A common strategy is to first establish precedent by successfully suing smaller / less deep-pocketed entities, and then using that victory to compel more resourced organizations to comply. When SFC brought this lawsuit, Vizio was an independent company and much smaller than Amazon. Of course, its purchase by Walmart in 2024 changes that a bit—but before then, easier for SFC to face Vizio’s legal team than Amazon’s.
The intro paragraph makes it pretty clear IMO:
“The review paper is a staple of medical literature and, when well executed by an expert in the field, can provide a summary of literature that generates useful recommendations and new conceptualizations of a topic. However, if research results are selectively chosen, a review has the potential to create a convincing argument for a faulty hypothesis. Improper correlation or extrapolation of data can result in dangerously flawed conclusions. The following paper seeks to illustrate this point, using existing research to argue the hypothesis that cigarette smoking enhances endurance performance and should be incorporated into high-level training programs.”
Sonarr is for TV Shows, Radarr for Movies
Might be worth looking into valetudo, a local-only replacement for cloud services on robot vacuums. This enables mapping, etc. but does not require a connection to the internet.
Interesting—out of curiosity, what is your primary complaint with the DCP-L2550DW? I have one too and use it seamlessly for printing and scanning on Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. My third party toner refills have worked great and the machine itself was rather inexpensive. Not invalidating your experience, as I may have just gotten lucky, but would be interested to know what issues it’s created for you.
Yes. I have a Mitsubishi mini split and my broadlink (RM3, but effectively the same from an IR standpoint) is able to transmit codes. I did have to train the broadlink unit, which basically consists of putting it into a “learn” mode and then pressing the desired button on the mini split remote.
First I heard of this bit - hilarious! Thanks for sharing.
This is so wholesome and I love it!!
Related question I’m hoping you know the answer to: can I use this as a recourse against debt collection calls or texts? I get numerous calls and texts for the prior owner of my cell phone number (to whom I have no relation to be clear) that have persisted for ~6 years despite repeatedly informing them I am not the individual they want to contact and asking to be removed from their records.
Paracetamol and acetaminophen are the same drug, so yes you are correct.
America and Japan refer to the drug as acetaminophen, while most of the rest of the world calls it paracetamol.
Oh interesting I misunderstood your comment. I thought “exact same career trajectory” meant the only difference was the degree. I’m not the user you replied to but I can see how
1) two people with exact same career trajectory but one has a CS degree results in the degree holder being preferred, and
2) two people, one of which has a CS degree with a less accomplished career and the other of which has been promoted/demonstrated greater accomplishments results in the non-degree holder being preferred.
Doesn’t TOR also publish works by Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Douglas Adams, Philip K. Dick, and others? I wouldn’t agree with characterizing those authors as “exclusively trashy sci-fi..” I am not sure if your comment means “of the sci fi they publish, it is all trashy” (implying they publish some non-sci fi that is not necessarily trashy) or “the only works they publish are sci fi and all of said sci fi is trashy”. Either way, I would bet most readers wouldn’t consider these authors to be trashy.
I think the original point that one can obtain enjoyable reads in DRM-free form from TOR still stands, even if not all books they publish are exemplary.

Out of curiosity, who are the two that you don’t consider the smartest people in the legal profession? I have my ideological qualms with a few justices but would likely consider all nine to be among the smartest people in the legal profession.
Title appears truncated - full title is “Cigarette butts are poisoning shoreline animals. This beach rover may help clean all that up”
Agreed TFA is misleading. Apple and Google refused to allow governments to track individuals through exposure notification apps and forced client-side, privacy-preserving notifications. I’d imagine HN would have supported the Apple/Google approach where everything’s local and anonymous rather than what many governments initially proposed where identity and/or location was logged by the apps. (I also agree that privacy-preserving exposure notifications are better than invasive tracking ones, especially in the US where the citizenry expects a right to privacy)
