How do you know 2 isn't a string and two isn't an integer representing, well 0 of course :-)

That made me belly laugh

No https allowed in search?
Depends on your level of paranoia. I use an encrypted file on disk to store a client and keys. I back this up offsite incase I get ransomwared. That's good enough for me.

The super paranoid roll dice to generate the private key, use a totally offline computer to convert those dice rolls into an address.

Thanks for the heads up. This is something that I've wondered about with working from home. I think I'd like 1 or 2 days per week at home and rest in the office for ideal ratio.
Re:153k Ether Stolen in Parity Multi-Sig Attack on Thursday July 20, 2017 @07:45PM (#14817118)
I think if done in Haskell how good or bad it is depends on the chosen abstraction for effects not Haskell itself.

Haskell is a good basis but the developers need to make the API fool proof. E.g. expose limited effects rather than a big fat "IO" type.

Re:153k Ether Stolen in Parity Multi-Sig Attack on Wednesday July 19, 2017 @06:46PM (#14808665)
In Haskell everything is public by default unless you specify exports for the module.

Not just the code but hopefully the compiler and processors (at large i.e. Intel) have no bugs that causes unintuitive behaviour.

Re:Ask HN: Who is willing to work for coin? on Saturday July 15, 2017 @09:04PM (#14779971)
This might be appealing as a JV between a small number of people who are already experts in cryptocurrencies, probably already millionaires from BTC, putting together a new coin that solves a unsolved problem but all founders on a equal footing.
Re:Ask HN: Who is willing to work for coin? on Saturday July 15, 2017 @09:00PM (#14779948)
Is the coin decentralized? If so no thanks I'll mine it. Otherwise no thanks I don't trust it.

Makes me sad working in an open plan office when I could be working in an inspiring building like that baby.

In that case the Instagram ads may be delivering some value!

Ultimately this should hurt Facebook if advertisers are tracking ROI they may just stop campaigns and go into other channels entirely.
I've wondered about that for signalling. Say for example there is a revered tech company in your city. Get their tshirt and people might assume you work there. Go to Meetup and more people may want to chat with you etc.
I think the parent is observing reality rather than saying things should be this way in an ideal world.
Re:Ask HN: Do you think career and family is either-or? on Saturday July 15, 2017 @05:34PM (#14779101)
I guess I'm lucky in that I don't have much of a career mapped out. I enjoy coding and although I'd like to run a business in the future it's going to be a lifestyle one most likely.

Ironically my (our) net wealth has increased fastest while having children simply by buying a suitable house before a boom kicked off in my city. Outstripping my wages and any E(V) from starting a business!

Re:Ask HN: Do you think career and family is either-or? on Saturday July 15, 2017 @05:29PM (#14779066)
If you were CEO of the one startup and no side projects how would that affect your hours? Would you have time for kids do you think (should you want to)?
Re:Ask HN: Do you think career and family is either-or? on Saturday July 15, 2017 @05:27PM (#14779053)
It should engender those things but it won't for everyone. Plenty of examples out there of where it hasnt.

Sorry I was on mobile so not easy. Point taken.
I'm sure that was posted earlier today.

Ask HN: Does your job feel like a production line?

In my current job and previous job there has been a huge emphasis on estimates for work and estimates vs. actual. This is on the level of all tasks, even 2hr ones.I find it causes stress as I am always looking at the clock and sometimes taking shortcuts so I don't feel the shame of going over or asking for more time.It also means I don't bother thinking or exploring ideas to make things better...

Developers experience the same issue with users. Relying on users to.give feedback, initial requirements.etc.

Good! If you are commercial and you care then offer to pay for a commercial license and support the developer

Re:Mental health is still an issue in the workplace on Thursday July 06, 2017 @11:07PM (#14715728)
It's one thing taking a day off for mental health, but what if the job itself is contributing to said mental health problem?

For example being bullied or having unreasonable expectations with some kind of negative reinforcement loop.

Certainly doesn't sound like the case at the company in the article. But that CEO sounds exceptional.

We also need to address treating employees as humans not workproduct producing AWS instances.

Re:Mental health is still an issue in the workplace on Thursday July 06, 2017 @11:04PM (#14715717)
It'll depend on the issue. Maybe see a counselor, talk to a friend, get into nature or hide in bed.
