Re:Amethyst – A tiling window manager for OS X on Thursday December 18, 2014 @11:57AM (#8768221)
Seems to me that there are 2 big benefits over sizeup (though i'm basing this entirely on their website, i've not used it)

1 - With sizeup you have to manually move your apps around. With this, new windows are automatically tiled (and you can then move things around afterwards with the keyboard shortcuts)

2 - This seems like it supports more complex layouts (with various layouts built in)

Weird, I was literally just googling for this and found Amethyst. Seems nice.

I've noticed it gets a little slow to rearrange things sometimes with lots of windows but the functionality I need is all there.

Works great with my three screen setup too, which many tools like this don't.

Small comment: I was slightly confused by the new game form.

I assumed that your watermarked values were defualts (which i was happy with) .... so didn't change them, then couldn't work out why the create game button was disabled.

Re:Being alone on Tuesday October 29, 2013 @03:22PM (#6636760)
Both of these statements can be true ... if you specifically look around for people who are by themselves, they are easy to spot ... but the majority of people are not looking!
Re:Sublime Text packages on Wednesday July 31, 2013 @08:01AM (#6133042)
Does this offer any real benefit over the official list on the sublime package control page?

http://wbond.net/sublime_packages/community

One suggestion to bring it to at least feature parity: It is useful to display the operating systems that each package supports.

Re: Try Git on Friday March 15, 2013 @07:54AM (#5380073)
I like the idea of this, would be good to wean a few people off the github client onto the command line.

I can understand that this wants to create a real repository on my github, but it is asking permission to read/write to private repos, so I stopped at that point.

RavenDB is also ACID I beleive? The foundation site makes it sound like they are the only one.

Random little project I put together over the past couple days, inspired by the excellent delorean ipsum. (http://www.deloreanipsum.com/)

I was hoping someone would come in and spend the time to explain this, the comments were getting pretty depressing!

Event sourcing CQRS are very interesting once you get your head around the use cases.

Re:The Hobbit: Why 48FPS Makes Film Less Magical on Wednesday December 19, 2012 @04:14AM (#4941771)
I saw it at the weekend, and I guess I am in a minority judging by reviews, but I honestly didn't think the HFR was that bad. (Maybe my opinion will change when I re-watch in 2d?)

Firstly, I normally come away from a 3D film with my eyes feeling extremely strained, but the Hobbit was the first film where this wasn't the case, which was a refreshing change.

There were a couple scenes, particularly at the start, that somehow felt weird as described in the article thanks to the HFR, but to say it stopped people laughing at the jokes seems pretty extreme, that wasn't the case with the audience I was sat in.

In other scenes, the benefits were clear: Panning landscape style shots were judder free. You could actually see what was happening in action scenes, rather than the usual mess of blur. (Made worse in many films by their insistence on making things more "exciting" by going into shaky-cam mode)

Ultimately, I think what we will settle on is a variable frame rate set-up, where talking heads, indoor scenes with little action can be shown in 24fps to prevent the "soap opera" look that people hate, and action/high motion scenes can reap the benefits of 48fps.

Re:Jail Looms for Man Who Revealed AT&T Leaked iPad User E-Mails on Tuesday November 20, 2012 @08:23AM (#4808843)
The article states

"Weev and a fellow hacker who originally uncovered AT&T’s mistake and collected the e-mails didn’t ask the company for permission to access the Web addresses that shared iPad users’ private information"

I really don't see how this argument holds up.

From a technical point of view the very nature of HTTP includes asking for permission. You send a request "Please can I see the information at this URL" If the organisation running the server does not give that permission, it should not serve the data.

These charges seem pretty odd to me, hopefully it gets resolved in a sensible manner.

Ask HN: Self hosted web analytics packages

I work in the pharmaceutical industry. Some of our customer facing systems contain patient data and so we cant take the risk of using something like google analytics which might leak info to an external service.I have looked at mint (http://getamint.com) but that doesn't seem to collect much more than the basics, would be nice to be able to track usage paths through the site etc.A huge bonus...

Re:E-mail anyone via their phone number on Wednesday November 07, 2012 @03:48AM (#4752749)
This raises some questions for me. I can't try it out, since I am not in the US, but what is the exact explanation you give in that initial text?

If i receive an SMS that says "Steve would like to send you something. What is your email address?" I might reply because I am happy for Steve to email me things.

However that does not necessarily mean that I want to allow anyone other than Steve to email me from that point forward... would be a nasty surprise if you dont explain this clearly.

Server seems to be struggling, google cache here

I'd definitely like to see some other sources on this one!

Interesting, I was wondering how long it would take for this kind of proxy to pop up.

I don't appear to be able to remove my app.net account once I have added it, just get the following error:

Cannot GET /remove/2338
