that domain. This includes being knowledgeable about the MuleSoft platform, building infrastructure to help make future integrations easier, and helping other teams with their integrations. A significant portion of the work is not MuleSoft-related, and MuleSoft experience is not required. As the first Software Engineer focused on Integrations, there is the potential to grow into the go-to expert for Integrations at the company.

The job listing is not live yet, but will go live soon. If you're interested in applying, please email me at [email protected] .

In addition, there are other jobs available at https://www.indeed.jobs/ . We are currently hiring engineers in Austin, San Francisco, Sunnyvale, Seattle, Tokyo, Singapore, and Hyderabad. If you're interested in other jobs, you can also email me at [email protected] . We are proud to list base salary ranges for all of our positions, and our bonuses and LTIPs can yield significant additional compensation.

Wester Governors University is like that to some extent. A class is completed when you pass a test. So some people that already have the knowledge get the degree pretty quickly.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll think about adding more of a high level overview in the first step, with rough pseudocode of the end result.

That said, I don't think I want to have a step where "they write pseudocode", because a lot of people would just skip that step without thinking about it.

I haven't personally used zyBooks, but they seem to have a similar vision. Although from what I can see on the Internet, reviews of their materials seem to be mixed.
Thanks for the feedback!

I'll think about what can be done about the last-step hint for Spiral Matrix. I guess a reason why this tutorial format is not more widespread is that it's easy for the hints to be "off".

I created SkillUpper because I was thinking about how Computer Science learning could be more interactive.

Codecademy pioneered a more interactive REPL style of learning for basic programming.

I felt that this interactive step-by-step approach could be used to learn other parts of Computer Science more efficiently.

Because of algorithms being highly represented in software engineering interviews, it seemed like a good place to start. But this step-by-step format could also be used to teach other parts of Computer Science.
