Re:SharknAT&To: Vulnerabilities in AT&T U-verse modems on Monday September 04, 2017 @01:39PM (#15169672)
80,8443 not open on the external IP are they? Hopefully only internal unless you're OK with that.
Re:SharknAT&To: Vulnerabilities in AT&T U-verse modems on Monday September 04, 2017 @01:31PM (#15169623)
Has anyone with this modem in the wild actually confirmed this update was pushed to them and if so is ssh listening on their public IP? So far in the article comments (haven't looked thru HN comments yet), those having this modem have verified that ssh is not listening.
I haven't tried the Spectrum TV streaming service. I'm recently on the one month DTVN trial, and I've actually been quite happy with the mix of channels offered by DirecTV Now, whilst no DVR, and half way decent on demand (although not even close to the on demand provided by the corresponding individual channel TVEverywhere app). It offers ESPN1/2, all the Viacom channels, a good news lineup, OK locals (depending on your region) and a pretty good lineup for the younger kids (Disney Jr, Nick Jr etc), plus essentials like AMC, AE, TNT, et al, all on their entry level $35 plan. The quality of picture and streaming consistency has been excellent on the Roku 3 app, and haven't noticed any buffering problems aside from the normal few seconds when you load a channel. You can access the app away from home (excepting locals if out of region), and you can use DirecTV Now as authentication for any TVEverywhere channel app for which is included in your plan. HBO (or Cinemax) is $5/mo, and you get access to HBO Go with that. I don't have any affiliation with DirecTV Now, I just think it's gotten kind of a bad wrap with the likely premature rollout of the service where most everyone complained of near useless functionality and constant buffering etc. I just haven't seen any of that. Yes there is no DVR, and the UI leaves a lot to be desired and lacks polish, but I think it's the best bang for your buck for a TV service for the entire family, where everyone gets most of what they want, for a very competitive price point.
Re:GitHub was down on Monday July 31, 2017 @03:24PM (#14895125)
Do these general Github outages affect GH Pages as well, or is that service portion segmented to some degree?
When will the Windows build be available again?

Didn't realize Linux supported LPAR?
They are? Haven't they been pushing Skype for Business pretty hard, considering also that they have supplanted Communicator/Lync with it as well?
Re:Ask HN: Package and sell self-hosted web-app? on Sunday July 16, 2017 @11:57AM (#14782513)
VM images are common. vmdk, qcow, etc. Check out Bitnami and the variety of different appliances/images they offer for most of the apps/services that they offer. That should help in figuring out how to package it up...
These kind of generalizations are entirely humorous. Whether remote or on-site works better for someone is entirely situational, and mostly depends on the personality/disposition of the person. For many many people, remote just doesn't work for them for many reasons, and on-site is where they may thrive. Ridiculousness.

Was wondering if someone was going to try to do chat with this... Or how about just a persistent blog from one updating file?

Looks like you've got port 22 open to the world on that domain. Assuming you've got some good security options on that ssh service.
Article does mention the child is 2 years old; not sure if that changes the scope of their refund policy/responsibility. However, I would imagine that if this mother wanted to hold the child in her lap for the duration of the do flight, she presumably would not have purchased an extra $1000 ticket. I imagine they'll for sure give her a full refund and then some after the media flack, whilst still making it seem like their actions were acceptable.
"We are providing compensation as a goodwill gesture."

As a "goodwill" gesture?? This makes it sound like she is lucky they might be providing any sort of compensation at all to her. Seems to me that she is due a full refund, since her son was not able to use the seat that she paid for. I don't think the article reveals the age of the child, as I think that would provide some bearing as to the airline's responsibility to provide full refund or not? Once again, airlines (or is it just United) making boneheaded decisions.

Didn't know about this. Very cool, thanks.
I am as well too still. @steevenwee any word on how long it typically takes?
Re:Cairo Shell on Saturday May 06, 2017 @08:14PM (#14283065)
Windows replacement shells are a thing (usually, in essence, just an explorer.exe replacement), which is what this is. They were extremely popular in the 2000 decade, but believe the current state of alternative shells has stalled quite a bit in general.
Yeah, if you could support custom domains, I'd definitely use this. Also, looks like we could self-host from your github code? By the way, you've come up with quite a brilliant, simple, and efficient idea.
Re:TINY: VNC for DOS on Tuesday January 10, 2017 @01:47PM (#13367654)
BTW, the Josh who wrote this (Josh Levine), also wrote The Island Trading system (which ran on DOS I believe). Pretty brilliant guy; he was a subject of a very good book (IMO) called Dark Pools. Not sure if he's still doing this or not, but of your name is Josh xyz, he'll delegate xyz.josh.com to you (if not already reserved).
How does Milky Chance fit into this conversation?

Does there exist an enterprise grade server/webui solution based on a keepass db? We are looking for an enterprise password manager solution that does not need all the ldap/ad integration bells/whistles (although we may explore ldap integration with the tool in the future). So I was thinking why not just use keepass. And by enterprise grade I guess I really mean it needs to be a multi user solution, but everyone would be working from the same pw db..
Re:dd built-in progress introduced in coreutils 8.24 on Sunday January 10, 2016 @11:41PM (#10878845)
ddrescue also shows progress by default. Not sure if it has a comparable feature-set as dcfldd, but for data rescue/forensics, it definitely does the trick, and seems to be much more actively maintained.

Along with all the other suggestions fir hosting, Red Hat Openshift has free tier that you can pretty easily set up a website with as well.

ddrescue has built in progress reporting, plus you don't have to be bothered with if= and of=

Journey? Might be more like a Ghost alternative, but in the ballpark. https://kabukky.github.io/journey/
He is right about a couple of things, though he does not seem to have much of a grasp about buildings in general.

He is right that sills (whatever material they are made of) should always protrude. I agree that the 1970's and 80's will probably be considered the low point in building (and were certainly the low point in automobile quality).

He apparently doesn't understand that the brick header in the older building is actually weight-bearing while the one in the newer building is a veneer covering a poured-concrete structural header.

He misses the main point: the older building is much better quality because it cost much more in relative terms. Buildings, like most of our modern products have declined in quality because we don't spend as much on them. But we have far more stuff - buildings and everything else.
