The practical issue the George isn't addressing is that we are (currently) reliant in data centers hosting, and local frontier-esque models are currently price prohibitive in terms of RAM.

These companies absolutely can not and will not take on the legal liability of serving models that give consumers instructions on cooking meth.

That being said, I agree with what he is saying, it's just that we need the memory supply chain to catch up so we can run ablated GLM models locally.

Rest in peace :(

Worth noting that Wikipedia at the time of this post is refusing to acknowledge his death, citing poor sources.

Hope he is alive and well. May he rest in peace if not

One of the reasons I hope hacker news stays relatively obscure. Fingers crossed

Only works against the database the extension manages. Biased in comparison to the native dislike button.

The Author passed away. That's probably why you didn't receive a response.

>There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Devastated to hear this. RIP Norm. I loved you.

I'm actually a W2 through an agency, so the other half of my FICA is covered by the agency. The agency also provides some health insurance.

> likes switching companies once every 12 to 18 months

This does kind of resonate with me. I'm kind of restless now having been working on the same project for a year.

I don't think the benefits adds up to a 40K difference a year. As I said, I get health insurace, but no 401k matching. If I got something like 10% 401k matching I'd get about $400 per pay period ($400 * 12 = 4800).

I'm worried that these salary guys are going to be in some wildly better position in 10+ year because they committed to a company. But I don't really see how they will be.

Thank you so much for the response.

They recently implemented PayByPhone at my apartment complex to the extreme chagrin of many residents including myself.

We had a guest parking lot where your guests would simply park. No sort of registration, but if the car stayed for 3+ days without notifying management it would be booted.

Now if I want a guest to visit, they have to download an app and enter their credit card info and license plate number for the pleasure. Every time I have a guest over, instead of the normal pleasantries I have to warn them to register their car lest they be ticketed by the overly zealous parking enforcement officers. The process takes around 10 minutes for someone unfamiliar. It is absolutely infuriating, though I blame apartment management more than PayByPhone.

To play devil's advocate for both sides. I think there is a freedom of speech problem online. I think the idea of an the internet being an open forum for discussion of ideas (even controversial) is a major benefit.

But there is a problem with free speech absolutist sites like 4chan and Gab in that they attract all of the bad actors that are banned from traditional media for their fringe beliefs.

I'm really interested in finding a solution to this. To make a free speech platform that attracts conventional users but allows for fringe discussion as well. The only thing I can really think of is for established platforms like youtube and twitter to do away with any rules limiting speech (with exceptions for material that is illegal). They already have a base of conventional users that wouldn't leave. I don't think this will happen though.

Thanks for the response Kevin, great advice. I really enjoyed your post! I hope to be as impressive a developer as you one day.

Sort of on the same path right now. Biggest obstacle I'm running into is that most of the work I'm finding is through recruiters, which of course means that a chunk of the money goes to the recruiter before I receive it.

The rates are still decent, but I'm not working with enough of a financial buffer to compensate for the downtime I'm having. I'm brand new at this though and I expected this sort of difficulty curve to start out with.

On a side note, if you've got an Angular or react project you are working on in the Atlanta area or remote and need some help, reach out to me :)

Thanks so much for the reply! My medium-long term goal is to turn what I'm doing as a freelancer into my own consultancy/development firm.

Really appreciate the feedback. I'll look into integrating this sort of thing into my future contracts.

Thanks for the reply! Did you submit this clause to them yourselves when you agreed to the work? I'm not working with an agency, I'm just scouting work myself. It seems like I could generate a lot of friction from potential employers by asking them to sign a clause like this.

I'm been searching online to see if the specific project I just left could be publicly connected to the company for which I worked, and I'm finding that all of my fellow contractors have listed the project on their linkedin. I think I'm going to take their queue and put it on my resume myself.

White collar sociopathy. These guys at the top lack an empathetic intuition.

Strange because throughout this thread a lot of users seem to consider HN/Reddit social media. I don't personally think of these as social media whatsoever. They are content/news aggregators imo.

Social media to me is a site that is mostly not anonymous, and is connected to your real life identity where you are mostly sharing content about your personal life.

Your post reminds me of this excellent post on metagames.

The naive employee you mention who strives towards OKR completion wins the game, but loses the metagame of corporate ladder climbing.

It's kind of a question of integrity. Do we have a moral obligation to disagree with something someone says that we feel is wrong? Even if it's not in our interest to do so?

Maybe we do, maybe we don't.

Personally, if someone with a large influence on my income says something I find offensive or outright idiotic, I disagree in a polite way that shows that I respect their opinion even if I don't. If I feel that it would really offend them I'm not above lying and pretending that I do.

Sometimes I feel morally conflicted about this, but it's kept me out of trouble.

The problem with this line of thought is that it is used to strongarm people with conventional right wing political views into silence by accusing them of harboring the taboo opinions you listed.

You cannot utter even the most platonic of right wing sentiments without the shrieks of frantic lunatics accusing you of being Hitler himself.

This idea of taboo subjects is exploited by nefarious far left activists, not for the cause of 'decency' or the preservation of western liberalism, but as a bludgeon to silence all thoughtcrime of the right.

I've been following the recent death/hoax of Terry Davis very closely.

As far as I can tell it is so far unconfirmed by any reliable sources. But from what I've gathered it unfortunately seems likely that Terry has passed away. The prominent theory is that he was a victim of an accident involving a train in the Dalles, Oregon.

This has supposedly been confirmed by family members but everything I've heard is from unscrupulous sources.

"Two officers will come to the door, ask if everything is ok, perhaps ask to look around, and then leave as calmly as they arrived."

Did you read what Barris told the police operator in the article?

"Barriss allegedly then called the emergency 911 operators in Wichita and said he was at the address provided by Viner, that he’d just shot his father in the head, was holding his mom and sister at gunpoint, and was thinking about burning down the home with everyone inside."

It is an absolutely reasonable and necessary response for the police to respond to such a threat with the level of force that they did.

I am extremely skeptical that other countries police would handle a potential murder/hostage situation like that by calmly walking to the door and asking if everything is ok. They would be foolish to do so.

Sorry about that!

It seems pretty likely to me that Steve Jobs was a high functioning sociopath. The line about how his demeanor changed dramatically when Carmack's wife asked for a favor was indicative to me.

"One time, my wife, then fiancée, and I were meeting with Steve at Apple, and he wanted me to do a keynote that happened to be scheduled on the same day as our wedding. With a big smile and full of charm, he suggested that we postpone it. We declined, but he kept pressing. Eventually my wife countered with a suggestion that if he really wanted “her” John so much, he should loan John Lassiter to her media company for a day of consulting. Steve went from full charm to ice cold really damn quick. I didn’t do that keynote."

I find sociopaths fascinating, but I would sure never want to work for one. It must take an incredible amount of calculation and self discipline to keep a semblance of normality for an incredibly high profile sociopath like Jobs.

On a side note, the late Pieter Hintjens of ZeroMQ wrote an excellent book about psychopaths available online for free here.

https://legacy.gitbook.com/book/hintjens/psychopathcode/deta....

Also want to disclaim that I am not a psychiatrist and my opinion of Job's sociopathy is only my speculation.

Ok I assumed that was the case. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm sure that this is a dumb question, but is methane from cows a contributor to global warming? Is that the significance of this study? Thanks.

I would agree with you on a lot of drugs. Definitely Marijuana for one thing.

However the thing that is less obvious about drug use is how it effects everyone around the user. I'm from a low income rural area in the south and had a close friend, and a sister who both became hooked on metamphetamine and opioids.

My sister absolutely destroyed her life. The drugs cost money, and a drug addict is not stable enough mentally or physically to hold a job. The only option is for them to commit crime. My sister lied to our family constantly, and stole from us.

A serious drug addict is like a tornado destroying everyone in their vicinity.

Maybe for light drugs like marijuana it is a cognitive issue, but for hard addictive drugs it is very much a societal and criminal issue. Drug addiction causes user to commit crime out of desperation. A drug addict will harm the community around them.

I wasn't trying start a political flamewar. I noted in parenthesis that Obama's use of this sort of analytics was less deceptive. I think that the link that CptJamesCook posted validates my original comment on this.
