I just hope that when the current government that relates to SF/Bay Area is booted out, their institutional knowledge about Democracy is not lost. Ro Khanna has been giving invaluable advice on how to "restore Democracy" to Hindu Nationalist Modi, and it would be a real tragedy if that pipeline of invaluable institutional knowledge is lost.
Pankaj Mishra is as Western as any Britisher. He's been living in London for decades, has a byline in the Guardian (which also appeals for direct funds from readers in every article they publish online), and has sat on the board of the Open Society Foundation like other Westerners before him. He's as Western as any white-bread White/Caucasian British NPC who eats bangers and mash for breakfast. I will die on this hill.
It's too late. Hindu Nationalist Modi is going to lead India to genocide. In fact the genocide has already started.
He should learn ethics from Islamic Nationalist Imran Khan and Islamic Nationalist Shehbaz Sharif of the "constitutional Islamic State" of Pakistan (both of whom should also never be referred to as Islamic Nationalists even though they start speeches with quotes from the Quran and with "Allahu Akbar" because.... Because.).

Sigh... Benares used to be so beautiful. Smiling happy hungry people defecating on the side of the Ganges. Sigh. Little children doing physical manual labor all day to earn enough for a small piece of beautiful Benares roti. Sigh.
I miss the old days.
Racist much?
Pankaj Mishra is as British as any white Britisher who likes to eat bangers and smash for breakfast. Hindu Nationalist Modi has been a disaster.
Unlike Islamic Nationalist Imran Khan and Islamic Nationalist Shehbaz Sharif of the "constitutional Islamic State" of Pakistan (both of whom should also never be referred to as Islamic Nationalists even though they start speeches with quotes from the Quran and with "Allahu Akbar" because.... Because.).
Beautiful writing.
I love it when Western authors write poverty porn about India.
I too am nostalgic about the days when half the country was living in extreme poverty, and spent the whole day chasing their next meal.
As bad as global warming is, the Hindu Nationalist Modi is far far worse. Modi is killing Indians and Pakistanis by building digital infrastructure, public transportation, and providing toilets, LPG, and drinking water piped to village homes. Meanwhile, the Islamic Nationalist Imran Khan, and the Islamic Nationalist PM Shehbaz Sharif are all saints (sufi saints). Also, sorry for calling them Islamic Nationalists. I am aware that the rule in the media is that politicians in constitutional "Islamic States", who start their speeches with verses from the Quran, and with "Allahu Akbar", are not supposed to be referred to as Islamic Nationalists. Sorry!
Seems like a case of burnout.
Makes me question their hiring.
If they were good, surely these people could be absorbed in other areas of YC?
I was astonished that Roku has half a billion in cash.
Then I learned this was only 26% of its cash reserves.
I thought cash was considered wasteful because it loses value via inflation.
Has the thinking changed? Can someone knowledgeable please help me understand this?
Curious about this. Could you give me some idea of hourly and yearly* wages for cook, pedicab, junior software dev in your area please? I want to understand this phenomenon better. Thanks.
*The reason I mentioned hourly and yearly is that I'm wondering if a pedicab driver can put in 8 hour days like a cook or dev.
I suppose the fact that "native americans" were also from Siberia/Asia makes it complicated to separate Polynesian/Asian DNA from "native american" DNA.
The Mapuche people look stunningly Polynesian/Asian: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mapuche
Polynesians are Asian in origin.
Easter Islanders are believed to be Polynesian.
Here's a strange thing: there's some Asian-origin DNA in some of the indigenous people of Latin American. For some strange reason this is not discussed much.
I've noticed an uptick in car accidents in my area.
Students sit in the classroom scrolling tiktok.
I don't think we're going to make it.
Most of India is not Upper Caste. It is telling that the vast majority of India finally had functional sewage systems reach their village (99.9% coverage), electricity reach their village (99.9% coverage), cooking gas reach their village (100% coverage), and is now having clean water and fiber optic cable reach their village (currently ~75% coverage for each), only after the first non-Upper Caste person became Prime Minister (Modi).
I'm heavily on the spectrum, and sorry, but I don't see anything wrong with using chat GPT to polish up communication.
My guess is these deans too are heavily on the spectrum.
Many times in my life what seemed normal and okay to me, was severely offensive to others. It's a cross I have to bear.
For what it's worth, caste has fortunately ceased to have meaning in a tiny number of social and geographic circles.
But upper castes are in denial about how caste plays out in the rest of India.
They will claim it was something in the past. Wrong. Upper castes still often whisper about so and so being a *** (impolite way of referring to someone of a lower caste), or about such and such work (e.g. cleaning dishes) being the work of a *** and not a Brahmin like themselves.
Some now claim that caste was created by the British.
Wrong. Al Biruni (traveler from Persia) in 1020 wrote in Tarikh Al-Hind (History of India) about how when there was a communal meal in the village, a barrier needed to be put up between people of lower castes and people of upper castes.
My own personal experiences with caste (as someone exposed to it very late in life) were described here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31035615

LOL.
Follow on question for anyone reading this: Is there any evidence that pranayam (yogic breathing exercises) can heal mitochondria?
Is there any way to prove that the arrow of causality is the other way? (i.e., depression causes mitochondria).
Much appreciated, thank you.
Excellent advice. Will do.
You just know that it's going to be another WTF experience just like the Windows Media Player UI.

In 2017, I did Andrew Ng's original Stanford AI Coursera course.- it renewed my understanding of Matrix Algebra and more importantly "why" we need it (being from India, I was fortunate that I learned matrices by rote, and the Indian education system ensured that details like "why" on earth I needed to study this thing never had a chance to pollute my pristine mind /sarcasm).- it gave me an...
For anyone reading this (especially Donald Trump Jr. [DT's son]):
India will remain in the top three greenhouse gas and emissions producers forever.
If you don't understand why, please learn a little math.
Your point is good.
I seem to remember, after ChatGPT gave me a result (a list of only 103 words/phrases), I searched for the Spanish "Zipf's list" (highest frequency words) on Google Search (to compare it with what ChatGPT gave me).

Three times over the last month a striking coincidence.I use Chrome as my browser. Google owns both Chrome and YouTube.I can't remember the first two incidents any more, but they were on the same scale as the third incident. The third incident: two days ago I asked ChatGPT to give me the 600 most important words in Spanish. Today, YouTube has recommended me a video titled "100 most important...
You'd be surprised at how protectionist France is. Especially when it concerns content in English.
Look up "The Twitter Files by Matt Taibi".
Twitter uncritically and submissively followed directives from FBI and CIA.
I read some headlines that Meta/FB too uncritically and submissively followed the same directives.
