I thought so too when I bought a beefy iMac Pro in 2017. But then guess what, new CPU architecture and 10 years down the line it's not supported anymore. Yes I can stay on whatever OS was last supported, but the tools also start ditching support slowly. For example, Rust no longer has tier 1 support for x86_64-apple-darwin so it's a matter of time when things will start breaking.

I am quite sure Apple will think of a reason to deprecate my M1 Macbook Pro (which works great BTW!) in a couple of years, at which point I'm switching back to Linux and will not be coming back. I'm tired of accumulating perfectly good hardware in my house which is nerfed by lack of software updates.

No this was in the UK.
Re:Monitors for Work on Sunday August 09, 2026 @02:44AM (#49228998)
16pt is huge on this monitor, fits too few code lines on screen. 18 is almost headline sized.

But anyway doing these acrobatics is not what a professional should be doing in 2026.

Re:Monitors for Work on Sunday August 09, 2026 @02:39AM (#49228973)
No, just normal font sizes, macOS. 14pt looks huge, had to lower it to 12pt to look physically about the same as 14pt on a 4K/5K 27”, but at that physical size it’s a blurry mess due to low ppi.

Edit: Oh I misread your comment as 6 pixels large, not 6 pixels wide. Yes, you’re correct.

Yeah I’m on macOS.
Re:Monitors for Work on Saturday August 08, 2026 @05:00PM (#49225872)
Just started a new remote contracting gig and did a one-week on-site “getting to know each other” thing. I was shocked that everyone in the office had dual 27” 1080p monitors. Didn’t know they even made 1080p monitors that big!

Anyway after a week of staring at that blurry mess I was having eye focusing issues every night trying to read a book. Those monitors should be treated as ergonomic hazard. Total disgrace.

vkQuake.app works great on Apple silicon Macs.

Just went there to check it out, it opened the front page in Russian(?) for me, even though English was selected in the top right. I re-selected English, it refreshed the page... in Russian. Close tab.

Can we stop upvoting these clumsily disguised adguard marketing posts? It’s annoying: https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=adguard.com

An experimental weather forecast visualization app: https://brutalism.rs/project/itinerant/

Thank you, I appreciate it! :) There's https://kev.town/raymarching-toolkit/ but I haven't tried it. Looks promising!
Re:Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app on Thursday April 11, 2019 @05:26PM (#19639402)
No library, I wrote the SDF/raymarching shaders from scratch. But there are libraries out there...
Re:Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app on Thursday April 11, 2019 @05:25PM (#19639391)
I’m using DarkSky which gives you 1000 requests per day for free, and beyond that the pricing is quite reasonable.
Re:Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app on Wednesday April 10, 2019 @07:08AM (#19623498)
I'm considering it!

Thanks! :) By all means do, we need more playful software if you ask me!
Re:Itinerant – a fuzzy weather forecast app on Tuesday April 09, 2019 @07:02PM (#19619858)
I'm not sure, although I developed this in Unity so I imagine it would be a lot of jumping through hoops to get there... (upvote for the pun :D)
