Ask HN: How do you focus on work for long periods of time?

I've used Adderall (not ADHD diagnosed) a couple of times, and it helps a significant amount. However, I know it can't be the real solution - my problem is concretely that anytime I work on something, I can't work on it for long amounts of time - every 15 minutes, I will either visit HN, Reddit, some game, or have to get up and physically leave the desk. I can't bring myself to work on things...

I would say it’s also a mix of nextdoor - both of which are still just as toxic.

Tempted to say the problem is just the internet breeding toxicity in general. Maybe we could all do better with less internet and more nature time

Drizly drivers don’t scan. Most liquor stores scan.
Honestly, somebody should take action against Drizly for how easy they make buying alcohol underage if anything (not that I care).
Also being realistic, anyone who’s ever ever ever smoked weed in their life can tell you honestly it does not impair your ability to drive even 10% close to being drunk. yes it’s an anecdote, but it’s genuinely the truth.

I'm a current sophomore at Harvard, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But those ECs and stats really aren't impressive enough to even qualify him for admission at any Ivy or T20.

UIUC and UT Austin I agree, little surprising, but again, the CS program is very competitive, and it doesn't surprise me he didn't get in. Stats are irrelevant for Asians - if you have a 1500+ you're considered "good", you can't gain anything by having a 1580 vs. a 1520 for example. It really does come down to your essays, extracurriculars, and overall 'package'. Which I genuinely believe is the most fair way to accept folks into college.

This is such a bad-faith comment and so dog-whistly that I feel wrong for even engaging with it, but I have to.

> Black people faced all the same obstacles in the sports arena?

No, African-Americans endured physical slavery for hundreds of years, leading to a disposition for physical work. Africans also come from a continent with the hottest average temperature, and in general are more athletically inclined.

And let's look past even that for a moment - why do you think some of the best players in the NBA are starting to come from Eastern Europe? Hmm, I wonder, could it have anything to do with the massive amount of investment into training and player facilities that is pouring into the area? Perhaps we could apply that analogy to academics as well, and realize the INCREDIBLY obvious fact that Asians tend to perform well because our parents have money to push us, we grow up in a culture surrounded by other kids who push us to do better, and we have _privilege_.

It has absolutely nothing to do with "race". It is an entirely privilege-driven issue (do you have resources, or do you not?), and if you still fail to see that, then you're most likely just letting your intrinsic bias/racism drive your thought process.

Re:Ask HN: So you moved off Heroku, where did you go? on Tuesday October 04, 2022 @12:27PM (#33082728)
How was it 0 to 0? Just curious.
not op, but as a student in cambridge, the T is very good for getting in and around boston, but getting to cambridge is a little bit of hassle. take the red line all the way to park street, and then take it back around almost in a loop to anywhere on the green line.

i don't know why i'm complaining though, it is still a fantastic public transportation system compared to many others.

People come back on different devices, different browsers, clear cookies, shop at a later date etc.

I wonder what the last sentence of his comment implies.
How do you obtain authentication cookies for HN? Have them login once and store it in keychain?

Ask HN: Have you used GPT-3/similar systems for busy work yet?

I'm a college student, so I've got a lot of work that feels pointless - section responses, discussion board posts, essays, reflections, etc.A huge life optimization for me right now would be a cheap, efficient way of generating writing good enough to pass.Have you used any of the new online AI systems to do busy work yet, and how efficient have they been?

It’s ironic he’s been here since 2010 and me and you are actually new here.
I don’t think the point is “everything is pointless”, insomuch as “everything is more pointless seeming than social interactions”.

Social interactions seem to be at least part of the “human motive” for most people I’d guess.

Sorry, but wow you got this wrong. I’m not sure if it was just a guess or something, but look at the comment below for what it actually is. The money laundering is in the form of purchasing botted streams.
Re:Apple expands Self Service Repair to Mac notebooks on Monday August 22, 2022 @10:03AM (#32551506)
Such a strong pipeline of stolen Apple devices -> backdoor shady PC repair shops -> North Africa. I too got to watch my buddies iPhone’s live journey. At least it was a bit entertaining.
not only does a good portion of the world have high BMI and does nothing about it, we as a country have now gone so far as to say it's 'OK' to have a high BMI. I know in advance this comment will be misinterpreted, but it's genuinely sad that our advertisements, education, and social media all parrot the same message that it's okay to be overweight.
I think you have that backwards buddy.
very cool product - congrats!

do you ever wonder if similar to the college application process, trying to "gamify" the promotion process doesn't actually lead to a competitive company?

to be more clear, do you think that by training people to think of trying to get promoted as something they need to learn, rather than come by naturally, we're teaching people to follow XYZ funnel in order to attain ABC goal, at the expense of promoting people naturally?

the reason i mention the college application process is because it's clear that's what that accomplishes today, as someone who recently went through it. there's a set of predefined formulas that can get you into an elite school, and they become more and more limited in scope as you become more and more limited demographic-wise, so everyone "learns" from prep academies, consultantnts, etc., the _exact_ right way to structure your application to get in.

i still feel like i'm not clear, so i'll rephrase it as, do you think this sort of "teaching" leads to the right people getting promoted/accepted for the company/college (for long-term success)?

Dude, this is sick. surprised you didn't try to make this a business, but props for that.
Blind would be a cool one but it kinda defeats the purpose.
"clickbait"

Check out Harvard/NEC - I am a current student at H and a lot of people I know have great things to say about it.

Have any recommendations on designers?

Wow, those are actually great! Would you mind sending me a link to those/that designer? email in bio

I doubt you could get that level of quality illustrations/logo from Fiverr, but I could be wrong.

The actual page redesign, I agree - where would you recommend hiring a designer from if you don't actually know design, then?
