They have! There was a famous incident in 2016 where NK tried to wire a billion dollars out of the NY fed and managed to get away with $100 million.

Re:Northflank Breached on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:09PM (#50306901)
It was a good blog post yes, but I think you’re underplaying the bannister effect of Anthropic coming out and endorsing glm 5.3’s cyberattack prowess.
Re:Northflank Breached on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:51PM (#50306634)
Yeah IIRC calif research on php2shell preceded all of that but I still stand by the thought that Anthropic has been the most accelerationist AI company despite its lip service to the notion of safety.
Re:Northflank Breached on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:35PM (#50306369)
I feel like these breaches started to accelerate after Anthropic wrote a full post about how easy it is to abliterate glm 5.3 to make a frontier-level cyber model.

Now, to be clear, abliteration was no state secret, but that blog post was pure accelerationism.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @01:36PM (#50075550)
You're not convincing me. The war for compute within google is well known by now. Every single product decision stems from that.

Do you really think people in google are happy about how long it took to release this model?

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:35PM (#50074522)
Announced the model two weeks ago to a ton of hype, model was unavailable for anyone to try. On twitter, Google folks went on a great run taking shots at Muse ("Muse who?"). The hype died down bc nobody could touch the models and meta/muse came out with a similarly capable model in the meanwhile.

At the same time, OpenAI had a disastrous dev day that led a lot of users to jump ship to Claude.

Couple weeks later, Gemini-4-argon is still unavailable on anything less than the ultra tier, which means there's no natural funnel to get ppl to pay for the more expensive ultra plan other than "trust us the model is good".

If Google had argon broadly available earlier this month they would have picked up a ton of new users.

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:22PM (#50074258)
It's obvious OAI hillclimbs the image generation -> SVG loop. I'd put money down on that being why OAI's pelicans have a yellowish tint that matches the yellow tint of OAI's earlier image models.
Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:15PM (#50074108)
I'm using this model via API. I am most excited about its ability to write the english language (or any language). My least favorite trend on twitter has been people posting 2D illustrations/3D renders as a proxy for model capability. Well-written prose is far less likely to go viral but far outstrips the ability to render a fantasy world in one shot.

I've been trying it out via the API and the model has been a delight so far. Clear in the head, not RL-fried, distinct writing style, and big model smell. That said, the em-dash is back w/ this model.

That said, I would be so frustrated with Sundar Pichai if I was on the Google team. The botched rollout of this model seems to be entirely a matter of capacity, and Pichai has been more than happy to give it to anybody but his own team.

Re:Apple HomeView on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @09:44AM (#50071664)
The overwhelming cynicism about this product I'm seeing here on HN tells me it's going to be a hit.
Re:GLM-Legal: Advancing Agentic Legal Intelligence on Monday October 12, 2026 @12:26PM (#50058745)
Looks like this is not an open model. I'm curious how the sentiment toward chinese models will shift as labs trend toward keeping them proprietary.

Also, I wonder if this is at all related to the recent reports that Harvey has been getting squeezed on margins by the US labs.

What a f-ing nightmare. It's stuff like this where I start to understand Apple's stance on right to repair. How do you maintain hardware security without strict provenance over every component in your device?
Most institutions (especially financial) have strict document retention policies to protect themselves from situations like this. It's not shady – just a way of limiting liability.

At my first job I made the mistake of discovering a cache of old documents, documents that were far older than the company's seven-year document retention policy. The cache, being my discovery, meant I became the one responsible for destroying it. It was dozens on dozes of bankers boxes filled with documents that I de-spine before shredding.

You would have thought that the process was a chore but for me it was exhilarating. The slowness of the process gave me the opportunity to speed read through it all. There was nothing scandalous in there, but I became somewhat of a historian over many quiet nights.

Since this is for the mac you really should be using apple's vision framework for OCR. It smokes tesseract in both speed and accuracy.

Edit: I'm curious which LLM was used to generate the code. I fed the title of your post to claude/deepseek/qwen/codex asking to recommend a stack for this project, expecting to frown thinking that they still recommend tesseract. However, I found that they all recommend apple's vision framework. In fact the latest model to recommend Tesseract is gpt-4.1.

Om too. Bad year.

OpenAI has an enormous team working on Codex. The folks who train models are different people.
Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:11AM (#49891261)
Chat UIs are a minefield of “if you accidentally click this your data will be shared or trained without you realizing it!”
Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @07:04AM (#49891191)
Yes, technically, guessing a url is impossible. But browser histories are stored in cleartext and trivially accessible to sketchy actors.

I also accidentally paste random stuff into input boxes all the time.

Re:AI companies leak data to advertisers [pdf] on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @06:50AM (#49891049)
My least favorite trend I’ve noticed with so many AI chat services is they seem to equate a UUID in the url with privacy.

Perplexity does this. Visiting a past perplexity search url exposes your full conversation.

Re:The darker side of being a doctor on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @07:41AM (#49814567)
We do have qualified people to do the work of doctors, and they're called nurses. But arbitrary lines are drawn between what they can do and what doctors can do, just to maintain the existing salary structure.
Re:Jev: New frontier model 40-400x cheaper and 20-200x faster on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @04:14AM (#49723450)
Yeah. Computer use is essentially a model navigating the OS-provided accessibility tree. I imagine a model trained on it would operate the computer exactly as we saw it control Doom.

Re:Jev: New frontier model 40-400x cheaper and 20-200x faster on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @06:17PM (#49719621)
This has the potential to be huge for computer use.

OpenAI has been teasing how fast computer use is with their models running on Cerebras chips but the difference here is a burning hole in your pocket.

Re:Ask HN: How can I browse HN in dark mode? on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @06:14AM (#49710200)
Coincidentally, the midnight theme was created specifically for the reason you asked this question: for using HN while lying down next to a toddler/partner. It has a reduced white point because most dark modes are too bright to use in bed near others. Def not a great daytime dark theme though – that's what the others are for :)
Re:Show HN: Real-time push notifications for Hacker News comments on Saturday September 12, 2026 @08:13AM (#49671532)
appreciate it!
Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @11:37PM (#49668505)
Fixed it, it should work now.
Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:41PM (#49665771)
you can essentially mute words on hcker.news. You can set exclusion filters in the settings. Those can be turned into rss feeds as well.
Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:39PM (#49665755)
Yeah, all possible, the infra for all of that is set up. I think I understand your request but can u send me an email so I can talk it through with you a little more?
Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @05:34PM (#49665692)
Hm, I couldnt reproduce on firefox mac. Which version of firefox are you on? can you open the network inspector to see if you're hitting the api?
Re:Show HN: Hacker News, without AI on Friday September 11, 2026 @04:55PM (#49665234)
I've been serving this to users for the past year. I like to believe that i've inspired others.
