I would also say "strict" ACID is become just another marketing term. I think what is more important is evaluating a databases support of different consistency and isolation levels. As well what level of availability do they support with these transaction guarantees? Do they support fail over to an active replica on the fly with no downtime? Are minority replicas available during network partition?
"strict" ACID can mean a lot of different things. There is a lot of levels of consistency and they prevent different types of issues with data correction and isolation. I think database vendors should clarify what consistency model they mean as defined by https://jepsen.io/consistency
How does fauna's consistency guarantees compare to coakroach, spanner and yugabyte? It is difficult to compare because different vendors use different terminology. For example spanner supports 'external consistency'. And Coakroach says it supports serializable as defined by ANSI. Is this the same as what Fauna calls strict serializable?

What did you end up using? What are good solutions on a java platform?
Re:Lift: 10x more productive than any mvc framework on Thursday December 09, 2010 @11:09PM (#1990563)
We spent a fair amount of time evaluating lift, play and other frameworks recently. We ended up choosing Play for these reasons:

Developer Productivity - Having worked with a lot of the major frameworks they are all very comparable. You can say the same things about Play, GWT, you don't worry about the plumbing, setting up routes, ajax, etc. ...

Learning Curve - You really need to know Scala and functional programming to be effective with lift. Even though lift itself might be more productive, easier, etc. none of that matters if you are not experienced in Scala. And becoming truly experienced in Scala takes a fair amount of time.

Play is plain Java and so it took the developers on are team less than a day to become productive with Play, they have a great tutorial that walks through all the major parts of a Play framework.

Developer Perception: Seriously emacs? Textmate is the only way to go.

Developer Availability - Well you might be able to find Lift developers, but they come at a major premium because they know Scala. Java developers are much more common and don't have the major premium. And there are a lot more Java than Scala developers (DP charges a very healthy $250 / hour - http://www.quora.com/What-are-the-going-hourly-contracting-r... )

Templating - Yep most frameworks have them, pretty common.

Plugins - Play has those in the form of modules

In the end I would agree with Raible's findings, there is not a huge difference in frameworks.

I do find one thing curious about all of David Pollak's rants are they always reference Foursquare and Novell.

This website http://www.hellokeepa.com is also doing some interesting things with what looks to be the onscroll event, the page continuously wraps around. Also notice how you can drag the page left and right.

Basecamp has one major limitation for me and that is only people within your company can track time against projects. I work with a lot of independent contracts and I wanted to put them in separate companies, but still have them track their time in Basecamp. I have talked with support and this is a "feature" which they are sticking with, very frustrating.
Re:What It's Like to Work at Apple on Monday November 08, 2010 @03:05PM (#1883768)
I am pretty sure Oracle does this as well.
Even if it is not the first day, I think the point is well taken that this needs to happen ASAP. I have worked as a consultant at large corporations and have seen developers go months without ever checking in code.
I run a small independent consulting group with workers distributed all around the world. We are currently close to closing a project with Fortune 500 Consumer Electronics Company (sorry it is not Apple). I also have a project with a small but well funded company putting there business on-line. We are looking for experienced Flex, Java and Scala programmers. Send me an email and we can talk more about the projects.

What are some of the unique business models around data monitization? The most obvious are pay walls and generating content to drive advertising. Any thoughts on how successful paid access to data is, like with imdb pro?

I am taking an existing business on-line that specializes in the marketing data of team sports (football, baseball, basketball, hockey, etc). I am looking for a partner to help out so If any one has an interest in team sports, marketing and technology send me an email.
Re:Ask HN: Help me understand online payment gateways on Friday October 08, 2010 @12:41PM (#1772231)
Can anyone make recommendations for merchant accounts in the US? Are there any that you would avoid? beanstream, authorize.net and Braintree all look pretty similiar, are there any real differences? Thank you!

Why fork? Just go with Scala! http://www.scala-lang.org/

Re:Ask HN: no co-founder, no business plan, no funding? on Thursday June 03, 2010 @11:32AM (#1401576)
I am a busy guy with 5 kids, full time job and a wife but would still be very interested in helping out. That is if the business is interesting of course. I have experience with scaling on the cheap, technical development, etc. Contact is in my profile.
I am going to second the fish smell. Google his email address and you find a twitter account the tweets the best craigs list w4m, wtf with that? How can you have time to run a valid business while combing craigs list for garbage.
Seth Godin posted a killer idea on his blog (http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2010/05/ipad-killer-...) and we have been thinking of building it. We would love a small angel investor =) Email is in my profile if you are interested.

Re:Ask HN: What payment gateways do you use for your app? on Thursday March 11, 2010 @01:43AM (#1183210)
I am trying to figure out if I want to accept credit cards on my site, instead of sending the customer to a different site, how I can become PCI Compliant. It sounds like for a low volume of transactions you just have to answer a questioner and keep decent security precautions. Is that true? Also does your host have to be PCI Certified or can it be any VPS host like linode?

Ask HN: Is any one else frustrated with Adobe Air and Flex?

We recently upgrade to Flex SDK 3.5 and realized that Adobe Air auto-update functionality is completely broken. It is really frustrating to have a complete regression on a major part of the software. The stories of a decline in development quality seem to be now manifesting themselves. Is anyone else feeling frustrated with the lack of quality control in Adobe Air and Flex? I filed the bug...

Re:How to find reliable programmers? on Thursday September 17, 2009 @02:33AM (#827552)
Programmers who read hacker news is a good starting indicator :) I would also look at their previous work and how much of an online presence they have, articles, open source projects, blogs, websites, etc. And a shameless plug - if you need an independent and highly reliable programmer, drop me a line ryan at anvilflex.com
I would discourage the use of amphetamines without a real mental need, they do have some very serious side effects. However I have found due to a combination of mental disorders - mostly depression related - I am unable to function without amphetamines during certain times of the month.

As an alternative to stronger amphetamines I have found provigil - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modafinil - to be a wonder drug. It doesn't stay in the body as long, yet gives you enough umph to get going on those real tough days.

Maybe there is an opportunity here for hackers. Some sort of job swapping / training site. It seems a lot of hackers would like to work a "manual job" and I would bet a lot of people doing manual labors would like to learn about computers.
