i'm not sure how much more narcissistic the web2 crowd could get, but we'll take the post under advice!!
Re:What's a lifelong realtor to do in this economy? on Monday October 13, 2008 @01:27AM (#330798)
why are you asking a bunch of rookie programmers???
Re:No more depression posts, solve it instead on Sunday October 12, 2008 @06:56PM (#330546)
no, we are not the ones to "solve" it, because there is no button to push, method to be invented, or novel approach to making everyone solvent with web technology.

what we are, we're the people who will live with reduced wealth for decades to come. debt must be unwound and asset prices reverted to the mean. there is no shortcut. regimes that have taken shortcuts have ended violently. for example, monarchist france and weimar germany.

we are, ONCE AGAIN (like 2002), attempting to put off (inevitable) deflation with hyperinflation. or do you think pumping like $3 trillion globally into markets will have no impact on currencies? the dollar will not make it to 2025

what i think is even more worthy of a blog rant is goofs who buy systems with 8gb of ram then shit a brick any time they are using more than 10% of it
Re:How do I get in shape? Excercise Hack for Entrepreneurs on Thursday October 09, 2008 @05:27PM (#328295)
if you are doing cardio, you must sweat. this is the simplest rule for knowing if your workout is effective. its an easy rule to remember and works no matter what level of fitness you are at.

if you want the single best cardio/toning workout, i cannot recommend the rowing machine enough. if you think this is a lightweight cardio workout, my guess is that you have never tried it. the first two minutes are a joke...in ten minutes you won't think its a joke

otherwise running can't be beat. i do a trail marathon a month on avg. trail running is the shit.

Re:Sequoia Rings the Alarm Bell: Silicon Valley Is in Trouble on Thursday October 09, 2008 @01:04PM (#328018)
yeah like starting a website is real "out of the box" thinking in the bay area
Re:Sequoia Rings the Alarm Bell: Silicon Valley Is in Trouble on Thursday October 09, 2008 @01:03PM (#328016)
well if all you want is hosting fees and money for ramen, you don't need funding at all. just use your VISA.
Re:Sequoia Rings the Alarm Bell: Silicon Valley Is in Trouble on Thursday October 09, 2008 @01:02PM (#328014)
But does anyone know if the reason companies have not been IPOing?

because IPOs are risky, and people are avoiding risk

Re:Sequoia Rings the Alarm Bell: Silicon Valley Is in Trouble on Thursday October 09, 2008 @01:01PM (#328012)
even without the downturn, a reality check was coming. literally hundreds of little websites have been surviving due to only one factor: costs have dropped so low for producing a website that you can run it on poverty wages for years. in the 90s this wasn't the case...higher burn rates put more companies under quickly.

and the web economy is maturing in ways that just aren't friendly to small sites. google has become an accretion disc for all ad revenue that even other big websites can't compete with. the major sites are paying good wages to good talent...increasingly engineers will take $120k for 9-5 from yahoo over a lottery ticket and slave labor from a startup

the recession will just wake most "founder" types up to the reality that their payday will never emerge

Re:8 things you can do with a proxy on Wednesday October 08, 2008 @12:19PM (#326671)
using a proxy to block ads is still the way to go, far better than adblock. i use privoxy for this.

the big win is that every browser on your system now gets the same level of adblocking.

Re:Why not Io? on Monday October 06, 2008 @05:51PM (#325351)
afaik Io has major performance issues
Re:Taleb - the new sage of Wall Street | on Monday October 06, 2008 @01:51PM (#325132)
agreed, there was no black swan here. this was a simple debt implosion
Re:Taleb - the new sage of Wall Street | on Monday October 06, 2008 @01:19PM (#325109)
i'll explain this market for you all so you can understand it

DEBT UNWINDING

the world has flooded itself in debt, far more than any economic expansion or confidence can handle. there is always an inflection point where confidence in debt unravels. this is why even the govt can't stop the debt unwinding.

until a significant de-leveraging takes hold, all markets will stay in the toilet

for de-leveraging to take place, assets need to be repriced

we are now in a period i will call

THE GREAT REPRICING

all assets will be repriced. you see stocks reprice quickly now because they are the most liquid asset. bonds are next. houses will continue to fall. in the end, houses will fall by a minimum of 50%. i say this as a homeOWNER, i have already made peace with the fact that my home (in desirable bay area) will fall by 50%. in some places they have already fallen 50%

this is the exact experience of the japanese in the 90s. even 0% interest rates could not induce more consumption and debt. it took them TEN YEARS to work it off

Re:What if you could only move your eyeballs? on Monday October 06, 2008 @01:15PM (#325105)
just ask the really fat guy down the aisle
Re:EBay Lays Off 10%, announces 2 acquisitions on Monday October 06, 2008 @01:12PM (#325102)
they are chump-change acquisitions in the grand scope of ebay's market cap
Re:EBay Lays Off 10%, announces 2 acquisitions on Monday October 06, 2008 @01:11PM (#325101)
no, no one in the bay area lays off unless the street (stock) demands it.

the psychological impact of layoffs is the antithesis of growth, which all bay area companies are trying to project

if they didn't need to layoff, they would just put the excess headcount on cruise control, like google and yahoo do

sounds like notes with a new name and an integrated wiki

when you hear "lotus notes", RUN THE OTHER WAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN

anyone who has actually used it will agree

Re:Angel investor: Want my money? Here's my checklist on Monday October 06, 2008 @11:57AM (#325014)
ugh, here's a better idea, i'll self-fund so i don't have to indulge stupid cunts and the lists they scribbled down in the business section of barnes and noble

if things were nearly as much of a lock as this person demands, i sure as shit wouldn't have to slum it with angel funding, i could go to a marquee vc firm

Re:Herman Miller Embody - Aeron 2.0? on Monday October 06, 2008 @11:54AM (#325008)
I would also like to understand the role of the naked woman in the picture.

maybe your boyfriend can explain it to you

Re:Herman Miller Embody - Aeron 2.0? on Monday October 06, 2008 @11:54AM (#325006)
indeed! the aeron chair went from cool office tech to sad artifact from the collapse. amazingly i found someone who actually paid the retail list price for one.

the freedom chair owns it anyway

Re:EBay Lays Off 10%, announces 2 acquisitions on Monday October 06, 2008 @11:51AM (#325003)
layoffs are coming all over the bay area. whatever started with GOOG going public is now over in the markets. AAPL and GOOG are off 50% from the highs. YHOO is headed for 14 (congrats jerry, could of had 34). INTC is trading at levels from the 90s. and at least these companies can claim to be "in business". for the rest of the living-on-funding, maybe-one-day crowd, its time to read the tea leaves: the party is over
Re:Mono 2 released on Monday October 06, 2008 @11:48AM (#324999)
upmod if you tried mono, liked it, but just couldn't stand seeing files with .exe and .dll extensions on your linux box
Re:Suppose I wanted to write a C++ based web application... on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:57AM (#324140)
indeed. and lets remember that all of the built-ins in perl, php, python etc are written in c and compiled and optimized and debugged.
Re:Suppose I wanted to write a C++ based web application... on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:55AM (#324139)
and where are they now
Re:Suppose I wanted to write a C++ based web application... on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:54AM (#324138)
treat the c++ standard as an assembly language of sort, from which higher level langs are built, like boost. if you look at it this way, you can carve out a sane section and deal with it. if you try to hold the entirety of it in your head and code, its hell
Re:Suppose I wanted to write a C++ based web application... on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:52AM (#324137)
the time you save is definitely worth $3k
Re:Washington Is Quietly Repudiating Its Debts on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:41AM (#324129)
the $25 trillion point is pure speculation. i merely suggest this as a tipping point
Re:The Macbook "Brick" on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:39AM (#324128)
GO BACK TO VALLEYWAG
Re:The Macbook "Brick" on Sunday October 05, 2008 @11:38AM (#324127)
i can safely say that you, seeking not performance but "keybaord stability" in a laptop, are a market of one. its so sad to see the fanbois try to justify their iSlavery, almost like a battered wife telling the judge she reaaaallyyyy stiiiill loooooves hiiiim.
Re:Washington Is Quietly Repudiating Its Debts on Sunday October 05, 2008 @01:41AM (#323909)
inside the USA, treasury notes cannot default. by a 1982 law they can just create an account at a fed member bank and assign it to the payee.

the issue is whether these dollars are worth anything

i would argue that if the US debt hits $25 trillion, its over. the dollar will die and with it the US govt.
