Re:The Electric Fence Stopped Working Years Ago on Friday August 15, 2025 @01:55PM (#44915450)
One of the best comments I’ve read on HN in quite a while. Good advice for us all.
Re:AI systems with 'unacceptable risk' are now banned in the EU on Tuesday February 04, 2025 @10:50AM (#42933933)
Would you consider GDPR a failure if businesses collected the maximum allowed under the law?
Re:Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option on Tuesday January 07, 2025 @10:15PM (#42630511)
The difference isn’t nearly that dramatic, but there are definitely savings to be had via the app.
I don’t know how this transaction went down, but it’s very likely they didn’t purchase the organization itself, but rather its assets. The surviving organization would then dispose of the resulting cash in a mission-oriented fashion and shutdown thereafter.
Re:Emacs standing alone on a Linux Kernel on Thursday April 20, 2023 @12:38PM (#35642592)
Absolutely genius.
Re: on Monday December 26, 2022 @03:46PM (#34141676)
I’d imagine many of the same considerations come into play when a structure straddles a state line in the US. I wonder how that’s handled?
Re:Did Insurance Fire Brigades let uninsured buildings burn? on Monday December 19, 2022 @01:17PM (#34055512)
I grew up in a poor, rural area of the US and can attest that it's true... if you didn't pay the fee (and affix the requisite metal sign below your mailbox) you were on your own in the event of a fire.

At that time and place, fire protection wasn't considered a public service unless you lived in town. I never heard anyone question the arrangement and there was little appetite in that era for the tax increase that would've been required to provide universal protection.

Re:FBI Child ID App on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @10:29AM (#32001547)
I remember that as well. Just assumed that the unstated reason was to assist in identifying deceased kids.
What happened when the customer encountered the same employee on a future visit?
Re:Sunsetting Atom on Wednesday June 08, 2022 @11:22AM (#31668698)
I’m not sure the term has ever been applied to Microsoft’s own products…
Re:Tether Withdrawals Top $10B on Tuesday May 24, 2022 @03:48PM (#31496743)
The bigger concern is whether there will be funds to process the next $10B of withdrawals.
Re:Running macOS in a Virtual Machine on Apple Silicon Macs on Saturday February 12, 2022 @07:51PM (#30317956)
There is a built-in feature, known as Application Guard, on Windows 10/11 that gives you exactly this out of the box, with minimal configuration. Biggest downside is that it only works with Edge.
Re:Whistleblower: Ubiquiti Breach “Catastrophic” on Tuesday March 30, 2021 @06:53PM (#26641527)
For their UniFi line, at least, you don't have to use their cloud controller. You can self-host.
Re:The Remarkable Number 1/89 (2004) on Thursday October 29, 2020 @11:24AM (#24931504)
To me, the fact that you’re in an environment where knowing the digits of x/7 is appreciated is the most-impressive thing of all!
Re:iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro on Tuesday October 13, 2020 @11:52PM (#24772952)
The upper trim levels of the ‘21 Honda Accord have it.
Windows for ARM can already run 32-bit x86 executables. They’re working to bring similar support for 64-bit software.
Re:Everything I Know About SSDs on Wednesday January 15, 2020 @10:36PM (#22061471)
They still support it, it’s just not the default any longer for drives that report the capability.
The code’s been released under the GPL, so seems unlikely to be an issue of hoarding.
Re:What is Chrome’s SameSite cookie update? on Saturday January 04, 2020 @11:28AM (#21955737)
As I understand it, the change makes it easier to identify tracking cookies.
Re:Exploiting Intel’s Management Engine on Friday November 15, 2019 @02:01PM (#21547656)
I’m confused... other comments reference ME as the root-of-trust for the system, the chip that brings the CPU out of reset. How can a system be operational without that functionality?
Re:2020 OS Migration on Saturday October 19, 2019 @02:14PM (#21299858)
I think they’re trying to get around this by explicitly saying there will be no migration path, but it’ll be interesting to see whether they actually get away with that.
Recent iPhone models can handle multiple SIMs, but only one physical SIM card. The rest have to be eSIMs.
Re:New SIM attacks de-mystified, protection tools now available on Monday September 30, 2019 @08:26PM (#21120918)
What’s even scarier is the premise of your comment: "Any decent customer service operation will fall prey to social engineering."

And what's unfortunate is that you're probably right!

Re:OpenBSD was right to disable hyperthreading [video] on Tuesday September 03, 2019 @11:36AM (#20867579)
This is, at least in part, a result of MINIX using a highly permissive license. It’s easier to use an open source OS in relative secrecy if you aren’t required to release your modifications. And an organization with deep technical expertise like Intel would not likely need much assistance from the community for their implementation.
How is the parent trying to impose anything on you? By what mechanism would they be able to do so?
Re:Moving to IPv6 (2002) on Thursday July 25, 2019 @11:44PM (#20532197)
My understanding is that residential usage of IPv6 actually outpaces Enterprise adoption in the US.
I'm not a subject matter expert, but a Google Voice number can be used to receive texts and is protected by the relatively robust security of your Google account.
Reading the original source with an ad blocker installed may not be providing as much support as you imagine.
Re:GNU ed 1.15 on Friday January 04, 2019 @02:20PM (#18826864)
It's going strong enough to justify someone publishing a book on it [1] just last year.
