Re:I dumped Windows 11 for Linux, and you should too on Sunday January 11, 2026 @10:37AM (#46576628)
This has been my issue as well - screens waking or not waking up. On latest Linux Mint and everything is great except when switching back and forth inputs between my personal and work laptop (running Windows), I have to do it twice going to my personal laptop or else the external monitor won't show.
They also tend to have higher fees and a smaller return than managing it yourself with index funds and bonds. But for people that don't want to do that it is a good option none the less.
Re:Show HN: Check Supply – Send Checks in the Mail on Monday February 03, 2025 @11:13AM (#42919698)
Actually at a previous company we had to use a service that did exactly this because we had to send money to various businesses and they didn't all have ACH/etc setup. So we had to use a relatively archaic service and API to send out physical checks. Not sure how big of a market it is, but there is definitely a need at least on the business side.
Re:Show HN: Check Supply – Send Checks in the Mail on Monday February 03, 2025 @11:11AM (#42919669)
There are savings account setups that do offer separate accounts for various buckets that do something like this - it may not be daily, but monthly or bi-weekly. I use smartyPig for this and it really is helpful. More helpful than just budgeting but still having the money sitting in the account.
Re:Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment? on Saturday December 28, 2024 @01:53PM (#42533428)
In the last couple of weeks we posted a job for a junior .NET dev and got over 800 resumes within days. The automation is killing both the employer having to sift through it all and the employee possibly getting lost in the mix.
I do wonder how much affect it has. At least in the US most insurance companies won't cover them (unless you already have diabetes, for example) and at over $1,000 a month I can't see how the people who could really benefit from this to lower the numbers can possibly afford it.
These are FAANG monies. The rest of the US normals (which is the vast majority) don't have these stock options and thus that kind of money.
Re:Windows Recall: Microsoft has lost trust with its users on Thursday June 06, 2024 @04:52PM (#40602268)
Notepad++ ...There are alternatives, but none that save the current session (including unsaved files). The best option was to run it through Wine, but that seems overkill for a notepad style app.

And thats my beef every time I switch to Linux, I come back to Windows because the apps in Windows are there and it just works. I used Linux Mint for a year, but it was a lot of finding similar but not quite as good apps as what I would use on Windows.

Re:BASIC turns 60 on Wednesday May 01, 2024 @01:03PM (#40226060)
Let's see my BE language progression went from...

Apple Logo->Commodore BASIC->Fortran->Pascal->PHP->Java->VB6->.NET...and other modern things.

...With scripts of various types mixed in there. But BASIC is what got me hooked. Being able to write my own games on the Commodore 128 was fantastically addicting. Leaving demo store Commodore's flashing background colors with POKE 53281 and looping around felt like I was the king of the world.

I'm so old phreaking was the only way for me to communicate with people outside my area through BBSs on my C64.
Re:Home Lab Beginners guide on Friday March 08, 2024 @09:36AM (#39641400)
Unless you simply want to play with all the various bits of hardware, a standard PC tower will be more power efficient and save a lot of room. I use that with unRaid and a simple router and switch and it's power efficient, doesn't make much noise, cheaper, and takes up much less room.
Re:I'm Done Punching Trees and Grabbing Rocks in Video Games on Friday February 02, 2024 @09:55AM (#39229238)
So much this. I used to love playing games as a kid, but now I watch game demos now and all it looks like to me is work. Someone/thing telling me to go do this and that. Keep track of all my work so I can be assigned more of it. I might as well just go code something.
Re:AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT Linux Performance on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @10:50AM (#39118756)
It doesn't mention (or I missed it), but I wonder what the idle power usage is on these. I know with Nvidia cards you can run nvidia-persistenced to keep it in a lower power state on idle, not sure what to do with AMD cards (if anything is needed).
Linked from the reddit post, this article (though US specific) has much more data that uses median vs average and breaks down by region..

Re:Surf the web like it's 1999 on Friday January 19, 2024 @01:52PM (#39059445)
Similarly check out https://protoweb.org/about/. They dont have every site, but they also include a fun 'antique' youtube where you get to stream with Real player or windows media player to bring back the 'greatness' of those products.
There were great shows then and great shows now. The problem now is the good ones get lost in the sea of a million streaming services dishing out whatever they can to justify their cost, so it may just seem like it used to be better.
Re:iPhone Survives 16,000-Foot Fall from Alaska Air Flight on Monday January 08, 2024 @11:37AM (#38914517)
I was in Costa Rica taking an aerial tramway which was about 75 ft up over dirt/rocky hill and my Pixel 6a (with just a basic back case) fell out of my pocket, hit the metal floor and fell out the doorway. The very kind tour people actually went and found it and returned it with not even a scratch on it. Not exactly 16,000 ft, but I was still amazed and felt very lucky. The only damage was my wife being right that I should have put a strap on it.
I built a similar thing and found it to add qualifications quite often, especially when you had it write a cover letter. It was still helpful though, just like with every use case you need to check what ChatGPT is telling you.
Re:I forked SteamOS for my living room PC on Sunday December 31, 2023 @04:29PM (#38827672)
Good call out - this does require a dummy plug as well.
Re:I forked SteamOS for my living room PC on Sunday December 31, 2023 @10:52AM (#38824860)
I actually just ordered a GPU for my unRaid NAS server just to be able to do Steam Headless via a nice docker image(1) and then use Moonlight (for example) as a client on my Windows laptop. If it works, it's much better than buying yet another piece of desktop hardware just to play games when my NAS is just sitting there idle most of the time. Just need to make sure I keep the power level setting on the Nvidia card to idle when not in use (hopefully a nvidia-persistenced call will do it).

Yes, you can try it as a Premium member. I didn't try it on any 3-hour long videos, but for a couple of shorter ones it worked well enough to give a tl;dr;.
Re:Plan for Windows 10 End of Support on Friday December 08, 2023 @07:33PM (#38576902)
Oct 2025, by that time Windows 12 will come out and we can continue the skip every other Windows OS cycle.

I'd love to know what happened there. They used to be on their unreliable list for years.

Re:Bitwarden Adds Support for Passkeys on Wednesday November 01, 2023 @03:56PM (#38104020)
So it's browser extension only? I can't use the android app to login with a passkey I stored from my desktop browser? Hopefully they'll add that support soon enough, because password access on my mobile is a big pain point.
Re:Domain Registrars Which Developers Recommend on Monday September 11, 2023 @11:19AM (#37468601)
It is amazing, for the base concept of the Internet being a decentralized network to survive outages, how much centralization has occurred. I use a separate registrar (porkbun in my case), with that thought in mind.
Re:Emoji Generator with AI on Friday September 08, 2023 @10:28AM (#37433941)
Based on some of these, it seems 'AI' still just can't figure out fingers.
Re:Run Every Day on Tuesday August 01, 2023 @02:27PM (#36960249)
While I agree with getting out there and getting the heart rate up to provide both physical and mental health benefits I'm way too leery of repeated high impact activities on 'delicate' joints like my knees. I'd much rather hike, bike, row, etc.
Re:Enjoy Alcohol, Without the Hangover on Saturday July 29, 2023 @11:22AM (#36921134)
I have been on the hunt for the past year in the mid-atlantic area of the US looking for <4% beers. The closest I've come is a German grapefruit beer (Schöfferhofer), but it doesn't really have that beer taste. Most US 'light' beers are around 4-4.2%.

Moosehead for example makes a Moosehead Light for the states at 4%, but they also offer Cracked Canoe which is only 3.2% but not sold in the states (available in the Canada, UK and Costa Rica of all places where I tried it).
