Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @11:55AM (#50232937)
I think humans should be a bit more humble about the quality of their software, especially in light of all of the recent exploits. The connotation that AI = slop is played out, and will look foolish in another few years' time.
Re:Terence Tao: Math 2.0 [pdf] on Sunday October 11, 2026 @10:36AM (#50043758)
I'm learning so much about specific vs. generalized intelligence through this entire ordeal.
I put in the first few paragraphs, containing the sentences I quoted, and got 100% chance of AI fwiw. No human writes like that. "for the first time, it’s one the whole family actually enjoys using" Like, come on, the positioning of 'actually' alone here, just inventing a counterfactual, is such an obvious tell.
The AI-slop writing while talking about hiring a human to do the illustration...

"A flickering fireplace, a softly lit garden, and a smart home the whole family finally enjoys." "not only in my house, but in a hand-drawn picture of it"

Cost per token is an extremely naive way to index cost, renders this chart essentially meaningless.
Not only is it incredibly expensive for the intelligence provided, it's slow, overly verbose, and outright refuses its users all the time. The level of general hassle with Anthropic nowadays is not worth it...not to mention Claude's infuriating dialect.
Oof - thanks, appreciate it
For some reason HN keeps changing my URL when I post this article. Supposed to link to https://therentalwire.com/blog/home_prices_interest_rates_se...

But keeps changing it to https://therentalwire.com/#

If anyone has had a similar experience / knows how to resolve please let me know. It's just a simple static site hosted on Github pages but HN keeps replacing submission with root domain.

Good point re: Asia presence and agree they seem confident + have the balance sheet to back it up.

Overall would just be nice to see weekly splits of revenue from all these companies instead of the vague descriptors we're getting. Would be much easier to project worst case/Q2 that way.

Effects were also only included in ~2-3 weeks of Q1 earnings.
Re:How much free time do you have? on Friday July 05, 2019 @11:52PM (#20367689)
Author here - I find a lot of those mentioned personally enjoyable too, but what I was essentially trying to do was quantify my own 'must do' activities (e.g. if I don't sleep ~8hrs/night things go downhill fast, etc) regardless of whether or not I enjoy them.

From there, I view the remaining time as truly open, not requiring working, or general meat sack maintenance. Categorization can definitely go either way though. Part of the message, aside from just quantifying how limited time is, would be to find enjoyment where you can in your 'mandatory' activities too as they'll represent the bulk of your life.

Re:How much free time do you have? on Friday July 05, 2019 @11:43PM (#20367659)
Author here - I would consider my lifestyle intentionally laid back, yes (to the capacity I'm able to at least) :)

However, it's just a 4 day standard weight lifting routine (1 hr/day) but includes total time door to door (changing, commuting, lifting, commuting back). I enjoy this though, so aside from the mood/longevity benefits would do it anyways.

Article doesn't reference anything re: overall ad spend being down, just ad spend for newspapers specifically. Overall spend looks to be growing [1] so would assume people investing in more efficient channels.

I like how Boston Dynamics decided to monetize this YT video. Those robots don't pay for themselves
Great planet money podcast on this [1] with owner of site [2] that tries to surface fake reviews.

Yep - almost as scary as the stat that "40% of American adults can't cover a $400 emergency expense"[1]

Re:Ask HN: What was your best passive income in 2017? on Wednesday April 11, 2018 @06:38PM (#16816384)
I make ~$200-250/month with Find-me[1]. Essentially a database with statistics and contact information for content creators actively looking for advertisers/sponsorship opportunities.

Had a lot on the road map (creating more of a platform) but have pivoted to other projects since this doesn't seem to be getting the traction I was hoping for.

Also make ~$1.5k/year from old Udemy courses on pretty basic topics (beginner-level SQL, Google Sheets, etc).

Have been seeing similar overload of information on Reddit as well (HN not quite there yet, but would imagine it's not too far behind). The front page is littered with images/gifs of bite size information/memes. A few years ago, I'd learn something new almost every time I visited the front page.

I created a tool [1] that lets users aggregate top posts from selected subreddits and receive a daily email summary, but I think there can be more done in this space. Would also like a better discovery mechanism for things that I may be interested in that aren't obviously connected to current content (e.g. someone interested in programming may be interested in art as well, if fed nice introduction to that information/scene, but current algos just stick to known interests).

Have not been to a physical grocery store in over 6 months because of Amazon Prime Fresh. Would be willing to pay much more than I do now after being accustomed to saving so much time.
Here’s why I made Storyrake:

-I’m a fan of email newsletters, and use my inbox to curate/manage a good deal of content

-I subscribe to too many subreddits, so some of my favorites rarely make the front page due to lower traffic (and upvote) volumes.

-I wanted a snapshot summary covering top content from my favorite subreddits, without having to visit each individual subreddit or be bombarded with a stream of content through an RSS feed

Long-term, I’m planning to add ability to subscribe to summaries covering ‘topics’ on reddit (agnostic of the subreddit they are posted in), as well as a few additional sites (Hackernews, ProductHunt, etc).

Would love any feedback/suggestions!
