It also misses that vinyl records degrade more gracefully than CDs, IMO.
Re:1 in 5 Online Job Postings Are Either Fake or Never Filled on Tuesday January 14, 2025 @10:22AM (#42698303)
Sure, hiring is hard but the factors you mention are rare, and teams are extremely motivated to fill vacancies.
Re:The Pilgrim as a Historian on Monday November 25, 2024 @10:56AM (#42237292)
Before the destruction of the Second Temple, pilgrimage was an important part of Judaism as well.
Re:Bitwarden SDK relicensed from proprietary to GPLv3 on Friday October 25, 2024 @11:06AM (#41945986)
I looked into Bitwarden but hard to see what it offers over Psono and the pricing is significantly steeper.

n=1 but the built-in Maps on iphone seems to be fine these days. Doesn't steer me wrong, integrates with a car. Not sure what the moat here is other than name recognition or current popularity. Perhaps app integration or API consumption?
It's worth pointing out that there is a minority of physicists who don't accept the Big Bang as proven beyond doubt. An alternative theory would be a 'steady-state' universe which, as you suggest, would be much older than the ~14 BYO age. If the medium of space itself dispersed light for instance, red shifts might be observed that explain the astronomical data.
Please expand on this.

This is the key attitude to gauging whether it's worth sticking it out in academia. I tell people you really need to be 'obsessed' with science (indeed, obsession is really a key concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riaYwt0gf20). Just being interested in problem-solving isn't close to enough to put up with the low pay and rather tough working conditions. There's lots of interesting problems out there in industry.

Off-topic, but light gray font does not have good legibility.

Funny, was recently at Disneyworld and impressed by the live-action Cinderella during the nightly fireworks/lights show. Was she a robot?
Presumably the Eastern Orthodox Church which includes the Greek and Russsian branches and was centered in Constantinople/Istanbul.
Re:My Hardest Bug to Debug (2018) on Wednesday November 06, 2019 @10:09PM (#21470053)
Not a semi-colon but -

Setting up a GPO to push Microsoft updates to clients in an AD domain, I spent ~8 hours debugging why the clients couldn't connect to the WSUS server. It turned out that there was trailing whitespace in the server URL text field that was getting parsed.

As a side note, this type of story IMO doesn't actually play that well in interview situations.

Re:How Dad's Stresses Get Passed Along to Offspring on Thursday November 08, 2018 @09:17AM (#18406371)
This is part of what Eva Jablonka talks about as "soft inheritance" http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S1415...

These sorts of discoveries really push towards a re-evaluation of Lamarck's thought, frankly.

Whether the effect was large or small, there is a fundamental scientific question: how does non-ionizing radiation cause cancer? The fact that it can requires better models of how EM waves and biological matter interact.
Re:Terraform Collaboration for Everyone on Tuesday October 23, 2018 @04:30PM (#18287175)
Yeah, this appears to be accomplishing the same purpose as the 'Terragrunt' wrapper which uses DynamoDB for locking state IIRC https://github.com/gruntwork-io/terragrunt
Sidenote, but Yalom's book on group therapy is insightful in a variety of social settings: https://www.amazon.com/Theory-Practice-Group-Psychotherapy-I...
that's bogleheads.org I take it?
Nice, I've played some comparable R packages (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/units/index.html) but hopefully this is simpler to use.
Re:Theory Suggests That All Genes Affect Every Complex Trait on Wednesday June 20, 2018 @05:56PM (#17360166)
One reason for this dependence could be that DNA exists within a confined space in the nucleus. The locations of the genes are not random. eg. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S136759311...
His criticisms of Dostoyesky do not sit well. I've read several of Nabokov's books -- Lolita, Pale Fire, Speak Memory, The Defense, and Invitation to a Beheading. The last 2 are highly recommended and in general the works originally written in Russian are underrated.

Nabokov's character development and psychological penetration don't hold a candle to Dostoyevsky's though.

Re:Quantum Poetics: Why physics can’t get rid of metaphor on Friday January 26, 2018 @04:26PM (#16243033)
There are physical phenomena that do not readily become math. "Positive and minus attract" for instance does not have an obvious mathematical basis as the inverse square law.
Re:Casually removing root files on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @03:12PM (#15030259)
Ah, you're right, I mis-remembered: """ The `c', 's', and `u' attributes are not honored by the ext2, ext3, and ext4 filesystems as implemented in the current mainline Linux kernels. """
Re:Casually removing root files on Wednesday August 16, 2017 @02:03PM (#15029648)
This is only true for some filesystems. ext4 notably doesn't acknowledge -i attribute
