Re:Ask HN: What has been your favorite VPN provider? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @01:08AM (#50323102)
Nym, IVPN, and Obscura are what I would consider for you. IVPN is the most similar to Mullvad while Nym and Obscura make improvements on the traditional VPN.

No tribalism here. If another cryptocurrency provided low fees, privacy-by-default, and a good track record I would totally use it.

I'm simply curious as I've always seen defi as weird because nothing i've seen seemed useful.

Programmable doesn't mean anything to me. Is there any useful things made with Ethereum for privacy and self-custody?
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Saturday October 31, 2026 @04:23PM (#50319765)
I like this a lot. I was just thinking about a site where you could share your YouTube cookies and then use anybody's curated algorithm because you can curate it quite fast in signed out mode.

Could you block all the trackers from loading from https://www.youtube-nocookie.com on your side?

Thank you for all you do. All of my grandparents joined Signal to message me and they have no issues for the most part. Although, one of them didn't know to press the download icon on photos I sent. I'm not sure why they weren't downloaded automatically.

Also please accept cryptocurrency for buying username-based accounts. The overlap between people that want to buy an account and those that want to use a fully identified payment method is not a lot.

Personally I find the friction of a factory reset to be enough, but yeah this doesn't work if you don't. I'm pretty sure [1] can be set up not not be bypassed but I don't know for sure.

You can use Ente Auth if you want to use TOTP cross-platform.

He goes about it in more ways beyond the initial thing about twitter. Like airplane mode and offline maps.

The only crypto I'm interested in is Monero. What's do you like about Ethereum?
Re:Digital Minimalism on Saturday October 31, 2026 @06:38AM (#50314743)
Wifi is much less of a concern than cellular. The phone only connects to networks you choose, and MAC randomization keeps it anonymous. GrapheneOS also fixes VPN leaks that stock Android has, which helps on wifi too. Linux, Windows, and MacOS are not good at preventing VPN leaks.

Phones are not inherently bad for privacy. The cell connection, telemetry, and default apps are the main problems. The first can be solved with airplane mode, and the latter two with a custom OS (or an iPhone to an extent), just as you’d install Linux for those advantages over Windows. Due to their security model (app sandboxing, permissions, exploit protections), they’re a much better place to start for making a private OS that protects user data. GrapheneOS with airplane mode is more private than most desktop setups.

This is a great blog post. I do a lot of similar things on my phone (GrapheneOS, airplane mode, CoMaps).

The thing that I’d been looking for on this minimal setup was a way to prevent access to the browser or installing apps at will. It was easy enough when I was on iOS. I just used Apple Configurator [1] to block Safari and the App Store, but on GrapheneOS, there was no great option.

Recently I made a device owner app [2] which allows hiding any UI app and locking itself. It ended up being quite an elegant solution as it allows full access to app stores for updates (new apps you install are hidden until you unlock and approve them). The only way around it is with the lock code or a factory reset.

This makes my phone a quite private device whose functionality I intentionally set ahead of time. It can only do what the apps I’ve chosen can do. I prefer browsing and similar on a computer.

[1] Apple’s Mac MDM app anyone can use. You need a Mac and to factory reset your phone first.

I vaguely remember actually the number 1 and 2 "rule" of Monero to not say how much you have. We're lucky how dumb many cybercriminals are.

I expect Monero to be a good investment going into this LLM era.

It always pumps after hacks when they swap to clean it. But it is also just the only crypto that makes sense to be used by regular people.

Sending Claude this article along with the fingerprinting script, it interacted fine with it.
Fluxer is what people should look at if they're trying to get off discord.
Glad to have been proven wrong for trusting prediction markets.
Illegal, meaning There's laws against it, like being gay in many countries. Not morally wrong, although there is a lot of that.

Well that sucks then: https://polymarket.com/event/brazil-presidential-election

80% chance Bolsonaro wins.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as “Android,” is in fact Android/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Android plus Linux kernel.

Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather a kernel—a core component that manages hardware resources. Android uses the Linux kernel, but replaces the traditional GNU userland with its own runtime, libraries, and system framework.

Many users run Linux-based systems every day without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the Linux kernel combined with Android’s userspace is often simply called “Android,” and many of its users are not aware that it is built on Linux at its core.

There really is Linux in Android, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs you run. The kernel is an essential part of the system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system.

Android is normally used in combination with the Linux kernel: the whole system is basically Android/Linux, a Linux-based operating system with a distinct userspace, not a GNU/Linux system like traditional desktop distributions.

There's five banking apps that support it specifically listed here [1]. I guess the dozen is not listed somewhere. Roblox, Hyundai, and Kia are also apps that officially support GrapheneOS. We should note that not all that are supporting it are using attestation.

I find all the people complaining about this to be rather insane. This is a completely open source linux distro getting official support from banks, some of the most legacy companies of all. This is good news. If companies are open-minded enough to support GrapheneOS, they're gonna be much more likely to also officially support other secure operating systems that are open source.

These are banking apps that weren't previously possible to be used on GrapheneOS. We're going from zero to one, not a step back.

[1] https://github.com/PrivSec-dev/banking-apps-compat-report/is...

That's the biggest problem with iOS because Apple can be ordered to block them from the App Store and it would be instantly kill these privacy services market share.
