I've had a similar experience, shipping new features at incredible speed, then waste a ton of time going down the wrong track trying to debug something because the LLM gave me a confidently wrong solution.

Are UCNP heterostructures also the most promising area of application, or are you looking to apply the method in other areas now that you've validated it in the stringent case?

Re:Ask HN: What's the "best" book you've ever read? on Thursday October 10, 2024 @08:28PM (#41804956)
How do you read it though? I tried but felt like I'm lacking a lot of context without which it doesn't make much sense.
Re:The End Times have come for the Pinboard bookmarking service on Thursday September 19, 2024 @03:00PM (#41595135)
I started another just last week: https://github.com/sumnerjj/bookmarkstorage2

Show HN: Local Bookmark Storage and Archive

https://github.com/sumnerjj/bookmarkstorage2

I decided I needed a reliable backup of my bookmarks, and an archive of those pages for future reference in case they get taken down. I paid for a managed online service that did this for a while, but I was unsatisfied with the archiving reliability. This is pretty much just a 200 line python script, but it does the trick, and now I don't have to worry about losing a copy of a web page that I...

Fascinating!

Are you offering an API for the workout generator?

Any plans to generate workout plans for a week/month and incorporate rest days?

Not saying it's nice, but that just sounds like tough negotiating to me. As opposed to actual illegal salary collusion by Apple, Google, Intel, Adobe
Stall for time: repeat what the other person said back to them, reframe the questions, state the obvious, use filler words, etc. Say stuff mindless enough that you can think about the real problem while talking.

Do you really think the proportion of people who care about those issues is greater inside these companies, compared with the general population? Or is the proportion of people roughly the same, but they only speak up about it because those are the issues the company is involved with?

Re:Staying Alive on Sunday June 25, 2023 @12:36PM (#36470013)
Yeah the soul question seemed unfair, in the sense that I answered the first two with the assumption there is no soul, but the third question asks to assume a soul exists, so there's no way to answer it and stay consistent with my previous two answers
I highly recommend MIT open courseware 6.824. Incredibly valuable for learning distributed systems, and one of the lab assignments is implementing raft in Go. http://nil.csail.mit.edu/6.824/2022/schedule.html

There are a ton of fascinating and potentially frustrating edge cases and gotchas to implementing raft correctly. There's no better way to understand it than actually implementing it, and I probably never would have done it myself without these course materials.

When I tried to give a quick explanation of what an aperiodic was to a friend recently, calling it a geometric version of irrational numbers was the easiest way to do it. Glad to hear my explanation had some substance to it, and wasn't just one of those "you can think of it like this, but that's not what it really is" explanations.
Re:Critique of the mind/body problem: it's not solvable on Friday February 03, 2023 @06:52PM (#34649576)
At some point in the long to infinite history of the universe there will eventually be born a creature with a configuration of neurons sort of similar to the configuration you had before you died. So it's sort of reasonable to say that's you. Plus time passes quickly when you're dead, so to you it will feel like no time at all.
Re:Show HN: Working on a Zero-Knowledge Daily Journaling App on Tuesday January 31, 2023 @02:50PM (#34600877)
The thing that finally got me into journaling was becoming obsessed with fountain pens and stationary. So I journal as an excuse to use my fun pens and ink and paper, and as a nice side effect I actually get some useful journaling done!
General: vitamin D, epa/dha (AKA vegan fish oil), and b12 (I'm vegan btw)

Workouts: creatine, pea protein isolate, and amino acids (leucine, etc.)

How did you feel it compared with some of his other works? Personally I enjoyed it, but to me it wasn't quite on the same level with some of his other books like the buried giant or remains of the day.
Re:Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022? on Monday December 19, 2022 @03:21PM (#34057128)
+1 for Endurance, and if you enjoyed that I also recommend The Terror (which is historical fiction but had a similar feel to me)
Re:Ask HN: What is the best thing you read in 2022? on Monday December 19, 2022 @02:51PM (#34056751)
"When We Cease to Understand the World" was fascinating historical fiction, which felt more like fiction because the stories were so out there and well-written. Many times I looked up the wikipedia entry on some character or event, only to discover that some of the more bizarre and out-there parts of the story that I had assumed were fiction were actually fact.

Re:Ask HN: Best Board Games of 2022 on Wednesday December 14, 2022 @05:14PM (#33991398)
Honey buzz was my favorite (new to me) game of 2022. It's rare to find a game with this combination of both top tier strategic depth and aesthetics.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/284742/honey-buzz

It might be less bad than the other things we do to animals, but it's still pretty horrifying. You could conclude we should give hens higher priority, but I'd say we should place more importance on reducing cruelty of all kinds.
Re:Digital Books wear out faster than Physical Books on Tuesday November 15, 2022 @06:51PM (#33616937)
If your goals are 1) pay for it 2) have the convenience of no DRM, then it sounds like doing it this way worked out fine. Except maybe that pirating as a second step is slightly less convenient than downloading directly from the same place you bought it.

Easy, you just hire a another hacker/PI to investigate them first...

Re:Observations from our Joe Rogan Experience experience on Tuesday August 30, 2022 @06:08PM (#32655794)
Not to dispute any of your points, but one of the reasons I find some of the JRE podcasts interesting is that he gets people to open up and talk about (admit to) stuff they otherwise might not. Joey's comments are repulsive, but it's a good thing we now know what kind of person he is.

Not sure if that's a net positive overall, but it's something to consider.

Thanks for the quote, now I want to go read that book! I really like the way he voices parts 1 and 2, as it echoes similar thoughts I've had but haven't articulated so elegantly.

I think my personal answer to (3) is slightly different but to each their own!

Re:Ask HN: What's your favorite board game? on Wednesday July 06, 2022 @02:38PM (#32005024)
- Code names. It appeals to a wide crowd because you can approach it as creative fun, or a puzzle to be solved. And it leads you to figure out how the other players think, which is a fun way to get to know someone.

- Finca (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40628/finca) is a great game; very accessible with plenty of strategic depth. Sadly it's out of print.

I wonder if something similar could be useful for transmitting data optically, like an animated QR code. Maybe a good way to transmit data over an air gap for the paranoid?
