Ask HN: What are some nice Indian tech companies/startups?

I ask this for inspiration.I am a junior dev at a tier 2 company in India. The job is kinda boring but pay is good for an early 20s guy. I was looking to boost my interest in tech by looking at Indian tech scene but its disappointing. The tech companies are either old school outsourcing sweatshops like WITCH companies or new age copy cats like Ola, or YADA - yet another delivery app. There are...

up your network mojo (not the tcp/ip kind).
Re:SQLite: Wal2 Mode on Monday January 15, 2024 @07:46AM (#39000247)
tangential point: one thing that always bothered me about WAL is that it is supposed to exist to help maintain data integrity, recover from crash etc but that file itself is written (committed to disk reliably) in batches and not after every change to the database, apparently to gain performance. Doesn't that defeat the purpose? How haven't things broken down despite this? Not specific to sqlite but databases in general. Never found an answer to this.
Is this wrt USA? In India its not particularly a rule.

Ask HN: Does an academic's reputation depends on the uni they graduated or teach

I ask this in the context of deciding the "worth" of authors of textbooks. What I mean is if someone got PhD in tier 2 uni but is prof at tier 1 like Ivy League in US, is he deemed "better" than the opposite, that is PhD from tier 1 but prof in tier 2? With no other info about authors I base my judgement on this fact so want to know your opinion.

I don't understand the appeal of these langs, I mean its fun as a hobby to develop but srsly who uses it? Unless you show me real stuff like loading an image and manipulating it or opening a file and parsing text for some pattern etc all the factorials won't cut it. The syntax looks real pain in the slot, worse than modern C++ but atleast the latter works like a charm and easy to understand if you cut the clutter.

Ask HN: Beyond the AI Bandwagon

I live in Bangalore and work as a junior SDE at some unknown small company and want to boost my career. My current job is maintaining some boring CRUD like apps in python/C++. I see the industry is obssessed with AI esp lang model ones or at least it seems in the echo chamber. My question is what to learn and invest in for long term relevance. Databases? OS? IoT? AwS? COBOL? I am open for...

you have no clue about india's problems, its like I talking about some central american country by just reading bits and pieces about it and rag picking facts to support on the interwebs with zero knowledge IRL, please stop
lol @ econ nerding, ffs I live in India and know the reality so stop this rag picking facts to suit your worldview
comparing india's poverty and social issues (in 21st century ffs) with usa's in 60s is like comparing apples and orangutans, congratulations is warranted but not patronizing
what does start up in construction even mean and do?

Ask HN: How does ChatGPT understand the prompts?

I somewhat understand how it generates texts, but I don't understand how can it understand the query to generate the text? I googled and landed on [1] which doesn't answer me. Why is here no info on this part?[1] https://ai.stackexchange.com/questions/38294/how-does-chatgpt-respond-to-novel-prompts-and-commands

I am from Bangalore India. I was just window shopping and came across some insane salaries for Amazon SDE and am currently feeling somewhat down. I posted a question about it here, please someone reply.
