This plays right into Putin's hands including everything else Trump has been doing to bring down the USA.

Anyone else think those inductor windings look sloppy like they were done by hand instead of a machine?

Sorry, after the Tegna deal they will own all three stations in my market. Essentially, the viewpoints we see will be determined by one man.
Re:ABC Pulls Jimmy Kimmel Live from the Air 'Indefinitely' on Wednesday September 17, 2025 @07:34PM (#45282785)
Nexstar, who initially threaten to pull Kimmel's show from all (200) of its stations and started this ball rolling, owns ALL THREE OF OUR LOCAL network affiliate stations. All 3 in one market. Remember when this was illegal?
Re:Firefox tab groups are here on Tuesday April 29, 2025 @12:57PM (#43835165)
Is there a way to hide the colored tab group buttons so they can only be seen in the List-all-tabs drop-down?
Where I live (in the USA), they are still building new gas stations. Are they expecting the government to bail them out? What kind of business person sees the impending end of fossil-fuel cars and builds a gas station?
Is there anything compelling in Windows 11 that would make me want to switch from Windows 10?
Re:A New Bootable USB Solution on Monday October 18, 2021 @11:14AM (#28906256)
Getting a malware warning from virustotal.com on the download.
I tried to go to their site to look up a drug that my spouse takes - you can't look up prices without signing up and you have to give them your phone number...NOPE!
Liquid soaps are a poor choice from an environmental/cost standpoint. Most of the soap goes down the drain and is wasted. Bar soap stays on your hands and last many times longer.

Oh yeah, I'm going to download a script from a website I've never heard of and pipe it into shell without review.

Even if 99 percent of the time nothing benign is happening, why get people used to doing this?

Re:PulseAudio requirement breaks Firefox on ALSA-only systems on Wednesday March 15, 2017 @01:01PM (#13877649)
FYI, we're a long time Linux shop (mostly Ubuntu server) and are slowing moving away from it because I don't like the direction it is going (systemd, etc). I've got more than half of our systems on FreeBSD/OpenBSD now.
Re:PulseAudio requirement breaks Firefox on ALSA-only systems on Wednesday March 15, 2017 @10:19AM (#13876250)
It's gotten much easier to both upgrade and to install software. Example:

To apply security patches:

  freebsd-update fetch

  freebsd-update install
To upgrade to a new version of the operating system:

  freebsd-update -r 11.0-RELEASE upgrade
To install software:

  pkg install chromium
You can still use the ports system if you want to, but pkg is so much easier.
Re:14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School on Wednesday September 16, 2015 @10:41AM (#10226940)
If police really thought this was a bomb, why didn't they evacuate the school and call the bomb squad? Their motives are suspect.

Re:Ask HN: What's your favorite CLI or ncurses program? on Friday September 04, 2015 @08:41AM (#10170002)
nvlc - a ncurses vlc videolan media player built into vlc.

nvlc is just a script supplied with vlc: #! /bin/sh exec /usr/bin/vlc -I "ncurses" "$@"

Title is inaccurate - the important part at the end was cut off: "- Ex-employees"

Accusation is presented as fact.

This would be a better title: "Russian antivirus firm faked malware to harm rivals - say ex-employees"

Re:Own-Mailbox, the first 100% confidential mailbox on Monday June 29, 2015 @10:34AM (#9798306)
Many ISP's including my own in the U.S. don't allow running servers from home, especially SMTP.
Re:Why I dislike systemd on Monday June 15, 2015 @10:16AM (#9719366)
I wouldn't say the init scripts on OpenBSD are complex:

# cat smtpd

#!/bin/sh # # $OpenBSD: smtpd,v 1.4 2012/10/26 06:51:59 ajacoutot Exp $

daemon="/usr/sbin/smtpd"

. /etc/rc.d/rc.subr

pexp="smtpd: \[priv\]"

rc_reload=NO

rc_cmd $1

6. No client-side encryption

7. Deceptive advertising. Telling their customers that they encrypt data enroute and at rest without telling them that they use a single common password for every customer.

Zenni seems to be moving away from Acetate frames to plastic which aren't nearly as nice.
Re:Amazon Cloud Drive: Prime Photos on Tuesday November 04, 2014 @11:45AM (#8557470)
Amazon has a history of creating web applications (I'm thinking about their MP3 cloud drive) and then seemingly abandoning all further development. Either they have small teams of developers that move from project to project, or it is outsourced.

I'm not confident in Amazon's long term approach to these products.

I'm a advanced-amateur photographer and half of my photos are RAW format, not JPG's. I'll be surprised if this offering supports any format besides JPG.

Yubico Executive caught astroturfing on Amazon product review

The first comment for a new 2-factor authentication product on Amazon's website was posted immediately after the product was announced.http://i.imgur.com/5u9Zr6v.jpgThe comment giver's name happens to be the same as the Chief Business Officer at Yubico:https://www.yubico.com/about/team/Not only does he not identify himself as an executive for the company, he misleads by saying "Received my U2F...

Re:True Goodbye: ‘Using TrueCrypt Is Not Secure’ on Thursday May 29, 2014 @11:49AM (#7816822)
Here's my theory (step-by-step):

1. Truecrypt is a gigantic pain-in-the-side for US intelligence agencies.

2. Intelligence agencies brainstorm about the best way to deal with the situation.

3. Taking over and tampering with the current code is deemed unrealistic. The user base of Truecrypt is very sophisticated and even minor changes to the source code would be scrutinized.

4. "How can be get people to stop using Truecrypt?" "We can discredit the project - get people to voluntarily stop using it because they don't trust it".

Bazqux

Put it on the list - it's got 4 votes already

Re:Dwolla realtime payments on Monday October 07, 2013 @01:30PM (#6509768)
Anyone considering doing business with Dwolla should read up on how they treated their customer TradeHill. (Google it). The internet has a long memory.
I am more than willing to give FastMail twenty USD per year, so it is not expensive in that regard, but it is expense for what you get. 1GB of space? Give me a break. All of the tiers need to shift down a notch while keeping the price the same. $20 for 10 GB would be reasonable.
