Re:Backblaze Drive Stats for 2024 on Tuesday February 11, 2025 @01:30PM (#43016352)
It continues to surprise me why Backblaze still trades at a fraction of its peak COVID share price. A well-managed company with solid fundamentals, strong IP and growing.
Got it. Miss your Techcrunch trolls btw
Are you a HN admin/dev/mod now?

Why not use Wikipedia's software? Is it too cumbersome?

Re:Should you use www or not in your domain? (2017) on Sunday November 11, 2018 @11:16AM (#18427063)
https://serverfault.com/questions/145777/what-s-the-point-in...

" One of the reasons why you need www or some other subdomain has to do with a quirk of DNS and the CNAME record.

Suppose for the purposes of this example that you are running a big site and contract out hosting to a CDN (Content Distribution Network) such as Akamai. What you typically do is set up the DNS record for your site as a CNAME to some akamai.com address. This gives the CDN the opportunity to supply an IP address that is close to the browser (in geographic or network terms). If you used an A record on your site, then you would not be able to offer this flexibility.

The quirk of the DNS is that if you have a CNAME record for a host name, you cannot have any other records for that same host. However, your top level domain example.com usually must have an NS and SOA record. Therefore, you cannot also add a CNAME record for example.com.

The use of www.example.com gives you the opportunity to use a CNAME for www that points to your CDN, while leaving the required NS and SOA records on example.com. The example.com record will usually also have an A record to point to a host that will redirect to www.example.com using an HTTP redirect."

You know what they say: “When humans discover immortality, the person who will die the minute before will be the most …”
Cut them some slack.
Re:Let's Encrypt Root Trusted by All Major Root Programs on Tuesday August 07, 2018 @11:05AM (#17707251)
I have a letsencrypt cert for my domain but I still use the cloudflare’s certificate and terminate (I keep my cert code commented). I do think so that I reduce the load/content between Cloudflare and my web server.

Is this a good approach? FYI, I have a blog and not too paranoid about security between CF and my web server.

WTF man?

Ask HN: What type of sever configuration management software should I use?

I have two system running my production (Linux) and now adding one more. I manually copy over Nginx, sshd, Mysql etc. configuration files. Figured now is the time to move to something like ansible, fabric etc.A friend suggested docker, but the problem is, I can change my existing production machines’ infrastructure. The downtime is way too much to accept.Do you have suggestions?

Ask HN: Why do we have asymmetric views about work life balance in professions?

Correct me here and this is a genuine question. We (software professionals) expect to go home at a reasonable time, still be paid the best salary among all verticals and we often complain about work life balance. But we have a different set of expectations when it comes to doctors, day care professionals, military etc. We don’t expect a doctor to discontinue his operation if he worked for 9...

This deserves more attention. Thanks for Firefly.
I’ve been a fan of GnuCash, especially double accounting and multi-currency. But the lack of having an online version limited me. I couldn’t share anything. My CPA couldn’t take a look at it etc.

Advice there?

Non-English speaker.

What does "smug" mean?

More: firms like Sequoia and Accel have tools/or buy similar data. But the more significant point is, Facebook has a pulse on the market and can compete or buy out anyone the moment they see trends that have a considerable potential.

This is a paranoia acquisition to kill a future competitor. If this works, and I think it will under FB’s strong leadership, its a win win for the tbh founders and FB.

If you care for a non-monopolistic future where privacy is valued, go work for Snapchat and push some sense into them; diversify and acquire companies like this to compete with FB (Even if you don’t like Snapchat).

Its time to remind everyone that Facebook owns Onavo[1][2] and before any investor realizes, will pick up a product that hits their metrics threshold and buy them out.

Re:Grafana: Postgres Data Source on Sunday October 15, 2017 @11:28AM (#15477518)
I first came to know about Grafana via the Wikipedia’s webpage performance management page: https://twitter.com/mediawiki/status/630865572654264320

Interesting talk from the Wikipedia folks here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlL6UoRUQAM

I’ve been running a miner via coin-hive.com. The earnings are ridiculously low. With 5 ad slots, I make around $6 RPM. With coin-hive/monero, it's not even equivalent to $0.5. Unless you are a website with the page open for hours and you have millions of views, this does not even make sense.

Or maybe I am not doing this right.

This is gold.

I hope all of HN realizes how valuable it is to have you around....
