Re:Ask HN: Are companies preparing to end Remote? on Wednesday June 01, 2022 @01:41PM (#31585360)
They are going to try to. Many workers will resist.

Eventually we will reach a Nash equilibrium [1]

>> How unreliable is your power grid?

With climate change, I believe a lot of formerly reliable power grids will become less so in the future. Investments in distributed power generation and local storage will likely lead to a higher quality of life outcome for more people.

Ford has found value “sweet spots” with the $39k electric F-150 and the $19k, 30mpg Maverick. They are both very reasonable vehicle choices that almost any household could make use of.

I would go further and say discoverability seems to be a low or nonexistent priority industry-wide.
Re:My students cheated... a lot on Sunday May 29, 2022 @11:44AM (#31550028)
My university had a strict anti-cheating policy in the CS program. It was written very broadly. As a disadvantaged student, first in my family to attend college, I needed to graduate more than anything else in the world. The policy forbade discussing assignments or solutions with other students. The end result is I was terrified of socializing with any other CS students. I wonder how much I missed out on due to sheer terror and high stakes.
Re:Ask HN: What were your teachers like? on Saturday May 28, 2022 @10:06AM (#31540432)
At the time I thought they were mean and strict. And I thought they were forcing us to do too much work. But now I realize these were really great teachers and being pushed is exactly what I needed at that time.
Re:Can growth continue? on Friday May 27, 2022 @01:46PM (#31532492)
The standards have to change, and they may be “less” by some measures, but many people can still have a wonderful existence. Maybe you have to eat more vegetables and less cheeseburgers. Maybe you can’t drive your Suburban seven days a week to Starbucks. Maybe life will slow down and people will enjoy a higher quality of life with family and friends.
Sounds like a “burbclave” as predicted in the 90’s in Snow Crash
I believe an electric, ground-effect ferry is being planned for Hawaii

The technology has progressed. But have humans progressed?
>> "mount a sqlite database file as a normal filesystem"

I'm looking to do the opposite. Given a location, recurse it, stat() each file and create the database.

I have MacOS, where is the sqlite file?
I just want my entire file system stored in Sqlite so I can query it myself
Re:The death of 'mandatory fun' in the office on Thursday May 19, 2022 @11:26AM (#31435928)
I won't miss the Mandatory Fun Corporate T-Shirt. What a waste of resources. Printed up and shipped halfway around the world to be used one day and then donated to Goodwill. Let's do better!

Teachers, nurses, and janitors
Imagine that even with a warp drive, we are stuck in this little “air bubble” in the ocean
Re:Ask HN: How are urls shared within your company? on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @07:48PM (#31429005)
I've seen many companies with a Confluence page of "important links", this is often provided to developers and employees during onboarding. It is maintained and kept up to date.
Re:Hate your face mask? There’s hope on Wednesday May 18, 2022 @07:45PM (#31428977)
It's unfortunate that feelings about masks are framed as "hate". You don't have to love them, or hate them. You just need to use them as much as possible, indoors.

I frame mask-wearing as "love", in the sense that I love being alive and healthy and I want others to have the same.

Seeds. Like for plants. Life is the most amazing technology out there.
As a county resident, I also started doing this recently, and I am amazed how much organic waste we were throwing away previously. My regular trash can takes much longer to fill, and I am constantly taking out the little kitchen bin (that was provided by the waste company).
Or, make it so I can do my own "diff". In other words, teach me how to fish. Make the information discoverable.
