Re:Elon Musk Wades Deeper into Antisemitic Propaganda on Saturday September 02, 2023 @11:44AM (#37362544)
I think the article is pretty clear that he sees the ADL as an entity that engages in extortion and free speech suppression.

i'm saying that it is all in the service of helping the Israeli government finish their genocide campaign.

Cars should be banned.

Robot cars, too.

Re:Elon Musk Wades Deeper into Antisemitic Propaganda on Saturday September 02, 2023 @11:28AM (#37362371)
ADL is a PR firm focused on helping Israel destroy what's left of the Palestinian people and culture and take over their remaining land.

They also chime in occasionally on anti Jewish and other racist matters.

So, Musk partially correct? Yuck.

Re:Ask HN: Did the CAPM certification help you land a job? on Monday August 28, 2023 @03:45PM (#37299478)
thanks, i started looking at some of the material and i have a hard time believing that it's... ummm.... valid content?

it just kind of seems made up.

like... management leads by relational power, whereas leadership leads by authority power.

what is that?

and these are the terms and categories -- which are words in the English language -- affect these types of deliverable, but if you know English pretty well, that knowledge is going to get in the way of passing this exam -- because we're just arbitrarily making up words and phrases and concepts and lumping them together.

the nomenclature is not completely outlandish, necessarily, but it definitely seems suspect -- from my 15 minutes of review.

i guess i believe that there _is_ a science of project management and that is has valid principles that are actually useful in carrying out serious projects, but.... is this it?

like, _this_ wacky set of arbitrary words and phrases is what guides projects in America and/or the world?

Ask HN: Did the CAPM certification help you land a job?

CAPM stands for Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM).It is done by the Project Management Institute (PMI) -- the same folks who do the PMP certification, the PMP-ACP (Agile) cert, etc.The CAPM cert does not have the 'X hours/days/years of Project Management experience' work requirement.Instead, it has some minimum project managment education experience requirement -- something like...

Re:You're Not Going to Make It on Friday August 25, 2023 @11:46AM (#37263032)
i like some of the message and writing style but hate the changing title.
i think the rich will be insulated to a certain extent, but the weather is already making most of the world, including much of the rich, miserable.

i mean, the solution to rich kids is going to be like... don't go outside for the next three months.

if you're a rich adult, you can fly north for the summer, but you'll have to go to.... somewhere where it's not blazing hot in the summer? where is that?

and then you'll be breathing heavy wildfire smoke?

Did y'all hear that? There's a dev skills crisis.

The crisis is that developers won't work for free.

that's US public policy - fight everything good (democracy) until it becomes clear that we've lost the fight, then at the last moment switch our public stance and say we were for it the whole time - we just wanted some tweaks.

privately, we oppose everything good all the time, from beginning to end -- only the public stance changes.

i'm sure that's the same for Apple and every other big tech firm, every tech firm, every firm.

shorter dropbox: how dare people believe what we say. they're criminal and 'abusive'.

Ask HN: Should we start primarily reporting Heat Index instead of other stuff?

The other stuff might be temperature, relative humidity, sun, wind, etc. With more people suffering and dying from direct heat-related global warming conditions, I feel like we need a simpler way to talk about whether or not it is safe for people to go outside, for how long, etc., and I feel like the current reporting regime does not accomplish that.

Ask HN: Possible to go/live underground to cool off?

I remember 40 years ago or so, underground or partially-underground houses were a thing - at least where I was occasionally in Pottsville (??), Pennsylvania.I don't really remember why it was a thing, but I think I remember that it was because having a house underground-ish -- say, with just one face of the house exposed -- kept the house at earth temperature, which was generally a good thing...

Re:Ask HN: With the 'Rona exploding, should RTO be canceled? on Thursday August 17, 2023 @06:11PM (#37168884)
It does seem like covid is exploding at the moment, so I'll be interested to see what the RTO companies do, if anything.
Re:Ask HN: Getting Rid of the Founder? on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @10:31PM (#37156462)
Why is the autocrat of our company, the CEO, acting like... an autocrat/CEO?

Hmmmmm.

I agree with other commenter - polish up your resume.

You can try to have a chat with them, but they'll hate you and you might get fired.

You can go to the investors, but they'll hate you and you might get fired.

You can send an anonymouse letter to ceo and/or investors and try not to get outed but seeing as how you're brave enough to post here you'll prob be first fired.

I don't think your situation is unique at all.

You can always quit, into another company or not.

If I'm your bestie, I'm saying, don't do shit. Let dictator run it into the ground. Amazingly, they might not. AI is so hot, if you got funding, you might be lucky enough to stick around.

Companies can survive and thrive with even a seemingly-catastrophic amount of mismanagement and chaos -- including nepotism and outright criminal activity.

KGTC keep getting them checks. save your money. start interviewing lightly. try to make it to the point the CEO either runs the company into the ground, or they are pushed out by the investors.

Re:Ask HN: Startup ideas that you'll never do? on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @10:10PM (#37156313)
A startup to build bike lanes, and other tech/policies that allow people to bike.

This would be similar to the functions provided by orgs like https://sfbike.org/ but we'd be for-profit and have billions in funding.

Re:The tech job recession is over on Wednesday August 16, 2023 @12:42PM (#37149734)
i've been out for almost a year now. i'll decide when it's over. but thank you, business lobby, for confirming the tech recession is still in full swing.
to me, an argument i haven't heard yet is human dignity.

it's tough to hold onto it (as a human) when you're being threatened and/or injured/maimed/killed by robots.

the idea of yelling at a robot and having it ignore you is pretty fucked up, especially if it's squeezing your coworker to death, or running a dog (or human) over, etc.

Re:Why is DNS still hard to learn? on Saturday July 29, 2023 @12:03AM (#36916766)
i had hella trouble with it, but not just it - all the related topics - reverse dns/proxy setups, 10 ways to configure it/them, cname flattening and the 15 ways to configure that, the 15 ways you can do it with cloudflare or not, dis/advantages of all those setups/combinations/permutations, etc.

doubt a course could teach me half of what i would need to know in some reasonable amount of time - say, two or three months.

but open to the idea.

Re:Xeriscaping on Tuesday July 25, 2023 @10:39PM (#36872495)
does xeriscaping keep your yard hotter (heat island effect stuff) than it would be if it was natural grass?

Re:Ask HN: Who is the biggest carbon polluter? on Tuesday July 18, 2023 @12:56AM (#36767957)
i can't make heads or tails of that graph.

i was hoping to get something that would tell us like...who has emitted the most carbon?

and maybe who is emitting the most carbon on an annual basis today?

and then, both of those measures adjusted to be sum total, regardless of population size.

and then maybe separate out the small countries that are really just owned by other countries, so can't set their own policies.

There is no audio on that one, but it seems to show at least some of the same questions I got.

Indeed calls them 'Work Style' tests I think, and they seem to be reserved for low-age/hourly positions like retail, etc.

I'm curious what the theory is behind them. Like, if you choose answer mix 'x', then maybe it indicates that you have a more passive personality, thus you will be more likely to stay in the position longer?

Or maybe they're just collecting any data they can and trying to find patterns in it later?

The Times' sports journalism is/was the ish.

It was basically the best reporting you could find on sports, which i guess makes sense.

One of the things i liked about it was that it was actually detached, somewhat objective -- the Athletic has said they are PR for the teams they cover -- that's not me saying it, that's them.

Whenever i stumble on an Athletic article, i'll be reading it and then be like...wait, this sucks, this must be from the Athletic, then maybe grudingly finish it.

If i was a paying subscriber i'd be unhappy about this.

sports is not just sports. welp.

reminds me of corey doctorow's use of the term enshittification.

different title now ("Amazon has 5,000+ Rivian EV delivery vans on the road"), but these numbers seem... infinitesimally small.

maybe it's a bigger deal because the first Rivian trucks just hit the road a couple of days ago when i thought they first hit the road a couple of years ago?

Start my own business earlier.
