"if my product were a success in the US market it would make more profit."

The "If" in your statement is exactly my point.

You're right, the US government has zero corruption. haha jokes aside, that's a fair point.

But if you're selling there, you can still manage to avoid a lot of the red tape, bureaucracy, etc. You can be a c-corp and sell there. I'm sure a lot of the US companies that sell there don't have to engage in all that, so why not focus on that market?

Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @06:05AM (#38542446)
What about it? Solid business
Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @06:03AM (#38542429)
Talent in Brazil is far cheaper and as good - I would argue that that is part of the setup ease. US has overinflated salaries making it inaccessible without private funding. That works when the VC funds are flowing but not in this interest rate environment.
Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @06:00AM (#38542415)
Brazil is a great example. 218M+ people. 1 Language. Sure there's less willingness to pay/wealth, but the fruits are lower hanging. You can sell less complex products at a wider scale with less competition.

Sure they have limits but why start in the US? What makes it great is what makes it super competitive.

Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @05:58AM (#38542403)
Sure, but how many apps does the average Manhattanite already pay for? You think they care about your app? In Brazil for example, the fruits are lower hanging it's 200M+ people, the probability of making more money is higher.
Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Wednesday December 06, 2023 @05:55AM (#38542385)
Yeah but Brazil is homogenous and has 200M+ people - not as wealthy but far less competition there. Why would you try to capture the US market if there's lower hanging fruit? I don't get it.
Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @10:26AM (#38532064)
The equation is $$$ X ability to capture $$$.

US is oversaturated with products, solutions, competitors, etc...

Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @09:34AM (#38531218)
I agree - I just think that there are far more enriching businesses to build than social media. Especially with the current business model. Not much good in that IMO
Re:U.S. Market Is Overrated on Tuesday December 05, 2023 @08:51AM (#38530637)
Yeah but we don't need another social media site... Such a waste of time building more of those. I'm talking valuable businesses that add to society.

I think you can achieve "scale" in markets like Brazil which aren't as attractive but still have +200M people if you build the right thing.

And the right thing can be simple and something that has worked in markets like the US before.

I wanted to emphasise as usually the product that works is the "simplest" - we made lots of pivots and wrote lots of code before we came up with this more simple solution

U.S. Market Is Overrated

Why do so many founders build for the US or with the ambition to go sell in the US? I get the consumerist culture, higher willingness to pay, etc, but there are so many other markets where you can build and sell much simpler products and dominate. Why compete in the biggest pool when you can dominate a smaller one?

We don't build on top of WhatsApp Business API - we enable sales teams to use WhatsApp personal and WhatsApp Business accounts to talk to clients. This is something that lots of businesses prefer doing for higher touch relationships.
There is - it just involves us helping get you setup. We haven't built the UI side of things for self-serve so a quick setup call and we can then configure things in the backend for you directly
Didn't fit in the title haha - just wanted to emphasise that its just serverless

Show HN: Pivots and millions later, I built a lambda to start WhatsApp chats

https://compose.im/lead-router

I've been working on my startup for years to no avail. Raised VC money and burned through millions - now built a simple service that lets you add a "chat to us" button (or can hook to your forms) to launch a WhatsApp chat. The key here is that the button can open chats with different WhatsApp numbers based on rules you can set. These rules can be based on the website visitor's geography,...

Thanks for the feedback! I haven’t optimised nor tested on those platforms as I don’t have access to them. It should be working on all mainstream OSes/browsers.

Show HN: WikiWho? – A Wordle-Like Wikipedia Based Guessing Game

https://www.playwikiwho.com/

Heyy,I've been building this game for the past few weeks and I'm excited to share it with you all. What is it?WikiWho? is a Wordle-like guessing game where you are shown a Wikipedia Pane and you have to guess who the person is.You can reveal more of the pane by clicking on the "Reveal" button, but you lose points for doing so. You get 3 attempts to guess the correct person. If you can't guess the...

Afraid I don't have much in the way of experience with Rust or WASM so can't help there.

Maybe instead of lat/long, you expose a dropdown of popular cities? Again not bulletproof but does make the user's life easier

It is the just Forest haha.

Yeah, having a target number of ants or varying sizes could be interesting but I don't want small ants dying either :'(

Agreed in game time is nice to match up to real life. But, do you really need detailed location data though? You can get rough location/timezone in a much less intrusive way using IP. You could even get timezone just in JS on the client side even. That should be enough to match up time (not sunset sunrise but better than nothing and less input from user)

I like the concept and I'm a big fan of it being a mental health companion - a bit like that forest app that went viral (sorry cant remember the name).

But I do think that the mechanics linking the ant colony and the player's mental health need to be designed in a "healthy" manner.

If breath work is what you want to encourage, maybe best to link that to the colony's well-being without ants dying.. Not sure how it would work but just highlighting that it won't scale as the colony will need more and more food than the player is willing to breath through and that might be frustrating/demoralising.

All in all, I think there is definitely something here! It's quite mesmerising to watch.

Another thing I think can be improved: the controls. There's too many options. Just start with really good defaults and maybe only expose a fast forward slider that's a simple 2x, 5x, 10x time speed up.

I hope this helps and well done!

Thanks - already have a couple. See you there :-)

Update: Have been digging into this more and it looks like we're going to switch to QuestDB.

Seems like a solid bet with clear roadmap, pricing and strong performance. Also, looks to be more affordable than Timescale.

InfluxDB was such a bait though - it has potential but unfortunately, don't want to take that risk with our infrastructure.

Thanks for the answers below - was really helpful in making a decision.

yeah AirTags did that for me too - I put one in my suitcase. Gamifies waiting for luggage haha
It seems like they added an "alternative face" feature - managed to scan that after putting in my password
Haha yeah - colleagues did a double take today

It's better because you can keep that video floating on top of your other apps. It'll follow you as you switch between windows and you can even hide it to the side if it's blocking something.
