To the defense of the models, the experiment was run with temperature set at 0.01 which is very low; setting this can lead to weird responses. My find-on-page also found no mention of “thinking” or “reasoning” in the paper. Not trying to discount the whole thing but very curious how changing the parameters might affect results
It’s uncomfortable to agree because I think companies should decide what they do and don’t allow in the ecosystems they own. But once an ecosystem becomes so pervasive & necessary, I think control must be turned over to people.
I love free+local. Can you add SVG->PNG with transparency? I never need help with any of the conversions you support today, but going from vector to raster would be super convenient!
Thanks for sharing! I tried using it for Thai language coming from English and found that the app understands me well! But I couldn’t understand it at all. It replied to my turns with very long messages (20+ syllables) in pure Thai and spoke with an unnatural rhythm which made it hard to pick out words or phrases. The foreign alphabet made it really difficult too. I tried changing some settings in the bottom left menu and it started speaking English to me too, but I found it unbearably slow. At one point it asked me if I wanted it to speak in pure Thai or a mix and then ignored my answer. Ultimately as a beginner I don’t think Issen will work for me very well as-is. Happy to check back in the future!
Finally, pictures of the inside! That’s what I really wanted to see when I heard about this last year

Re:How Common Is Multiple Invention? on Thursday June 05, 2025 @07:43PM (#44196648)
I've thought a few times when reading some funding announcement on techcrunch, "That was my idea!" which is super validating and nice to see. Some of these multiple-inventions are pretty inspiring to learn about. I think it reinforces concretely the idea that "execution" matters more than anything else.

Nice game. But if this is just for fun please take out those horrible ads
How can I block traffic from bots using Metal?
Summary of original post written in ChatGPT style with no original substance… my guess is yes!
Re:Launch HN: Exa (YC S21) – The web as a database on Thursday May 08, 2025 @02:07AM (#43923501)
I searched for series b startups hiring for data analyst roles in the Bay Area for a friend. It returned lots of bigger companies that I didn’t want included. I also had no luck trying to figure out how to copy paste or share the results (using iPhone). Overall though I think this is a great idea and wish you the best!
I tried to vibe code a web app with windsurf and found it appeared to do really well in the beginning. But I had to harsh the vibes in two types of scenarios it couldn’t understand or solve on its own: performance and css animation.

When I copy paste via ChatGPT I direct the model on what to do and retain responsibility and understanding of all code getting saved.

I do really like Cascade in windsurf because it does a decent job of parsing the entire codebase and finding the spot to make changes. But I think I’ll probably be most successful combining my approaches and using Cascade at a coding level not a “vibe” level

Re:Ask HN: Share your AI prompt that stumps every model on Thursday April 24, 2025 @01:34PM (#43785309)
I haven’t been able to get any AI model to find Waldo in the first page of the Great Waldo Search. O3 even gaslit me through many turns trying to convince me it found the magic scroll.
Re:How to Force Your Kids to Do Math? on Saturday April 19, 2025 @07:07PM (#43740177)
30 minutes of play per 3 days is such a brutal reality to acknowledge. One of the most wonderful experiences in all of life so drastically limited by the society we’ve constructed.
Re:Significant performance improvements with Edge 134 on Wednesday April 16, 2025 @02:50AM (#43702254)
I have this strange hypocritical mental model which simultaneously dismisses improvements to Edge as irrelevant while also wishing and rooting for more browser competition elsewhere.
My iOS Stocks app says S&P 500 is up 146.23% over the last 5 years. But isn’t that much too short an interval to evaluate in the first place in consideration for retirement?
Depending on the culture of the company, the product management function will come with a range of expectations from the powers that be — figure those out asap. Figure out the big personalities, the values of the company, and obviously start talking to their customers on week 1 and every week (day?) thereafter.

As a senior PM, you probably need to pay a lot more attention to your executive stakeholders than a junior PM who might focus instead on lower level cross functional needs, developer focus, design, etc. I would also suggest that after you’re comfortable with your onboarding that you embrace high visibility and even fight for it if anyone discourages you or devalues your communication efforts. Good luck!

Re:Graph-Based Ceramics on Tuesday July 09, 2024 @07:52PM (#40922515)
This is awesome. About five years ago I wanted to solve the same problem of tracking my pots and glazes. I also noticed the many:many relationship very quickly and deliberated on the schema. Neo4j looked really cool but I think I ended up going with join tables (ie pots, glazes, pot_glaze) in Postgres. I think I didn’t get nearly as far as you did in a weekend though!

Lately I hack in firebase and have been interested in trying supabase. I’ll have to add instantdb to my list.

You should productionize this! Get glaze recipes in there too!

Re:The Most Talented Person in the World on Tuesday May 14, 2024 @08:56PM (#40361898)
That kind of verification could be off-protocol. Perhaps a reputation or incentive system could help as well.

Maybe a social endorsement scheme could be an alternative to an invasive proof system.
You receive a call on your phone. The caller says they’re from your bank. You never notice because you ignore unexpected calls that aren’t from family and you don’t check your voicemail.
Re:Hacker News (HN) – Part 1: analysis on Monday April 08, 2024 @08:02PM (#39974991)
I think there could be an aspect of social cooling contributing to decreased per-user engagement. I find myself considering my online comments more carefully now than I did 10 years ago across all platforms.
I’m surprised that a followers-only post’s author’s information would be available to followers of original author’s followers. I would think that a non-public discussion started by one account should be nonexistent to anyone without access to follow that account.

Ask HN: What problems/ideas would you like to see someone else work on?

Howdy HN! Some friends and I are getting away to an Airbnb next weekend to focus on hacking on projects and supporting each other building stuff. I’m really excited but I’m undecided on what I want to work on.Do you have any (smaller) problems or ideas you think are worth exploring but that you don’t want to do yourself?

If you work or worked at a startup, wouldn’t you want to leave a positive review regardless of your experience in order to increase the odds of your equity being worth anything?
Re:Companies use dark patterns to keep you subscribed on Thursday May 04, 2023 @11:07AM (#35816550)
Given that the author points out Vimeo as being the worst offender in their sample, I wonder if having a lot of dark patterns is a signal that the core value proposition of the business isn't strong enough to stand alone.

2nd thought is that every dark pattern that makes it harder to cancel or easier to sign up is a bullet point on a resume of a growth hacker somewhere.

> We believe our models should reflect our consumers, which is why we’re continuing to diversify our human models in terms of size and body type, age and skin color

Does this mean that as a consumer I should see a diverse set of models or only see models reflecting my own traits? Is there a balance to strike between personalization and diversity, or is that a false dichotomy?

Re:Nalanda: The university that changed the world on Monday March 06, 2023 @06:19PM (#35049264)
I had the same reaction. I read the first line of the article and instantly knew I didn’t have the patience to find the content implied by the title. There have been discussions here about this problem for recipe sites especially. What I wonder is whether the majority of their readers (non HN people) also feel annoyed by this.

I love this part

> You do not need to take any action; this change will take effect automatically and be reflected in the next billing cycle after the change is activated.

Is it the view of the tech CEOs bosses (shareholders) that anything has been done wrong? It seems that they are responsible for their successes and failures both, and layoffs are only seen as failures because CEOs are pitching them as such to sell their layoffs to employees.
