Re:"I'm on a War Footing": Terry Tao and the Crisis in Math on Sunday October 18, 2026 @07:47PM (#50146699)
I know he says he’s ant talk a human about the proof, but why can’t he talk to ChatGPT?

Is the cost prohibitive , or a proprietary model?

Most people on my project are too. But honestly Claude has gotten good and for 100 dollars of tokens the code is more readable than a humans and I prefer to review it.

For what it’s worth a lot of the code in my company is similar in scope and style. Our design documents are very very thorough and catch edge cases .

I’m not in an ic role anymore but I do feel sad about the loss of handwritten code. It hits at my identity.

As for the article it feels like this is an abuse of ai and is being used for executive cover.

Arguably, it would have happened regardless of who was in power. I do not think Clinton did anything to stop it.

You are right though, the damage is unbelievable and it is heartbreaking.

I could see a republican administration banning this entirely, though they would just find cheaper workers in the U.S.

I wonder when this comes from other white class jobs— process engineering, autocad drafter, electronics design.

What’s interesting here is that it’s easy to see who is a corporate shill lobbyist and who is looking out for the concerns of the public.
I usually do not agree with her but I do here. There is a lot of nervousness where I live that the power rates will rise to support the build out in infra for data centers.

After working in tech I know they really are only in it to maximize profit at any expense necessary, and I personally do not trust them.

If you want buid out data centers fine, but build brand new infrastructure and supply your own water and waste management to not harm the existing community.

These companies are making billions and should be able to do this.

If a border patrol agent downloads your data, including data you have copyrighted, is that illegal ?
I suspect the truth is, that in a war of equal super powers, the winner will decide what was ethical and right.
I wish this weren’t the case but autonomous ai warfare is the future. We should accept that fact. Likely attribution for war crimes will be hard to pin down responsibility for.
This is just the beginning.

When autonomous weapons are deployed the scale will be too large and no one can be held accountable to prosecute like Nuremberg.

Personally I have my own opinions here about moral obligations but it is best to keep those to myself.

What’s your main issue ? The compliance audit being lax or the compliance not being assertive enough ?
PCI compliance works pretty well.

I would like to see restricted access to only us workers for us citizens data though.

Transferring us customer data outside the country should be illegal

Your tax consultants name is Claude ?
Dumb question— why doesn’t proof proposal construction (not the solution) in lean get celebrated more ? That seems central to understanding.

If these proofs are so important why is there not a central repositories of the proposal in a formalized language ?

It’s not the execs, it’s the economic pressures. If they don’t cut cost someone else will.

For the record I feel like I dm in your position also.

I completely understand and respect that , but the reality is that the U.S. governments opinion matters, even if you don’t like the leadership.
The correct name depends on your context. I know it’s unpopular but it’s true.
Re:Everything You Do Is Being Recorded on Monday August 10, 2026 @06:35AM (#49241891)
It gets it wrong a lot and is automated. How would you feel about being falsely accused or misunderstood ?

Also, it lays the groundwork to absolutely crush dissent in the future .

Re:Our position on open-weights models on Monday July 27, 2026 @10:46PM (#49078647)
True. It has been a race to the bottom for lowest cost as long as the quality meets the bare minimum. LLMs can go through and find all the nails sticking out pretty easily.
Yes, they scan your photos and text and look for reasons to report you to a government agency. They can completely misinterpret or fabricate what you have with no real controls other than good faith.

For somethings I think they are legally obligated to do this. It is creepy.

Re:Our position on open-weights models on Monday July 27, 2026 @09:07PM (#49077959)
I have been, yes. For a field that has engineering in the name there sure has been a lot of critical mistakes.

You have to call a spade a spade — the profession accepts this sort of tradeoff in the name of speed and cost.

A well designed system would have never allowed those mistakes to occur. I feel like using an llm to catch these sorts of things is just because it wasn’t built right in the first place.

I think ai systems will be able to build systems of abstraction that are formally verified, and we won’t be needed(eventually).

Right now it’s being used as a bandaid.

Re:Our position on open-weights models on Monday July 27, 2026 @08:31PM (#49077678)
The software industry should be ashamed by the number of exploits that ai can find in software. It’s really an embarrassment.

The software has to be built better.

Re:Kimi K3 exploited the latest Redis server on Monday July 27, 2026 @08:01PM (#49077386)
Not always, it can be run at static code analysis or the container repository (not the prod one)?
Re:Our position on open-weights models on Monday July 27, 2026 @07:53PM (#49077299)
At the end of the day it hurts U.S. consumers to not have Chinese cars mainstream in the market. We lose out on features and stagnate on innovation because we are not pushed to compete.

I can’t imagine this would be any different — banning open weight models would hurt us in the long run. The point is to beat the competition, not suppress it.

This article feels like fear mongering and hides protectionslism as the main objective. There should be no limits on open or custom models.

I am curious… why can’t distillation be stopped?

As a side not Im not against protectionism, but it has to be across the board and the same in all industries with no excrptions. We’ve let all these industries die on the vine due to cheap cost in foreign countries. It could very well happen to ai.

This is the real answer to the op.

It’s incredible how overblown these sorts of things can become

Yes— they spy on every pic and text upload. They literally are big brother.
You mean mortars ?
Seems like the reshaping of an industry and is disconcerting for those of us who work in it.
Yeah, I agree. It will be like serverless but for code : codeless.

It’s a disconcerting future.

Does anyone know why we write code anymore? Why not pass through to an llm that generates the page on the fly (ssr)?

Is it cost ?
