red-iron-pine
Boise, Portland, rural Kentucky, Central PA, one dude in Michigan, etc.
great deal until (most of them) lost their jobs or had spouses that lost jobs.
a few ran into culture shock they couldn't get past. my friends in Idaho got a shock, lol.
Kentucky dude is still there, tho. visited him, PITA to get there. great property, and thankfully he can still pull remote gigs.
what's your (broadly you I mean) threat model?
I'm not worried about the NSA or Mossad, I'm mostly worried about Google or Yandex or whoever. I don't do anything especially illegal, and just staying off the radar is mostly enough. I've got forreal PGP if I need it, got a buncha keys on the MIT keyring, etc.
Just someone who takes security and privacy seriously and is not a data reseller like the 'goog or MS. Problem is they have shown they don't take it seriously.
specifics are not relevant in many cases. capitalism does not care.
it's a complete mis-read of literally everything they have to offer, the raison d'être for using Proton.
now I gotta wonder what other stupid bullshit is this idiot going to champion?
will hold my breath to see if the company course-corrects and drops him. I chose Proton over Tuta years ago, paid for the lifetime membership, but will revisit that this week...
you either pay out of pocket or you pay with data but there is no free lunch.
as a current Proton customer I'm going to start looking for alternatives.
FWIW I am the latter, and sold last week while it was still positive.
it's gonna get real ugly soon...
prostitues, esp. fancy government ones, only have to work 2 hours a day, on their back. low chance of dying. and getting laid, albeit maybe not your ideal partner.
likewise you're not going to be using Automatic Train Control in yards, sidings, or terminals, and you may need to get up to speed sometimes to move across a big yard.
manual mode lets the conductors and traffic controllers make those calls.
and it's "not something they need to remember" -- it's 40 kph or whatever the track is authorized for under ATC.
I don't need cutting edge features, I need a service that won't snoop on my shit and is otherwise reliable and trustworthy.
features like Proton Calendar and VPN make sense but again these aren't new concepts and don't require vibe coding or "move fast break things"
we're transitioning to Juniper and don't feel bad about it
the signs were there for a while but this ain't helping. not jumping ship today, but that's mostly logistical -- but will start looking for other options.
like i do security and use AI daily -- and i am fully aware of what its good for and not good for. there still need to be engineers in the loop, and if it's just AI then i'm not a Proton customer I'm a [Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini/etc] customer.
the big difference is that Valve is private and generally delivers.
what do you expect Valve to do about AI cloning? sue OpenAI?
there has always been a lot of shit, but most of it was at the margins, and you could easily find the real flagship games.
now the slop is never ending and competes on the front page against real titles
easy to find one -- you'll know if it's your jam and worth buying after a few minutes
but all the code would be free.
or are they warehouse and package monkeys and logistics?
800k warehouse workers doesn't mean shit w/r/t AI development
a lot of his "burn it down, fuck em" attitude stems from that.
he is, however, completely and utterly narcissistic and greedy, and smart rich people are able to play him like a fiddle.
the KGB picked up on that in, like, the 80's, after Ivana's dad -- an informant for the Czechoslovakian secret police -- passed on details of their relationship to the Czech internal security
they know. Facebook, Tiktok, Twitter -- it's not hard to figure out who and how this is happening.
it's like how Twitter goofed and made accounts show the country they were posting from. Turns out most of the Real American Patriot influencers were posting from India. Twitter immediately freaked out and ended that visibility.
They know. They're the problem.
margins and market incentives aren't there for small vehicles. same reason that things like clothes are bifurcated into either bottom-barrel fast-fashion or $1000 button ups.
seriously impacted my view and did change my car selection (but not to a Rav4, to a Toyota Sienna minivan)
