Looks like a bunch of Vulkan decoders and filters have been added. Nice!

Summary: The website will relaunch with detailed hardware reviews ad-free.
China already have a rich literary history, why does the west need to give up ours?
Re:Guide to Adopting AV1 Encoding on Friday November 03, 2023 @05:41PM (#38135355)
I'm sure AV1 will have it's time. But for now I'm preferring x265 HEVC for hi-fi video (movies etc.).

I too wish Opus got more love in the video space. Outside of YouTube and VOIP, it doesn't get used.

Shame since Opus is smarter with bitrate allocation with surround sound.

I don't know what model runs on Phind's site right now, but in August Phind published a fine tune of CodeLlama 34B

https://huggingface.co/Phind/Phind-CodeLlama-34B-v2

A few of Phind's models are open/available

I have to thank this post for giving the clearest overview on DragonflyBSD to date.
Linked is the base model. What you want is the instruct model (also on TheBloke's profile), which has been trained on following instructions.
This is frankly the best benchmark you can use on an LLM.
Re:Valve releases Counter-Strike 2 on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @08:28PM (#37683552)
Looking previews this past year. I don't like how clean all the maps look. One thing the Source versions of the game did well is it made the areas feel lived in and sometimes dirty.

I hope this can be improved on in future updates with CS2.

Re:Counter Strike 2 is here on Wednesday September 27, 2023 @08:21PM (#37683505)
For those comatose the last 10 years. Valve never released a Half-Life 3 or Episode 3.
Re:National Film Board of Canada on Thursday September 07, 2023 @04:21AM (#37416136)
I would like to suggest anyone already into Boards of Canada to check out their demo tapes ("Old Tunes" and "Random 35 Tracks") which are on YouTube.

They are some of the earliest BoC tracks and probably sound the most like the namesake.

Re:Godot 4.0 Released on Wednesday March 01, 2023 @09:27PM (#34991155)
Maybe it's too basic, but GD Quest is working on "Learn GDScript from zero" which runs in a browser.

Re:Godot 4.0 Released on Wednesday March 01, 2023 @09:19PM (#34991102)
I wonder if Godot will become the best way to teach introductory programming to students?

It's very easy to create simple toys with Godot, because it has a Python-like scripting and good UI.

Re:YouTube Addiction on Sunday January 15, 2023 @03:36AM (#34387832)
It's getting really bad. I've seen horrible voice dubs over Elon Musk keynote presentations advertising crypto in the YouTube ads!
Re:YouTube Addiction on Sunday January 15, 2023 @03:33AM (#34387815)
Political videos on YouTube has the widest spectrum when it comes to quality.

You can get highly informative, mind-changing videos with 10k-30k views. And on the other end, hot-take, "debate me bro!" Twitch personalities with 1M-3M views.

That's the nature of it, don't see this on any other category really.

Re:Promotion of alternative social platforms policy on Sunday December 18, 2022 @08:59PM (#34047314)
This is probably the reason Nostr makes an appearance in the policy then.
Re:Minetest for the Web on Friday October 14, 2022 @04:26PM (#33208434)
I suppose it depends on perspective. MC Alpha these days lacks performance optimisation, and cannot beat the extensibility of Minetest IMO.
Re:Watching 'Spirited Away' again, and again on Friday September 23, 2022 @04:58AM (#32949513)
I'm also a fan of Lain. Looking back, I think it's best if you watch Neon Genesis Evangelion first, and then go into Lain with the expectation that half of the scenes were inspired by the trippy introspective scenes in Eva.

As someone who watched Lain first, I found it much harder to follow as half of the scenes were distinctively dream-like and weren't "happening".

Re:2022 Amish Population Profile on Sunday July 31, 2022 @03:48AM (#32294005)
Most countries (including those outside the west) are falling, or have fallen below replacement rate.

If we extrapolate this over the next few decades, and accept the conclusion that more technology = less children, and we can expect to see more technology in the future. Almost no new children will be born from within these high-tech societies, we will have to rely on immigration from Africa (the only place where replacement rate is high), and low-tech traditional religious societies.

What good is technology in this future scenario?

I'd recommend checking out zpaq[1], it purposed for backups, and has great compression (even on low setting) for large 100GB+ file collections. However for smaller stuff I use zstd at level 22 in a tar for most things since it's much faster, though a little heavier.

Recently won an award for being power & resource-efficient by German group Blue Angel. Not from Germany, so not familiar with the award, and how much weight it holds.

Had no idea it was also for Windows, I might have to start recommending it to friends/family instead of Sumatra.
