i wrote this on another thread last night:

disclaimer: TechStar alum from NYC Winter '11 here... while the finished product that Bloomberg aired is not the most amazing piece of journalism i've ever seen, i don't think TechStars is to blame for that. the TechStars ethos is to be open and encourage entrepreneurship. to this end, TechStars asked us if we were ok with putting ourselves out there to the world and we all agreed to it before the program started. at the end of the day, 10/11 companies got funded, a few are driving great revenues already and all are on track to build great companies... it's hard to argue with that. and if anyone out there learns from what we went through on the show, or is excited by startups or encouraged to go start/join a startup... then the show is a success.

Re:TechStars, Lies & Videotape on Thursday October 20, 2011 @02:42PM (#3136238)
never said 'the ends justify the means'

while i agree that the show is not all-inclusive of the complexity of startups, i think it's funny how much noise is made about the show itself, when the good news is people are excited about startups enough to 1. make a show and 2. to watch it

some of us are going to succeed and some of us are going to fail... some publicly, some not so publicly

TechStars chose, and we agreed, to doing this in the public eye

yes. sorry

awesome stuff - i always see events i MAY go to, but don't necessarily want to put it on my calendar. looks like this will do the trick
i look up all technical candidates on Github... only problem is some people have multiple online identities making it hard to find them on LinkedIn & Github & at their blog etc...
agree - i google almost every professional i come in contact with and hate when i can't find the right person

with an input like "pervious likes," you could really know what someone likes

;)

i'm reminded of this every time i fire up Pandora on my iPhone and it hits me with that stupid Livingsocial ad or interrupts the music with bad ads

gotta wonder if they don't purposefully keep their ads lame so people are encouraged to upgrade more

Re:Techstars or a Harvard MBA? on Thursday July 14, 2011 @05:39PM (#2765266)
fair enough

i think all programs/institutions etc are what you make of them

there are students who go to Ivy Leagues and soak it up and there are others who f* it up

likewise, there are startups who learn a ton and excel in an accelerator and there are others who flounder

also, i think Jobs will tackle TV just because it is so challenging.

he wants to put a dent in the universe... what better way than revolutionizing TV/computing?

one less device = simplicity

and brand is just so strong

Re:Apple's TV Strategy on Thursday July 14, 2011 @04:55PM (#2765059)
if/when Apple makes a TV, there will definitely be an app store with it.
Re:Apple's TV Strategy on Thursday July 14, 2011 @04:49PM (#2765028)
my issue with your point here is that i think you're stuck with the concept of what a TV is now, when Apple has the potential to completely redefine the concept of what a "TV" is or should be...

"Smart TV's" have the potential to cannibalize some of the PC market, as all of our data moves to the cloud and all we need is a good interface to compute...

Apple didn't make a tablet, they made an iPad. they won't make a TV, they'll make an iTV and differentiate themselves entirely.

probably true, though the learning is what's important anyway.
Re:Techstars or a Harvard MBA? on Thursday July 14, 2011 @03:17PM (#2764560)
curious - are you a TechStars alum?
Re:Apple's TV Strategy on Thursday July 14, 2011 @03:11PM (#2764535)
yeah... Dixon is dead on.

leave it to the naysayers to say "it's impossible."

Jobs will dominate and prove them wrong.

exactly what i've been looking for.

awesome stuff Tal.

Re:ASK HN: Thank you messages are lost in the cloud? on Wednesday June 08, 2011 @12:00AM (#2631972)
sounds pretty good

i like that it's based around 'karma' in some sense

not sure where it goes or the best way to get adoption, but generally feel that internet denizens are pretty 'thankful' people (at least here in NYC) and it could be worthwhile regardless of biz opps. my $.02
