Re:Ask HN: Is your prompt your moat? on Monday May 15, 2023 @04:29AM (#35945239)
I think the prompt does add value, but its about wrapping the LLM + Prompt into a journey that works well for the intended use case. I think the most elegant implementation so far of this is: - notionai - blenderGPT

Both are embedded right where you need them, and they are tuned to provide great results. Another ChatGPT with a better prompt probably isn't much of a moat.

I think the idea behind agents is to have them a bit less constrained. If you can force input/output with better prompts that might help. Or if you can reduce the temperature of the underlying LLM generation, that could make it a bit more deterministic.

Or switch to using a chain.

Re:Should developer assistant be a thing? on Sunday May 16, 2021 @05:39AM (#27172472)
I think this is a great idea.

How would day 1 look for the dev assistant? and how mature would a dev team need to be to incorporate someone with relatively low experience into their environment? psql drop db --prod?

Re:Ask HN: Will Remote Start to Affect Tech Salaries? on Tuesday May 12, 2020 @03:58AM (#23151549)
Agreed, I think that the EU can look at any talent in their timezone (Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Belarus, Hungary etc.) https://techbeacon.com/app-dev-testing/top-12-international-... South Africa has the biggest bang for your buck, even for local jobs, having an international job and living in SA would be a great combo.

Following this, what did the great engineering manager do? Also, what are some of the traits of the bad managers?

Thanks!

I have read 37Signals (Basecamp's) employee handbook, and it sounds like a great place to work, and their tech works really well!

How will you collect and deliver? Are you going to rely on another service provider? Or are you going to have mobile repair units?
Will you offer a "repair warranty" on your services?
By not chasing unicorns for themselves. If a founder starts a company looking only for a billion dollar valuation to retire rich and young, they only increase the inequality divide.

Rather, founder should be seeking to start companies that give opportunity to their employees to be empowered. Taking in talent from different sources (not only ivy league) and developing the skills needed for their company.

Another practical way is perhaps to create (insert buzzword here) that will open up learning of important life skills to the large swaths of under/unemployed/employable people. Grit, resilience, creativity etc.

We are in large debt repay cycle, as Ray Dalio describes it, so companies have to be bootstrapped and built with minimum risks. Empowering a generation to become life long learners is perhaps the best thing we can do as engineers. Something else to look at is environmental stability (ie safe communities, stable households etc.)

Ask HN: What API do you wish existed?

You pass me four colors and I return a length? You pass me four songs and I return most frequently used words? You pass me three names and I return the meanings of them? You pass me three wedding registry items and I return links to all online shops that you can purchase them from?I find that I need better metadata on some of my data points and would love some external API's that would provide...
