Re:About Rx Kids on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @08:26AM (#49257197)
My brain is so off, I genuinely thought this was something to explain reactive streams to kids :(
+1 to Linear being fantastic. At this point, my biggest gripe with it (in comparison to Pivotal Tracker) is that I cannot put a limit on how many issues can exist in a certain state. Tracker used to do this very well with velocity.

I'd be very happy if I could set a max limit of 5 on the "todo" state of a certain team. Helps a lot with prioritization and poorly done planning.

Re:Ask HN: Which DNS based ad blocker do you suggest? on Friday March 13, 2026 @02:51AM (#47361402)
I love NextDNS (https://nextdns.io) and I've been paying for it for many years.

My only complaint is that on macOS, I cannot automatically turn the service off on certain wifi networks. This feature exists on the iOS app but is strangely missing on the macOS app.

Re:Ask HN: How much time do you spend reading books? on Friday November 07, 2025 @03:53AM (#45844679)
You can read a lot if you read things you enjoy, instead of things you feel you ought to read as a goal/achievement.

I used to read a lot in high school and then lost the habit as I went through undergrad. The way I got back into it was by ignoring best sellers and hype titles and the feelings of "I should read this because all my hacker friends keep referring to it".

I started reading a lot more fiction, especially stories from my country and culture. I stopped forcing myself to finish books that bored me. And because this is expensive to do, I bought physical books from a used books store instead of 1-click-buys on my Kindle.

Eventually, this built enough reading muscle for me that I moved to reading more ambitious things and I was able to persevere longer and battle through some really boring stuff (on topics that I cared about).

The two most popular options are Docusaurus and Material MkDocs:

They're both used by hundreds of open source projects, are pretty easy to set up, and use markdown for content so you shouldn't have any trouble.

Re:Ask HN: What are some of your favorite documentaries? on Thursday October 16, 2025 @09:02AM (#45604804)
The trilogy of design-related documentaries by Gary Hustwit! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_Trilogy

1. Objectified (on the design of objects)

2. Helvetica (on the design of typefaces)

3. Urbanized (on the design of cities and urban spaces)

It doesn't completely fit your needs (does anything?), but I really like Outline (https://www.getoutline.com/) especially because stuff like Notion and Confluence feels so slow and bloated.
Re:Apple pulls iPhone torrent app from AltStore PAL in Europe on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @01:19AM (#45099391)
This is a fine example of "chit bhi meri, pat bhi meri" which in Hindi translates to "heads I win, tails I win".
Re:Apple App Store Review Mess on Friday August 29, 2025 @02:02PM (#45067408)
It is a mess and it is a pain, so most people just keep resubmitting their apps for review. The idea is to get your app in front of multiple reviewers and hope that at least one of them reads the instructions and does the right thing.

Re:ASK: Could AI Replace the Slush Pile Intern? on Tuesday August 12, 2025 @03:08AM (#44873276)
I don't know if an LLM could make such a judgement "a lot better" in comparison to an intern, but maybe it can be used in a more useful manner? For e.g. maybe it is valuable for an LLM to tell the agency "67% probability of being similar to the mid-performing books of the last 2 years".
Re:Ask HN: How do startups create fancy websites? on Monday June 02, 2025 @08:56PM (#44165100)
Customizing off the shelf designs for Webflow and Framer is quite common.

Also FastSpring.com
Mataroa (https://mataroa.blog) is simple, to the point, blazing fast, open source, and just US$ 9 per year. It's quite barebones, but IMHO the platform's philosophy lends itself well to the cause of "I just want to write, I don't want to spend time fiddling with settings and templates".

I wrote about my experience when I migrated to it: https://pratul.net/blog/mataroa-just-works-for-me/

Apart from the resources in the other comments, I also benefited greatly by understanding the theory and principles behind CI and CD.

The Continuous Delivery (2010) book is a good place to start, along with Accelerate (2018).

The Phoenix Project (2013) is a fun read, inspired in many ways by The Goal (1984) which although fantastic, is quite a dry read.

https://trunkbaseddevelopment.com/ is a great resource and entirely free to read online.

Might not be relevant to you, but I work with mobile apps so “Continuous Deployment of Mobile Software at Facebook” (2016) was quite insightful: https://research.facebook.com/publications/continuous-deploy...

Re:Virtualizing iOS on Apple Silicon on Tuesday October 08, 2024 @04:52AM (#41775148)
> But in 2015 with the introduction of the iPad Pro, Apple decided that the iPad was going to replace the Macintosh.

Although that is an intriguing (and controversial) possibility, Apple has never explicitly stated that. What they have done, is continued to heavily invest in the Mac lineup. IMO the ‘Pro’ in iPad Pro is meant to target creative professionals, not all the types of professionals (for e.g. programmers).

What do you mean by “user experience challenges”?
This is quite neat! But is it just me or does scrolling in the app feel... unnatural? Specifically in comparison to the rest of macOS?
Re:Mechanical Apple Watch from Real E-Waste Apple Watch on Thursday June 08, 2023 @10:06PM (#36252237)
A few years ago, H. Moser & Cie made a mechanical watch with their superb levels of craftsmanship that kinda/sorta parodied the Apple Watch: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/moser-swiss-alp-watch-s-in...
Re:Ask HN: How do you find new music? on Friday May 19, 2023 @05:33AM (#35999612)
I love listening to https://radioparadise.com especially when I don't want to choose what to listen to. Apart from their main stream, they have special streams for mellow, rock, and "world" music (don't like that word, but it is what it is).
Visual Studio App Center has excellent documentation: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/appcenter/distribution/cod.... It's comprehensive and well structured.

If you're looking for a system that looks as good, mkdocs (https://www.mkdocs.org/) with the mkdocs-material theme (https://squidfunk.github.io/mkdocs-material/) can get you quite close!

Have you read the book "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie[^1]? I know the title makes the book sound like a cheap hack but trust me, it's an excellent book and IMHO everyone should read it.

You'll find lots of food for thought around conversations and why some people are great conversationalists.

Extra painful given that the person is a UX researcher.
