new promise: Firefox for Android, underinvestment in UX you'll definitely hate and 12 potential extensions exclusively approved by a committee of parasitic boomers too far gone to be competitive on the contemporary labour market.
Absolute garbage. However way this cut, one team or otherwise, they clearly didn't have the SLIGHTEST clue about the primary value prop of their main product for its users. Today's Mozilla is organizationally incompetent, and I genuinely worry (user for decades) that this time it truly is beyond rescue. That the situation on Android has persisted for almost a year already tells you all you need to know: Mozilla appears not to even possess the nervous system to respond to the obvious pain and misery of its users from that disastrous Android UI rewrite. They seem utterly deaf and dumb, almost like it were already a cadaver. Reminds me of Yahoo
Looks like a nice effort though. Is this some problem specific to 21.04 kernel config?
Pulseaudio burning CPU during silence is usually due to an application holding open a channel that is either really playing silence or is keeping the Pulseaudio machinery awake. You could blame the apps, but IMHO that is definitely a Pulseaudio problem
The Internet as some amoral ocean of voluntarily accessed objective knowledge is such an unbelievably naive old meme by now that it is extremely disappointing to still see it crop up on HN. Humans have sorely limited attention bandwidth, and we live in a world where every bad actor (including even the Taliban https://old.reddit.com/r/MalangKhostay/ ) has learned how to game attention to push every manner of ideological garbage down our throats in tiny increments. As an adult it's almost impossible to avoid falling prey to influencing tactics on a daily basis, why would we expect children to be more adept at navigating a global and almost completely unregulated media machine?
From this perspective, we have flat UI for essentially the same reason we're starting to see the formation of tech unions. It has been a long time since a lot of our industry has done anything new or even productive, and much of what we do is entirely self-serving, creating a kind of fragility that ultimately threatens the workforce. Endless UI churn producing worse and worse designs isn't a problem, it's a symptom that is impossible to ignore.
Would be interested in the logic here, given that it runs counter to what I thought was extremely obvious advice by now.
Defrag generates writes to rearrange blocks in the _virtual_ view of storage visible to the OS, but even after defragmentation, the _physical_ placement is totally outside the control of anything except the firmware. If after defragmentation a file's blocks are arranged (0, 1, 2, 3) in the OS-visible view, in flash are still very likely to to be arranged (412, 77, 1, 12341, 5) etc. All you can do is let it know that some range of sectors is not used, which is what TRIM enables, and that does not require defragmentation upfront.
edit: defending this a bit since it seems the negativity isn't warranted. The build that broke extensions and rearranged the entire UI was pushed as an automatic update with no warning. The last update on the AMO blog about this state of affairs is from 8 months ago. This was a huge breakage done without warning and nothing seems to have been done to resolve it in the interim.
If you're just tuning in, addons were about 80% the reason to use Firefox on mobile at all. Now there is a committee to approve which extensions are permitted on mobile to "protect the experience", when previously open ended access to extensions literally was the entire experience.
- was it over a LAN or WAN?
- how were the latency improvements measured?
- was there a UI on the front end or was this strictly a backend to backend scenario
Folk like this are precisely how Mozilla ended up replacing Eich with a parasitic CEO who immediately proceeded to destroy the business. Society's strength lies in managing and celebrating differences, not myopic, totalitarian uniformity. Folk like this are far worse for society than any temporary (and likely unenforceable) regulation, in one conservative region of an increasingly backwater nation trapped in what appears to be a permanent state of civil decay.
2006 era JS was more than sufficient to build out highly maintainable 100k+ LOC codebases, all this stuff does is introduce new variations of the same functionality for almost no benefit. Javascript is no longer a small language. I think the only surviving practical small language is Lua, and it's only remained small because the hoards are yet to turn up and bulldoze its original design with infinite feature requests
There are no destructive edits in Lightroom unless you really go out of your way to cause the destruction
It also has client-side face recognition / clustering which relies on a local database, indexing by geographic location for GPS-tagged images, etc.
Essentially nobody needs Lightroom until they try it, after which it easily becomes impossible to live without and there is no replacement
187k seemed quite expensive, the file actually drops to 49k with Brotli and removing whitespace.
Sorry if this put a backend team out of a job, but I definitely approve of this design. The other number normalization defects could just as easily be fixed client-side
For those reasons the linked monstrosity seems at best a torture device, and its operator is far from suited to owning animals
There is definitely a cute and innocent side to the furries particularly among younger folk, it seems for many there is no sexual element to it at least initially. It'd be a much happier world if the two were more easily separable, but even then the question would remain whether the gentler group acted as a pathway for the uglier group. That both exist undifferentiable and intermingled in the same spaces is extremely problematic, and a priority issue for those folk to solve.
In the early gay community it was also the case that desires for otherwise healthy and innocent rights were abused to mask much more insidious causes. Today it is unlikely you'd see homosexuality and paedophilia mentioned in the same breath without provoking a surprised response, but relatively recently that perception was still common. I think this is probably a good parallel to where furries are now
Sexually developed adults suffering from age or species dysphoria and ultimately demanding rights to match their self image is something that should not be encouraged in civil society, as those rights are inextricably linked to an implied requirement for consent which cannot be given.
It might be tempting to try and draw a line between the kind of folk above and the folk from the video, but I find that difficult given the variety of clearly sexually exaggerated avatars on display. The one that sticks most in mind being a fox with a pair of impractically large breasts.
SQLite is wonderful, but it's definitely not a replacement for CSV
This is an intentional and politically motivated conflation, that I notice you have attempted in several different threads, and it's why I replied here at all. Sex is a hard attribute that can be measured empirically at the chromosomal level, stop attempting to redefine it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex
