OpenAI tricked me into switching to a business account

It's my fault for agreeing (I didn't realize what I was clicking) to move from personal to business account, but now I have to pay for virtually all usage - spending $100s a day for very basic Codex usage. They won't allow me to switch back. So I am moving to other platforms.

It is not socially acceptable to be texting or typing in most meetings I'm in, so I built Scrbbl - hand write a question with an Apple Pencil, underline it three times, and the answer streams back in handwriting below it. Circle it instead for a longer answer.

Try it: https://testflight.apple.com/join/WvMPFk74 (you bring your own OpenAI API key, stored in the iPad's Keychain).

Useful learnings...

Sending a picture of the handwriting to the model beat on-device OCR by a wide margin on messy writing. Speed mattered more than depth for short answers, so the fast mode turns reasoning off. It needs to be able to search the web for current answers.

I don't think there's a path to monetization. Honestly, I just want Apple to incorporate this into Notes (Goodnotes too).

I have reduced my entire tech stack to a clean desk and a MacBook Pro.

No more monitors or microphones or lights or stands. It is so freeing.

Re:Ask HN: How to do market research for product? on Tuesday July 04, 2023 @01:39AM (#36582612)
You conduct a statistically valid survey among your target audience.

If you have the resources, conduct qualitative research like focus groups or individual interviews too.

There are thousand of market researchers like me that do this for a living. Find one you trust and ask them for help.

It gave me a whole new perspective on virtually everything. It answers a lot of the ‘why’ questions about how we got to the place we are in this world.

Re:Ask HN: Why is Microsoft Teams still so bad? on Thursday September 22, 2022 @12:07AM (#32934686)
I’ve known people who work at Microsoft. Their attitude is we are the biggest so we don’t need to be good. This may seem too simple, but it’s their corporate culture.

I use a platform that amazing and 10% the cost of competitors. But run by one dude. I’ve even asked him about the hit-by-a-bus scenario. He didn’t have a good answer. My concern is always there.

I’ve even discussed buying him out because it’s such a worry.

I became a specialist. In my industry there are a ton of general consultants. Some make millions, most get by.

When I chose to specialize, not compete with the general consultants, but make all of them clients, that’s when business took off.

Re:Ask HN: What projects are you working on now? on Saturday March 21, 2020 @11:59PM (#22652613)
Awesome.

FB, Insta, Basecamp all failed today. What's in your digital failure 'go bag'?

Most of us rely heavily on SaaS to communicate, manage projects and store files. What if they went down tomorrow for an hour? The day? A week? What do you have or wish you had in a 'go bag' that would help you communicate and conduct business if a critical business system or the whole Internet failed for some period of time?

Re:Ask HN: What problem in your industry is a potential startup? on Saturday December 10, 2016 @09:32PM (#13149263)
I recently had to reserve six hotel ballrooms/conf. rooms for focus groups. Hotel sales offices suck. They are not responsive, sometimes taking days to respond, they have old technology (if any). They require signatures on multiple documents (almost none use online forms). For some inexplicable reason sales and catering managers all have assistants, who by the way, cannot actually do anything or give you any information, they are just clerks to take info. It was a coordination nightmare to set up all six locations and dates. There is great opportunity here to automate and streamline this process.

It wasn't but I am happy to give props to people who help me. I am pollster - so feel free to hate me even more for that. But have like 100 web and mobile app ideas I want to make and I want to learn how to develop them. More coming soon. Other than the true haters, I've really enjoyed the process and look forward to getting deeper into coding.

Are you serious? Didn't you get help from SOMEONE on your first project. Thanks for the encouragement.

Give a guy a break. I did as much as I could and got help too. That's how you learn, right?

Thanks.
