They could choose to offer search without the AI answer but have chosen not to. To be clear I might have made the same choice as them. But let's be clear
You bring up a very good point. Not only do lots of people buy inferior products, lots of people employ inferior intelligences
This comes on top of other reporting that shows that real wages have been falling behind the inflation rate meaning people feel they are able to afford a more basic lifestyle than they could in the past otherwise all else being equal. That's the general zeitgeist and backdrop and this data seems to sort of complement that as a "oh that makes sense". The main issue is that inflation is now Rising higher than GDP growth
The thing is there's almost always an open source option in every category.. this just adds more noise and confusion amongst those which potentially benefits the proprietary winner
Or going a slightly different direction, every revolution is ultimately a conflict between elites. Pissed off elites lead to revolution.
Still this broader effort looks more like performance art since the people who decide what SaaS to use are on the other side of this devide

I think that's an unnecessarily pessimistic take. The way I look at it the industry did not wake up to how big this was until Q4 and so it makes sense that you would see astronomical growth in q1 and Q2 as everybody woke up and started adopting. Seeing the growth Taper down to a 4.5x annualized rate which to your point will only continue to taper but it's still mind-boggling at this scale ... you just don't have anything else like this in the economy. This is like hyperscaler Revenue scale achieved in 15 years being achieved five times as quickly. At this rate Anthropic will exceed AWS Revenue within a year
Well in traditional banking you essentially have the ability to reverse
This incident brought the hugging face brand name into regular people discourse. I'm sure they loved it
I have to say I'm surprised GrubHub is so small.. I thought they were basically a clear number two
It's interesting it's not ahead of Claude on the coding benchmark right?
Incredible back story here if I can trust Gemini on this as that dates back to over 10 years ago when Musk accused Larry Page of being too obsessed with bringing about AI and hence co-founds OpenAI... the irony of course being that OpenAI raced ahead while Google has been conservative
And as a reminder to folks he's the writer of (the newer era) Westworld which if you haven't seen the full first season really turns into an incredible mind bender
I think it's intentional for balancing a demand profile rather than spiking their massive user base onto a new model all at once
Wow thank you for this.
"If our world survives, the next great challenge to watch out for will come - you heard it here first - when the curves of research and development in artificial intelligence, molecular biology and robotics all converge. Oboy. It will be amazing and unpredictable, and even the biggest of brass, let us devoutly hope, are going to be caught flat-footed. It is certainly something for all good Luddites to look forward to if, God willing, we should live so long."
I just looked it up and Thomas Pynchon remains alive.... how wonderful.
Thank you for this
Have you looked at the difference between Q1 and Q2? There's a trend change where revenues have grown materially compared with costs
You're arguing the second quarter isn't representative of what they'll be able to sustain... that their revenue isn't durable? Let's see. But it's a profitable quarter
Democratization of information. I think it's a similar jump a pre-internet search to internet search...
Anthropic as of a few months ago.
Amazon owns a big chunk of Anthropic. Plus they benefit from the rise of open models. They're being prudent.
I love the idea of capturing radio from a far-off place momentarily on a drive at night. This is why I miss radio. The non-deterministic component of it could introduce you to the unexpected
Maybe a naive perspective but I honestly would have thought that a larger credit market on high quality debt would actually enable a larger credit market on low quality debt. In other words the former would effectively expand money supply more reliably and therefore enable creditors to also support more speculative bets. Admittedly if there are higher ROI speculative bets to go after then maybe those just get pushed down the priority line. But I'm surprised that they're in direct competition with the high quality stuff exactly.
The poverty of the Great Depression was put to use to great effect building so much of the infrastructure that we now rely on. It was bumpy that's true. But it's not accurate to imply that bread line work was the only growth areas then.
Interesting similar to the old King - Man + Woman = Queen it sure would be interesting if model minus Tiananmen Square protest equals "everywhere looks like France"
Thank you. That page definitely needs to define an esoteric term at the top
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian%E2%80%93American_Teleg... here's a great historical episode that few people are aware of attempting to cross Siberia with a telegraph line in the late 1800s. The Americans involved in the project were probably the first Americans to see that part of the world.
Also interesting is that ancestral relative of the Cold War era American Diplomat George Kennan of the same name was involved in the project. In fact it's the ancestors experience that likely led him to become a Russia expert and in turn define critical parts of American Cold War Doctrine
This reminds me that I absolutely love having a voice phone conversations in other words the old way. No video no battery drain simple high bandwidth voice to voice
It's not that simple. In a time of massive flux and shake up you have to be ready to jump to different kinds of roles in different kinds of organizations. Maybe you've been an enterprise and need to jump to a startup or the reverse... or maybe you've been in an internal only role and need to move into a customer facing role or any number of other possibilities. Admittedly one way of interpreting the need for evolving is that it could be exhausting so in that sense the author has a point but it's not as black and white as you imply. At any moment in time there are growth areas in the economy and growth teams within companies and there are atrophying or declining areas of the economy or teams within companies. These macrodynamics are just as important as who you happen to work for and what the tools du jour mean for your work. But they require you to be intentionalable about making changes
No one is giving them a 20T valuation. That's an order of magnitude larger than the market is currently targeting
