AWESOME!
Re:What It's Like On Day One As An Apple Employee on Friday January 27, 2012 @01:11AM (#3517323)
Lots of free lunches: the dregs left over after the salespeople have their noon meetings.
Re:Did Google kill the long tail? on Thursday January 26, 2012 @01:40AM (#3513137)
This infographic is like watching a politician spin their selfish agenda into a "think of the children!" plea. Pretty funny actually.
I don't understand why the TC diaspora gets so much attention. Have they earned the spotlight for reasons other than just being inflammatory?
Something like Ars Technica, which is way meatier than the hyperbole and cheerleading that the PandoLemonCrunch school of venture journalism is capable of.
Re:Ubuntu rips up drop-down menus on Tuesday January 24, 2012 @10:07PM (#3508199)
Wouldn't happen. Abandoning user choice and configurability seems to be in vogue with designers these days. We're just slouching our way toward our future as passive appliance users.

(I totally agree - either turn it into a keyboard shortcut, or a reserved 16x16px spyglass icon in the upper right hand corner of the menu bar...)

Murdoch just knows that post-Season 8 Simpsons isn't worth streaming. ;)
Re:RIM CEOs to Give Up Top Posts in Shuffle on Sunday January 22, 2012 @10:04PM (#3498809)
Not if the status quo is terrible.
Re:Ask HN: Are the HN forums losing their civility? on Sunday January 22, 2012 @06:55PM (#3498318)
I wouldn't mind moving the articles whose discussions have completely gone to seed into a separate subforum.

My favorite forums are ones that don't allow the discussion of politics or religion. The same is true for real-life discussions with acquaintances that you don't thoroughly know yet. There is nothing to be gained from a discussion when everybody's emotions are fully inflamed.

Re:Google's "free food" is not free on Sunday January 22, 2012 @05:19PM (#3497937)
This is SOP for negotiation. Candidates do this shit too, trying to claim some sort of inflated salary boost for every thing they give up from their previous employer. It's a game and the lesser negotiator loses out.
Re:Google's "free food" is not free on Sunday January 22, 2012 @05:17PM (#3497924)
> willing to take advantage of someone who wasn't skilled at the whole negotiating thing.

What? That is the ENTIRE POINT of negotiation. It's a game. The more skilled player wins, and it's true for job offers, house buying, car buying, street markets, everything.

Don't hate the player, hate the game. :)

Re:Ask PG: Can you display plus.google.com domains? on Sunday January 22, 2012 @12:20AM (#3495735)
If the Chrome plugin works fine, can't HN just expose a toggle in the user preferences for injecting that same Javascript code? A bit of a hack, yes, but it'd probably do for the time being.
Re:Pictos Icon Font Server on Friday January 20, 2012 @10:41PM (#3492518)
What are the advantages in using a remote service for this vs. hosting them yourself? I'm somewhat averse to taking out additional dependencies on other services if no compelling reason exists.
Then I can't see 80% of the "Show HN" stuff that enters the newsfeed!
I count three ads above the fold. I believe the results below those top ads are still search results, just presented in different modalities.
Re:Gmail Has 350 MM Active Users on Friday January 20, 2012 @02:34AM (#3488714)
New phone activations, maybe? Android phones work a lot better when they're paired with Google account - you might not use GMail, but you might like the backup and calendar sync features.
Re:Page layout algorithm improvement on Thursday January 19, 2012 @11:16PM (#3488286)
Their instant preview feature tells you exactly that. The paragraph containing your search terms is marked by a red rectangle.
Re:Larry Page: Google+ now has 90 million users globally on Thursday January 19, 2012 @04:50PM (#3486959)
RTFA: "Google’s Larry Page has announced that Google+ now has 90 million users globally, doubling the number from three months ago. Page also said that G+ has a 60% ‘daily engagement’ rate. This came as a part of Google’s Q4 and fiscal year 2011 financial reports."
Re:The Daily WTF goes white to "support" SOPA on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @07:37PM (#3482625)
Paula Bean approves of this post.
I can see there being a market. My mom buys all her crap if and only if it says "Mac compatible" on the box. I remind her that it's all the same hardware standards these days, but the persecution complex that was ingrained in her from the bad old 1990s--countless ADB input devices, a IIsi with its own flavor of NuBus, and then later a couple awful Performas with funky PDS slots--she's just used to assuming that hardware just won't work unless it's specifically blessed as Apple compatible.
Re:Google's Anti-SOPA & PIPA Page on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @01:03AM (#3478247)
Is FB going to do something similar? If not, why not? I imagine the tag-team of Google and FB would do wonders for educating the entire public on this crucial issue.
Re:Google's Anti-SOPA & PIPA Page on Wednesday January 18, 2012 @12:58AM (#3478221)
I'm taking the opportunity to spam my friends and family with this news. "Check out the Google logo today! Wonder why it's a big black bar?" It's jarring and it piques people's curiosity. I think it'll do good things for educating the public.
Re:The World's Worst Website Ever on Tuesday January 17, 2012 @06:59PM (#3477125)
He's just early to the SOPA protest party.
Re:The World's Worst Website Ever on Tuesday January 17, 2012 @06:27PM (#3477032)
I beg to differ. That distinction goes to http://www.stevesgotit.com/ , which gets bonus points for being so earnest.
Re:Software Engineering Salaries in Silicon Valley on Tuesday January 17, 2012 @06:12PM (#3476981)
Please, no more infographics...
Re:What It’s Really Like to Work at Google on Monday January 16, 2012 @09:18PM (#3473487)
I agree. HN often seems to fall prey to these linkbaity articles about trendy subjects. As users, we do a poor job of filtering for quality before we click the upvote button.
Re:Startups: Don't Host Your Blog on Tumblr on Monday January 16, 2012 @04:10PM (#3472443)
Somewhat related gripe: does anybody like the admin UI in Tumblr? It seems like important settings are scattered all over the place. I don't understand why the site view and admin views are two discrete locations, either. Has the core service received much love since David Karp's first cut?
Re:Startups: Don't Host Your Blog on Tumblr on Monday January 16, 2012 @04:08PM (#3472434)
DIY blogging software made from scratch, in 12 hours, with node.JS and Mongo. Anything else would be too mainstream for HN.
Re:Login to your Google account by scanning a QR code on Monday January 16, 2012 @02:59AM (#3469811)
Wow! This is sweet, but I wish Google had an even shorter URL for it.
