Re:Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media on Sunday August 09, 2020 @05:54PM (#24103266)
Today you can follow the movements of anyone with technology. You're already screwed. The messages could not organize a resistance
Re:Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media on Sunday August 09, 2020 @05:50PM (#24103230)
All these points already exist today and for a long time.
Re:Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media on Sunday August 09, 2020 @05:40PM (#24103150)
But in that case you've already lost all freedom. What can be done in a fascist country by sending encrypted messages?
Re:Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media on Sunday August 09, 2020 @05:29PM (#24103073)
I think Gates is right. What is the problem with the government controlling communication? There are clear advantages, like handling illegal things. What are the disadvantages, the nude photo of your ex-girlfriend being analyzed by a machine?
What about "none" instead of zero?

Sonic the hedgehog is also blue.
Re:ChocoPy: A Programming Language for Compilers Courses on Thursday September 12, 2019 @10:43PM (#20958703)
What? I don't know what "chochopy" is, but this project is called Chocopy.
There is a big difference between a 8 bit computer and a 8 bit FANTASY computer. But you don't get it, sorry!

First time I hear about this guy. Interesting.

I'm really clueless about logic and mathematics theory, but isn't this the Gödel's incompleteness theorem?
Re:John Conway: Discovering free will (2011) on Thursday July 26, 2018 @10:38AM (#17617829)
I don't know if this adds anything to your comment; The input of a program is neither predetermined nor random.

If there is an input "out of our reality", then our reality would not be predetermined nor would it be random. (Which makes sense for the simulation hypothesis, which I enjoy having that conversation with my colleagues)

Re:John Conway: Discovering free will (2011) on Thursday July 26, 2018 @07:35AM (#17616608)
I'm not assuming free will exists. To be honest, I'm personally a compatibilist. I'm determinism and free will agnostic. No evidence for free will doesn't mean determinsm is true. No evidence for determinism doesn't mean free will is true. Is an unpopular opinion. But I see no gap in the logic.
Re:John Conway: Discovering free will (2011) on Thursday July 26, 2018 @07:22AM (#17616551)
Oh boy, I know this is arrogant; It's pretty easy to show evidence of determinism. 1) Read my brain, check if in ten seconds I will say yes or nothing. 2) Don't tell me. 3) Wait ten seconds. 4) Compare results. I'm aware of the experiments of reading brain decisions faster than our consiousness (machines telling which button we will play "before we realized"). No, no psychomotor tricks. Just read my brain, don't tell me until I made my choice. If you get 100% I believe you, meanwhile, no evidence.
I am confused :S

From your other post: "In both Gluon and Haskell, functions without arguments can be represented as functions over the unit type: f: () -> SomeType"

Isn't `f` a constant here too?, how is this different than getChar? (I get I don't understand something here but not sure what)

getChar is a Haskell function without arguments.
Re:Ask HN: How to find a mental health professional? on Wednesday June 13, 2018 @04:13PM (#17306542)
Most of professional therapists are highly empathic, they are not like the average person. You will never be dissapointed, even if you feel you need another therapist, the experience is worth.

Don't overthink too much, a therapist is not a friend, your problem is not strange for them, they deal all the time with people suffering the same problems you are experiencing.

Good luck.

Re:Has Consciousness Lost Its Mind? on Saturday June 09, 2018 @09:32PM (#17275949)
I haven't read enough about consciousness, but I think the most important modern thinker with "eastern paradigm" is Bernardo Kastrup: https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/coming-to-...
This should be removed from HN. If you dislike Github because Microsoft acquired it, then migrate to GitLab. There is no point on this fanatic and paranoid dramatization; It adds nothing to the Open Source productive community.
Re:The Marshmallow Test: What Does It Really Measure? on Sunday June 03, 2018 @05:59AM (#17218822)
Your cats are an unrepresentative sample of the mammal population, your conclusion is biased.
Re:The Marshmallow Test: What Does It Really Measure? on Sunday June 03, 2018 @05:41AM (#17218759)
I never said to ignore the question.

Experiments require resources which are limited. And after the falsification of intelligence genes, it makes sense to find a psychological cause for delay of gratification first, and test other logical explanations second.

Edit: I was wrong. Reading Wikipedia article (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritability_of_IQ), it seems intelligence is related to both genes and enviroment.

Re:The Marshmallow Test: What Does It Really Measure? on Sunday June 03, 2018 @05:07AM (#17218652)
It can be argued that gratification delay is more psychology related than genetics. And while it can be found a pattern on genes, probably it will be falsified like happened before with these kind of experiments.
Re:The Marshmallow Test: What Does It Really Measure? on Sunday June 03, 2018 @04:26AM (#17218537)
You think the behavior of your cats represent the mammal population?
Why comparing something he isn't interested with something that interest him shows his lack of understanding of the world?.
Flooding tha brain with serotonin and dopamine are the solution, but the problem is that most of medications are reuptake inhibitors. They doesn't work for many people and have horrible side effects.
I'm on the same boat. I've spend lots of energy on projects that nobody cared, eventually I lost self-motivation and stopped enjoying life. The last four years I tried different medications with no results.

We live in a world where success is the main motivation. When you realize you don't have the resources to study AI at Harvard, or the contacts to make your product successful; That motivation is gone.

All I can say is don't be harsh to yourself. And remember you are not alone in this unpleasant experience.

Good luck.
