tax law is tax law, it's that simple. if the hedge fund did what the whistleblower alleges, then bye-bye tax exempt status.

also since when is a rainy day / reserve fund unique to a particular religion? it's been common sense financial practice for longer than your particular religion has been in existence.

The big deal is no blackouts. That's a first for pro sports broadcasting I think...
you can do this today with Jupyter Notebooks. Can you provide a value prop vis-a-vis Jupyter Notebooks? (aside of course from the raging dumpster fire of lack of curation in JN re vulns...)
Re:Show HN: WAPM – WebAssembly Package Manager on Wednesday March 02, 2022 @03:09PM (#30532320)
In this day and age, it's arguably irresponsible to publish any tooling that does not organically integrate a requirement to use Sigstore for all packages allowed to be uploaded.

The very first things you should be talking about on your service is provenance mechanisms and security.

I don't believe I saw anything related to thos topics on your site. Did I miss it?

I think you'd be a little surprised. I have a friend in Chicago who's bike commuted year round now for decades.

That's anecdotal for sure but once you are acclimatized to winter I think the gating criteria is more around a secure place to park your bike during the day.

I have another work buddy in Minneapolis who sends me pictures of the temp guage on his Fat-Bike of like -20F training rides in Jan and Feb... yikes!!!!

The Athletic folks had a tent up at the Lutsen MTB race a few weekends back. It is actually really good, no difference in taste quality from the "leaded" stuff. This has definitely come a long way.

Perhaps timely too! https://youtu.be/3Xa1L01ZNaY

This is the best assessment to date I've seen.

https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/06/29/1027290/gain-of-...

After something like 6+ months of introspection from the first test fire fail...after a decade plus of missed schedules...blah, blah, blah.

The SLS is a shit-show, everyone knows it and it's getting tedious being a tax payer given this bull shit, the F35 debacle, etc.

I'm a NASA fan, but the reality is that the age of G funded space travel is OVER. time to move on....

lol, prob one or two stingrays floating around that area....
Re:Fintech in Chains on Tuesday September 15, 2020 @09:58PM (#24488816)
How in the world is looser regulation of opaque (at best) SV bullshit CO's a good idea? The more relevant question to ask is what exactly is the value prop of fintech?

I don't see it as any different than the mortgage brokers of the 2008's: stripping fees off transactions with ZERO value add to the consumer...

If you want to really fix things start with the national market system. At this point between dark pools, HFT and non-public company markets it is an unqualified effing disaster from both a price discovery and accessibility perspective.

#justsayin

Re:DoD Shits the Bed on Sunday July 19, 2020 @04:44PM (#23892290)
This is nothing short of a an unqualified disaster. Peter Thiel's influence here is not in the best interest of the Republic, and Trump is too effing stupid to realize that...
the not so secret reality of all of this is that saudi money is everywhere. and they only very recently allowed women to drive a car.

there's no question that the valley is owned / driven by this influence. the question is: at what cost?

but, I digress, by all means, please, continue on the start-up-y discourse...

<rant> Is anyone really surprised? Current culture world-wide is built on 15 second attention span idiocy and social media bs.

Want to see this go away? Remove FB/Insta/Twitter from the planet, along with the entire mainstream media, all of which have business models based on the aforementioned idiocy as well as non-stop conflict generation.

When you are done with that task go purge every sitting legislative body on the planet which in general are bought and paid for by those same special interests.

Then you'd have a clean slate to build on for intelligent dialog and meaningful efforts related to not just Covid 19, but many other pressing global concerns...</rant>

Re:Finding a problem at the bottom of the Google stack on Sunday March 15, 2020 @12:21PM (#22584248)
this is awesome. one of the by-products of the public cloud era is a loss of the having to consider the physical side of things when considering operational art.
The "Gig Economy" will ultimately go down in history as one of the greatest frauds ever perpetrated on the broader public.
We are down to like one or two remaining professional journalism shops (FT and Economist, imho).

Sad to see once decent, thoughtful operations like WSJ, NY Times, WaPo, basically turned into conflict generation drivel producers.

Edit to add: I don't mean to ignore efforts like Pro Publica, but they are very small ops and don't really move the needle readership-wise.

ok, so this is being provided by a new/competing bank and a marketing agency. What could possibly go wrong?

A quick read of privacy policy should dissuade anyone form putting information into this system.

A+ for guerilla marketing

F- for anything related to privacy, etc...

Re:Jepsen: Dgraph 1.0.2 on Thursday August 23, 2018 @09:27PM (#17832070)
gotta say, if you do distributed systems, subject yourself to Jepsen analysis and publish it, you win a truck-load of points in my book.
yeah, but sites like r3vlimited, rennlist, jeepforum are just better moderated, more friendly and have more helpful content (i.m.h.o)
Re:Giving Up on the Current MacBook Pro Keyboard on Wednesday April 25, 2018 @06:40PM (#16926998)
just laid my 2013 MBP to rest after full 12 oz water spill onto keyboard. Have no doubt it would have lasted much longer were it not for my fumble.

Have a new MBP with old-stool keyboard (yes I have and esc key), and it feels good so far, but oh boy will I be pissed if it shits the bed.

these things are too expensive to fail that easily. "design" is one thing but, fragiltiy not ok.

Re:Southwest Airlines is intimidating our startup on Thursday November 16, 2017 @03:03PM (#15716059)
price discovery is a "b"...
pro-tip for Ms. Tolentino:

Get off the island for a bit, it's warping your perception of reality...

i'll grant that i can exude a somewhat negative outlook. but seriously, are you even remotely surprised about a comment like this related to uber?

If we're being honest uber represents pretty much everything negative comeing out of SV at this point....

Frankly I expect more from the valley (and from YC) in general..#justsayin...

yawn...

# of f to give == 0

oh great, yet another avenue for younger generations to bleed more of their IQ (and by extension wealth) off.

at some point this shit-show is going to come home to roost.... (wait...that's happening now multi-generationally with trump)....

seriously, after the multi-decade debacle of the 24 hour conflict channels (CNN/MSNBC/FOX) one would think we'd learned our lesson...

apparently not.....

I am shocked, shocked! to find out there is gambling going on in Casablanca.....
this turns the stupid up to 11....
heh, of course you are correct. i was using "null-routing" in a more borad methaphorical sense, in a weak attempt at humor.

Norks are China's useful idiots so nothing going to change in near term...

lol...at some point there will have to be some type of specifc discussion on null-routing that shit-hole of a country...
