No one, it's just a toy language
I literally bought a mini PC, installed Arch with KDE via archinstall, installed chromium, and haven't done any "sysadmin" since.
Yes, it "just works". Why wouldn't it?
Thinking that Forgejo is a viable replacement for someone who uses GitLab is wild. It's a bit like telling someone to use cgit instead of Forgejo. (yes I know Alpine uses cgit as well)
Man are you OK? What are you even on about?
Woke is cringe, it's a settled matter, calm down buddy.
The entire industry right now seems to think otherwise :)

Literally nothing can be anything in absolute terms, what's your point? The fact is that Rust is miles better than any other language in terms of memory safety & performance ratio. That's all that matters.

You might want to dig a little deeper than CNN
What's the difference? As far as I can tell, Helium is just rebranded Ungoogled Chromium with pre-installed extensions or something.
I used VSCodium before and found it to be a massive waste of time for no benefit. A significant number of extensions either aren't in OpenVSIX (or whatever it's called), or don't work for some reason.
Just disable telemetry in VSCode and you're good.
Happy Ungoogled Chromium user though
Have you considered that maybe, just maybe, you can have both an easy path to your paycheck and care about software engineering? You also might have an incorrect definition of "software engineering" in mind
I constantly see those projects that would benefit from a screenshot in a readme, but for some reason the thought about adding one doesn't even come to the authors' mind, even though it's pretty obvious. I'd really like to know what's going on.
Because it's convenient, and the security of this doesn't matter for desktop usage.
OK... and? This doesn't matter for a desktop, because:
1. Having access to the user's home directory is way more serious than being able to install drivers or whatever
2. There are a million other ways to escalate to root by obtaining the user's password
I also don't understand the point of these distros, just install Arch with KDE via archinstall, it literally takes 15 minutes. Why is it that people feel the need to use someone's Arch setup?
Self-hosted GitLab and self-hosted GitLab Runners (Omnibus Docker image)
What world are you living in where Protobuf/gRPC are considered "legacy"? ..what?
For sure everyone will start using "weird and new" browsers that waste their time by breaking websites xD
Chromium is an open source project, forks such as Ungoogled Chromium exist, I literally had 0 issues with uBOL on Ungoogled Chromium.
People who complain about MV3 probably spent more time complaining about it than actually trying uBOL and seeing that it works just fine.
Why do you feel the need to label the content when the quality of the content will speak for itself?
It doesn't matter where the content comes from, only the quality/usefulness matters. If you are opposed to this idea, the next decades are going to be very tough for you :)
Why the downvotes? All of this is correct
No, it is part of the "I just want stuff to work" strategy
"The way you expect" is probably inconsistent and, upon closer inspection, completely broken.
There is a reason why systemd became the default and other niche init systems have faded into obscurity.
Sure, it may be more complex than your pile of shell scripts, but that's because it does the same things better, and has a lot more functionality that you will need at some point, and good luck replicating that by hacking shell scripts.
> Just like people practice martial arts even though we have guns.
The whole point of martial arts is the art itself.
The point of software isn't the process of creating software (it was never about that), it's the end result, and all people care about is that the end result is good. And if you don't like that, you can choose another industry.
1. Random dude self-hosts a Git instance
2. Gets mad that people he doesn't like DARE to sign up and use it
3. Announces that he won't allow people he doesn't like
4. Makes a big deal out of it like anyone cares
I dunno this is hilarious but pretty sad, the guy clearly has issues
Why would you write like that? Not capitalizing the first word of a sentence makes the whole thing less readable. So that you can feel special? Really?
That's all good until you discover that Forgejo is very barebones compared to GitLab, and you inevitably end up recreating GitLab featureset by using some scripts/addons from random people and pray it doesn't shit itself
Isn't it better to invest your time in setting up GitLab once and not have to deal with Forgejo being a toy project?
It literally takes 1 compose.yaml to self-host GitLab Omnibus, and 1 compose.yaml for the runner. You have been misled by suckless fans if you think that self-hosting GitLab is more complex than Forgejo.
> Last time I ran gitlab, it required oodles of memory - it's just me!
It requires what, 8GB of RAM? That's not "oodles" by any definition.
You can just self-host GitLab CE and use self-hosted ElasticSearch integration to set up code search. I really don't understand the point of Forgejo, sounds like making your life harder
You'd be surprised how easy it is to self-host GitLab with Docker Compose, GitLab has an official "Omnibus" Docker image. No need to handicap yourself with Gitea/Forgejo/whatever, you can just use an industry-standard platform without much effort.
Hardware requirements are nowhere close to high either.
