As someone who has difficulty in detecting irony, could you explain the irony in this statement?
Re:Note the commit hash on Sunday April 06, 2014 @06:51PM (#7543544)
If you're wondering how he did it, Brad wrote a tool called 'gitbrute'[1] that (as the name suggests) brute-forces the prefix of the hash to whatever you like.

Re:Popular startup stole my code – now what? on Wednesday March 26, 2014 @04:58PM (#7476603)
How do you know they shipped your code?
I would argue that as a PR move, it's pretty brilliant. It's been brought up countless times since it was announced, and it's been pretty hype up until now. Sure, it was basically a sure bet for Buffet.. But it spawned a community in itself[1] and captured the imagination of many. I'd call that a good move.

Re:Satoshi Nakamoto denies being Dorian Nakamoto on Thursday March 06, 2014 @10:42PM (#7358407)
He did say he was wrong. He was simply stating he was surprised he didn't realise sooner, given how he had already identified a similar method of forgery in an earlier affair.
Re:Confessions of an Intermediate Programmer on Monday March 03, 2014 @08:00PM (#7337745)
It's funny, as a kid I can remember thinking: "Right, everything has to go in the main function unless absolutely necessary, it will just be easier to read that way."

Nowadays, it's the exact opposite!

Re:Why I Eat Lunch at My Desk on Monday March 03, 2014 @10:21AM (#7334146)
I don't understand the reasoning about working less time overall. I do something similar with my lunch-breaks: I work through them, and go home an hour earlier at the end of the day. It doesn't mean I've worked less time, just that I've moved the lunch hour to the end of the day. I still work 7.5 hours a day.
Re:Show HN: Speedsums on Saturday February 08, 2014 @11:15AM (#7201547)
This is incredibly user hostile with lines like "you should probably practice a little before embarrassing yourself again" and "It should not take 4.18s to solve that next time."

Is that part of discouraging procrastination or what? As it stands, I couldn't show my sisters this without them getting upset with me.

Re:Google Has Officially Penalized Rap Genius For Link Schemes on Wednesday December 25, 2013 @12:18PM (#6963453)
Damn, I tried searching up some rap lyrics that I knew worked a couple of days ago, no dice. How long does this penalisation last?
Re:This Is How I Work on Wednesday December 25, 2013 @12:08PM (#6963419)
You would have to make a huge number of assumptions to draw the conclusion that this guy is a psychopath or otherwise a no-lifer. So what if he continues working after dinner? Does he say what he works on? It could be anything, personal projects, writing..

I know that I split my post-work time in to my various projects, and I wouldn't personally call it 'work'. I understand that others believe that you should take the time to watch television or play games or otherwise unwind. For me, working on my projects lets me unwind. I'm not sure what people mean by 'balance', when I consider my own projects the 'life' part of work-life.

This guy gets up early, keeps himself fit, works hard, keeps up the social side of things (sure, he might talk about work over lunch, but he doesn't say he doesn't just shoot the shit too), and then gets on with stuff he enjoys. This doesn't scream Patrick Bateman to me at all.

Re:This Is How I Work on Wednesday December 25, 2013 @11:59AM (#6963395)
I'm not entirely sure what you're driving at. It seems you're equating having a routine with being a psychopath. While narcissism like in your extract can be considered part of the dark triad, it seems like you've decided the OP is also a narcissist with little to no evidence to back it up. Then again, I can only guess at what you're getting at when your only statement (argument?) is a quote from a piece of fiction.

Working out regularly does not make you a narcissist. In fact, he doesn't even specify the exercises he does. For all we know, he goes jogging to help boost his cardiovascular health, rather than pumping iron. And even if he did pump iron, let him. It's what he wants to do, and it doesn't make him a psycho.

Why don't they authenticate with their own Twitter account? I'm not sure why they would need mine.
Re:Are You A Typing Hacker? Prove It on Saturday November 02, 2013 @11:11AM (#6659404)
Haha, great. This reminds me of The Typing of the Dead and its sequel(s?), which were basically The House of the Dead games re-written so you had to type rather than point a gun. Brilliant stuff, this game.
Re:The parable of the fisherman on Thursday October 24, 2013 @01:55PM (#6606751)
I was under the impression that the story was actually about taking chances when they're offered to you, and about the consequences of letting great opportunities pass you by. Not so much about the whole ethical responsibilities of big business.
Re:Can you do binary under pressure? on Monday October 21, 2013 @03:01PM (#6587504)
I learned I can even do hexadecimal under pressure, with no warning!
Re:Learn Clojure with Clojure Koans on Sunday December 30, 2012 @08:33PM (#4987899)
Indeed, I'm trying to wrap my head around it now. It's a shame, this looked like a nice fun way to just drop in to playing around with Clojure, but it turns out that it's being bit of a hassle. Not that I don't think there should be a little effort involved! It's just that my expectations did not match up to reality.
Re:Learn a Programming Language Faster by Copying Unix on Saturday November 03, 2012 @12:31PM (#4737007)
This is a brilliant idea, and may I suggest that one takes it slightly further than just implementing the core functionality, and aiming for a complete clone (optional parameters and all) with a few enhancements.

Indeed, for a further ego boost, why not also benchmark the performance of your versions against the performance of the native utilities? You never know, your new clone might end up being the new 'less' to the old 'more'!

Well, this is insanely creepy, but at least it shows a bit of entrepreneurial spirit. Rather than focus on the somewhat questionable ethics, how about we talk about how it actually accomplishes this?

1) What features of OpenCV are you using, what sort of shapes are you looking for in images?

2) What's the true positive rate on test sets? And importantly, what's the false negative rate?

Re:Why I got Fired from Facebook (a $100 Million dollar lesson) on Saturday September 29, 2012 @12:28PM (#4590025)
How exactly did he lose $100,000,000?
Re:Open Dyslexic - Dyslexia Fonts on Wednesday September 19, 2012 @04:53PM (#4545528)
Was I the only one who thought these were going to be normal fonts with some of the letters switched around?
Re:Analysis of bank PIN numbers on Monday September 17, 2012 @10:11PM (#4535930)
High five for using 'PIN numbers' and not caring about repeating the word 'numbers'. That'll probably drive some people nuts, but not me!
Re:Google Acquires Nik Software on Monday September 17, 2012 @04:54PM (#4534840)
Wow, have you checked out the comments on that page? Virtually zero congratulatory messages, just many, many self-entitled people bemoaning the "downfall" of the company. Good on Nik Software I say, they worked hard for this, let them enjoy it.
