What kind of work?

What’s wrong with being a junior developer?
Re:Ok, Cloudflare I am leaving on Tuesday January 03, 2023 @01:39PM (#34235812)
So you are mad that the service doesn’t support what it says it doesn’t support and throw a fit online for internet points.

I give up on understanding why these things go viral.

Ask HN: Anyone get anxious when they have nothing to do?

This has always been the case for me, not sure why, but when I have nothing to do at work I get very anxious.I assume it’s because the other areas of my team are very busy and conversing on various problems and that makes me feel like dead weight and drains my energy.Open to suggestions or tips on avoiding this. I’m trying to find things to do, but I find it equally draining to fill the time at...

I’m 27 and my first job was OSGI at a Java shop.

That was some convoluted shit. Class path errors, coupled to blueprint XML and fancy IDE stuff.

I’ve worked in different languages and frameworks since and love the simplicity of Go. Excited to learn Rust

Re:Ask HN: What are you going to learn in 2023 on Sunday January 01, 2023 @02:35PM (#34209927)
Similar goals technically. What are you studying up on for networking? I’ve been doing a lot of home lab stuff
It’s pretty scary stuff. I just spent 2022 grinding without sleep and severe depression due to accidental abuse of this stuff. My doctor did not educate me well and I’ve never felt better cutting it off cold turkey.

It took me over a year to snap out of it.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage your passwords in 2023? on Sunday January 01, 2023 @02:22PM (#34209754)
I exclusively self host vault warden behind a VPN and firewall with a custom domain. Changes are automatically managed and deployed through GitHub CI/CD.

I have wireguard VPN on all my devices tunneled into my server. I also self-host the VPN since vaultwarden runs on a local Docker intranet.

If people are interested, I was going to write a step by step blog.

Less technical, but I also get yubikey and duo 2factor push auth out of the box with Vaultwarden! (Open source rust implementation of Bitwarden)

Is it dangerous to host sites like this? I love making tools like this but worry about the repercussions
Re:Ask HN: What do I do about LastPass and how do I switch? on Thursday December 29, 2022 @12:49AM (#34169949)
Switched to self-hosted Bitwarden on my own domain behind a VPN. Everything on disk is encrypted.
Re:Ask HN: How would you spend a $2000 technology stipend? on Thursday December 29, 2022 @12:42AM (#34169906)
Yes. vscode can be self hosted and accessible over http and run in a Docker container. You can ssh tunnel or port forward it

Ask HN: Tricks to enjoy your job more?

I love to code, but the pressure of work makes me dwindle both physically and mentally. After lots of conscious effort, I’m back in a good physical and mental state trying to not let work take me down this year. What tips would you give to someone to avoid getting drained by work and politics/human emotions?

Re:Ask HN: 90s kids happily less connected? on Tuesday December 27, 2022 @11:03AM (#34149812)
I left Facebook 8 years ago, but have been in and out of sites like Reddit, HN, trash news and the like. I’ve gotten rid of my smartphone on and off a few times.

I’m 27 and as I get older, I become much more cognizant of how I both spend my time and sources of my knowledge consumption.

I’ve since deleted Reddit and primarily only keep in contact with people via iMessage/post cards/phone calls or in person events.

I’ve been actively monitoring energy levels through the weeks and realize that limiting my screen time and sedentary time to 4 hours a day is key. A simple hack I’ve learned to build the habit is:

- Don’t have phone in bedroom at night

- Read the same time every day for 30 minutes minimum

- take pleasure in boredom

- exercise even if you don’t want to (and your body isn’t exhausted from excess exercise). I like to oscillate between activities like surfing, yoga, running and walking to keep exercise always interesting.

If you need some research backed knowledge on easing on the dopamine, check out Dopamine Nation and Deep Work. Both solid books that can help shift your perspective. For people needing more energy in their life, I highly recommend Why We Sleep

Based on what data?
Re:Ask HN: Host a website from a living room in 2022? on Tuesday December 20, 2022 @08:35AM (#34065632)
Is it public? If you host a high traffic site from residential ISP connection, your account could get banned.

Regardless, I would host an NGINX proxy in front of some docker containers. It’s the easiest and classic way to front apps with custom domains very very easily. Traefik is also very nice and fast (Go based) reverse proxy.

If it’s purely for personal use, then check Cloudflared to tunnel into your network and access it like a VPN.

Again, if it’s Public be weary of DDOS attacks, port scans, etc. Personally I wouldn’t self-host a public web app from my house and instead would use a 4/mo VPS from Hetzner

Re:Ask HN: Almost 32, should I go back to University? on Sunday December 18, 2022 @12:37AM (#34035335)
Coding is everywhere. Lean into your business skills and get a business analytics job. I feel with a good portfolio and story with a lot of studying, that would be a good path.
Re:Ask HN: How to manage our digital assets (photos etc.) on Sunday December 18, 2022 @12:32AM (#34035316)
Self host nextcloud on a VPS with an external storage like Hetzner storage box and run redundant backups with backblaze

Udemy Business is overpriced for sure, but nice alternative to Pluralsight
Re:Ask HN: Is there evidence that layoffs work? on Saturday December 17, 2022 @11:33PM (#34035078)
I believe the question is around layoffs being beneficial or detrimental. For example, let’s say you have a 6 person company and layoffs affect 50% of the staff. Now you’re down to 3 people. Is that beneficial or detrimental? Now 3 people need to do the work for 6.

At a large scale, maybe some companies over hire, so it cuts the waste and the amortized results are better financially. However, for others (Twitter?, tbd) when you mass cut a ton of talent, innovation dwindles, morale sinks, time to learn and pick up old projects increases. Layoffs can hurt companies financially much harder, but it may not be immediate. It may be the demise of the company in 1-3 years due to all the other complex variables at play

Ask HN: Habits that have lasted the entire year?

In a time of New Years resolutions, I like to bring up a question that reflects on not 2023 goals, but the goals you set in 2021 for the 2022 year. For those who stuck with them consistently the entire year, what are some mantras, tips or mottos for those entering 2023 with a “fresh slate”? What do you do to stay consistent despite family issues, work deadlines, sleep deprivation and general...

Re:Ask HN: Similar Books like “Raytracing in one Weekend” on Friday December 16, 2022 @07:04PM (#34022419)
FWIW this book is great. It took me a couple months of immense dedication to finish everything from the first course.
Re:Ask HN: Similar Books like “Raytracing in one Weekend” on Friday December 16, 2022 @07:03PM (#34022412)
Nice review of Thorstens book. I read your book when I graduated college around 2018 and was unfulfilled at work. It was a lot of fun and I distinctly remember sitting in a coffee shop for hours reading through it and debugging my code.

Unsurprisingly my family asked what I wanted for Christmas and I put both your book and Thorstens on my list to reread .

Nice this is cool!

Check out Lemmy. The creator recently released a PhpBB styled version rewritten in Rust, but he has another version too

Re:Ask HN: What Books helped you sharpen your brains? on Thursday December 08, 2022 @01:14AM (#33904787)
This is asked pretty often. I think I’d say the act of reading books consistently and reflecting on the ideas as a habit is what makes you smarter, not just a single book. Fiction and nonfiction alike.

But to be less pedantic and answer your question. Deep work and why we sleep are both amazing books. They contribute to making you smarter by improving aspects of your life
