Re:Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2024) on Friday August 02, 2024 @12:45PM (#41140402)
This is a great idea. As someone originally from Latin America, I would definitely use it. Too bad I'm not in London to apply. Best of luck!
Re:Ask HN: What are you doing this weekend? on Saturday September 24, 2022 @11:20AM (#32963488)
Enabled email bounces for non-existing accounts on newsletterss.com. Server costs are increasing each month at rate higher than new users.

Around noon, once it gets a bit warmer, I'll go with the family on a hike to see the fall foliage.

I've been working on Newsletterss, a newsletter reader for web, iOS and Android. I'm making about $2k/m with about 30% of that going to ads and infrastructure costs.

You can check it out at https://newsletterss.com

The Pragmatic Engineer is a very good blog/newsletter I've came across recently, highly recommended. https://www.pragmaticengineer.com/
Re:Ask HN: Where can I live off 1k USD per month? on Thursday August 26, 2021 @05:21PM (#28320971)
I just came back from 2 months in Colombia with my wife and a 3 year old. You can definitely live off 1k USD in an intermediate city (not Bogota) with a very high living standards compared to the average colombian.

Medellin would be my recommendation, very safe, unbeatable weather, access to high speed internet, a trendy startup culture and decent level of English-speaking people, non-stop daily flights to major US cities and same time zone as the US.

Re:TurboTax Tricked You into Paying to File Your Taxes (2019) on Thursday February 11, 2021 @11:18AM (#26103322)
Honest question, how is lobbying different from bribery? Lobbyists go to Washington, spend fortunes on taking lawmakers to fancy dinners and then get away with what they want. Maybe I don't understand the process and am oversimplifying it, but that's how I see it.
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? on Thursday January 14, 2021 @06:13PM (#25784336)
I'm building https://newsletterss.com a newsletters reader that started as a tool that I wanted to build for my own and I felt like turning it into a side project.
Re:Verizon to Sell Tumblr to Automattic on Monday August 12, 2019 @04:54PM (#20679898)
For me the most important aspect of this acquisition is that Automattic is a fully remote company. Tumblr's office space in New York City must be very expensive, I wonder if they're getting rid of it and transition everyone to remote.
Re:First .dev Domains Go Live on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @02:59PM (#19202223)
Oh, interesting, yes this is "mauritius" in Spanish a not so common name. I didn't know this, thank you for pointing it out. I guess that list is recent as mauricio.com and mauricio.co belongs to regular people and are currently working.

Do you happen to have a link to said list? A quick googling returned nothing relevant for me.

Re:First .dev Domains Go Live on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @01:17PM (#19201324)
Nah, it says "Unavailable" on Gandi. It seems that somebody paid full price, although it is not operative => mauricio.dev
Re:First .dev Domains Go Live on Tuesday February 19, 2019 @12:23PM (#19200749)
Mine is not available either and I doubt someone paid $11,500 for an Italian name with the dev extension. How come? My guess is some providers are "reserving" them.
This is my most disliked feature as well and it causes the opposite, inconvenient effect for me: I add to my playlist a movie or show that I want to watch in the future, days later, I go back to my list and it takes me an unnecessary extra amount of cognitive effort to find the same item because it had a different thumbnail back when I first added it. So irritating.
Re:AWS Outposts: Run AWS infrastructure on-premises on Wednesday November 28, 2018 @01:52PM (#18554421)
Where can I find the full list of products being released during AWS re:Invent? I haven't been able to find it, if there is such thing.
Re:Y Combinator is accepting applications for S18 on Monday January 22, 2018 @03:00PM (#16207384)

  4. If we invest in you, your group is expected to move to
the Bay Area for June–August 2018.

  6. Y Combinator doesn’t supply office space. We have space
you can use if you need to, but we expect you to work out
of wherever you find to live.
Why is it so important to be in the Bay Area? I get that for some interactions it'd be ideal to be there, but I don't see the need for a team to actually move there.

"drivers would not have to pay if they entered Manhattan
by all but two of the city-owned East River bridges,
which are now free to cross, as long as they bypassed
   the congestion zone."
I don't think I understand this part. Why would you have to pay if you "bypass the congestion zone"? no matter where you're coming from. Now, if what this means is that you don't have to pay the $11.52 fee after having already paid the $15 (if you pay cash) for the toll fee coming from New Jersey, makes sense.
Re:Artwork Personalization at Netflix on Sunday December 17, 2017 @10:13PM (#15949132)
My thoughts exactly as how much confusion this causes. It has happened to me several times that I'm scanning the catalog for a movie that my graphic memory had previously located, just to end up frustrated at first for not being able to find it and angry after realizing Netflix simply decides to A/B test the artwork.

This is like having a vinyl music collection made up of hundreds of items where the covers change randomly. Please Netflix, stop doing this.

This is very similar to what RoboKiller[1] does but with a lot more friction and less features.

Re:Ask HN: Which companies give programmers offices? on Thursday August 10, 2017 @10:49AM (#14980249)
Stack Overflow has blogged about their private offices for developers many times before. This is a post from 2015, I'm not sure if that's still the case: https://stackoverflow.blog/2015/01/16/why-we-still-believe-i...
Re:iPhone 7 on Wednesday September 07, 2016 @03:14PM (#12446294)

The high-gloss finish of the Jet Black iPhone 7 is
achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and
polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as
other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine
may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are
concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many
cases available to protect your iPhone.[1]
I think I'd go for the Black one instead.

Re:GitHub Security Update: Reused Password Attack on Thursday June 16, 2016 @08:00AM (#11915509)
My guess is that all affected accounts are those that had multiple successful and/or unsuccessful login attempts coming from the same source.

Re:Stripe Atlas on Wednesday February 24, 2016 @10:17AM (#11167317)
We have already incorporated and has been a long and painfull process, but not as painfull as trying to open an account at Silicon Valley Bank. After some back and forth, they rejected our application saying:

I’ve just received your info from client support and my
apologies if no one replied to you sooner.
Unfortunately we won’t be an appropriate banking fit as
we don’t typically bank service providers. We maintain
a focus on venture backed companies and typically teams
that are local to our presence (based in Silicon
Valley, SF Bay Area, NYC, Boston, London).
Just signed up for the beta, pretty excited about this!
It could be done at the airport level. If your last known departure was from point A, how did you get here with an aircraft that is not suited to fly such long distance. Not only that, you shouldn't have been allowed to depart from point A to begin with.

But again, I thought that something similar already existed. Today I learned, that it doesn't.
