One factor that influenced this was the lack of what we consider "nerd culture" in the Soviet Union. To be a nerd, you had to study science. There was no other way. No comic books, no movies. So yeah, math it is.
Nest is a disaster. Same with their fire alarms. I spent a small fortune buying those, just to rip them out and dump into garbage. Google hardware - never again.

Show HN: Minute of Fame – own one minute of the day, it airs live every day

https://minuteoffame.lol

Hello HN, I'm Leo, I built Minute of Fame as a weekend-size project, a joke that got out of hands. Each day has 1440 minutes in it. Each one of them have an owner. When your minute comes around, your profile goes live on the dial for 60 seconds, and whoever is watching can react and wave. Then the next owner takes over. And so on.Anyone can watch. Open minutes start at $5. If you want to buy a...

> We form an emotional impression first, then we build a belief around it, and then we go looking for facts that support it. This is my theory as to why we’re so divided in this country.

While this is true, the reason we are much more divided country than in the past is that today's tech actively amplifies this. You can always find the news to support your belief, and social networks are tuned to reinforce it. This is a vicious circle - the more we are divided, the more division is propageted.

Razom is awesome. Donated to them for many years, went to their events. 100% recommended.
Did his camera track them?
There is no contradiction between "most people do X" and "anyone can do whatever they decide".
It's all quite true. What is surprising though, that the SAME people who are very outspoken in criticizing Musk are driving Teslas. First, they would put some lame stickers to make the whole thing seem like a joke, now they don't even care to do that. It's almost like their self-proclaimed virtue ends where (tiny) financial pain begins.
You know what's funny? I live in a very progressive town. Everyone is pissed at Elon. Everyone drives Teslas. And not old one, clearly tons of them were purchased after he went "bad". Clearly people's principles are contingent on the car sale discounts.

I like how they carry posters from Matrix, Terminator, etc. They know the difference between fantasy and real life, right?

Show HN: OpenBot, open source framework similar to Grok Bot

https://github.com/regnull/openbot

I think the path Grok Bot took is absolutely the right one, the collaborating bots model is easy to understand and it maps to workflows naturally. However, Grok Bot is closed source and quite expensive (I ran out of tokens on Ultra tier), so I've decided to roll out my own: https://github.com/regnull/openbot.Same idea, you have collaborating bots that can be configured in any way you like. It...

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Monday September 14, 2026 @09:01PM (#49706407)
I’m working on an open source platform similar to Grok Bot: https://github.com/regnull/openbot

Think of it as a synthesis of AI bots and actor model. For now I have a self hosted version where you can run a bunch of bots talking to each other.

Great idea, but buggy. My lecture started mid-sentence and ended abruptly (Kalman filter). Looking forward to when you guys get it working well. Also, I'm curious if the lecture description language is public.
You can also use GPS as time source
How is it different from smashing your phone on the floor and destroying it when asked to unlock? Just because it's a code that wipes it makes no difference. I'm not saying the agents were right to ask for it, but it seems like if you feel that your rights are violated you should refuse to unlock the phone, not destroy the content in front of them.
Re:AI companies are shredding rare books on Monday July 27, 2026 @10:01AM (#49069845)
The source for this is "I've heard it from some guy". Before we freak out, perhaps make sure it's actually happening?

"This is an app the land thieves of the Zionist entity force Palestinians to install on their phones as part of their illegal apartheid permit system."

The article seems to be a little one-sided, perhaps?

It's either terrible planning or the most persuasive presentation they’ve ever given.
Re:Jobs and Software Is Fucked on Monday June 22, 2026 @05:15PM (#48636312)
If you don't have a full time job for a year, why don't you start a software business on your own? It's hard to succeed, but, successful or now, you will have something to show people and something that you are passionate to talk about. It will give you a new way to connect to people, and quite likely will help you to get hired. And who knows, maybe you will succeed.
Re:Building an HTML-first site doubled our users overnight on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @11:30AM (#48477878)

I don't want to be that guy, but the title is misleading. The number of users completing the form doubled.

After I tried and failed to find any decent QR code generators online, I made one: https://www.cutearr.com/

Runs entirely in the browser, no tracking, no analytics, no ads.

Unsubscribe? And then miss out on all that excellent "There is another thing you should be worried about" content?
So three quarters are on the way up? Doesn't sound too bad.
Re:You can no longer Google the word 'disregard' on Friday May 22, 2026 @02:02PM (#48239238)
Googling "disregard" (in quotes) also works.
Re:You can no longer Google the word 'disregard' on Friday May 22, 2026 @02:00PM (#48239212)
You can easily Google "disregard definition", actually this is the first auto-prompted item. I do realize it doesn't make the same catchy headline.
It's not just AI. It's AI on top of society discontent that existed for a long time, but accelerated recently. The big underlying problem is, since at least 1970s every subsequent generation had to work harder to afford the same lifestyle as their parents. For a few decades it was balanced by the increasing women's participation in the workforce. But then, since 2008, we got banking crisis, both political parties focusing on outrage, pandemic, great resignation, generation of workers lost due to the lack of in-person contact, and now AI.
Re:I don't think AI will make your processes go faster on Sunday May 17, 2026 @10:38AM (#48169324)
You know, AI could help you to produce better-looking charts.
People can still behave honorably despite all this. It's easy (and wrong) to justify someone's dishonorable behavior by pointing to the leaders.
